  1. Dex- I haven't had any of the same experiences here. I use my 40ELK when recording and I don't have any problems with: 1. Noise (however, I don't usually change any displays when recording. I may try that as a test soon.) 2. Problems connecting the remote and the mics at the same time (I am using the output cable on the Reactive Sounds SPA-2). But I haven't had any problems with the SP omnis without the Boost Box and the 38EL connected. 3. There are recording meters on the 40ELK when recording (with both RH910 and RH10 I get meters when recording). Did you mean you want meters not just level indicators (which may be what I am calling meters)? Just my .02 and my experience.
  2. Call me crazy (and you wouldn't be the first) but LP4 isn't that bad at times for some music. I use my MZ-S1 at the gym and on morning walks. If the source was a studio CD, I can actually have decent enjoyment out of the 4 or 5 mixes I made in LP4. I agree that LP2 does sound much better and that is usually the bit rate I use. But, there are some Lp4 music copies that don't sound "horrible" or "appalling" to me and others who I have tested. It's not a perfect bit rate for music but it does a fair job for portable applications. Plus, the headphones that I use with the MZ-S1 (the OEM Sports pair) aren't likely to let me hear that many artifacts anyways! Of the 15 or so MDs I have recorded for use in the MZ-S1, 3 are LP4 and 12 are LP2. That should tell you something. But, don't knock it till you give it a shot for some of your music. It might be acceptable, depending how you are listening and what you are using to listen. The 3 LP4 I have kept are a Rush mix, a 80's Heavy Metal mix and something else I can't remember (maybe cause I don't listen to it ) All of the LP4 were recorded from CD via Simple Burner. Now, back to the family vacation in lovely Northeast Ohio
  3. Dex- There is a homemade shockmount discussion going at TaperSection, click Here
  4. That is very possible. My house is about 500 feet from the Southern Railroad line. There is a patch of woods and a 2 lane road between my street and the tracks. It's still an active line. Maybe I didn't notice. I will take another listen. But there was nothing, not even a ceiling fan moving in my house. You can however hear the clock in my living room above the fireplace...
  5. Then why can we upload wav files which are usually twice the size as FLAC? Size is probably not the reason.
  6. No, I turned off everything in my house before the test and put the cat in the yard. I even turned off the central A/C in my house. That is a sacrifice in South Carolina in the middle of June, let me tell you! Is it possible you were hearing the cello from the source CD? I can try with just some vocals or electronic source later. Thanks for the remix. I did find the Bob to be brighter in the higher freqs as well.
  7. Ok, my 2 TEST samples are now in the Gallery. TEST Gallery Samples These were both PCM with manual recording at 30/30 with the Boost at Max and the Mic Sens set to Low. I never record LIVE music with the Boost Box going 30/30 or Max gain so I don't know if this TEST really shows the benefit of the Boost Box. I usually set around 21/30 line input and use less than half of the gain on the Boost Box and I have never heard the amount of noise you get with Max Gain and 30/30 on the Boost Box. It sounds almost the same to me on both samples. What do you think? Oh well, more later.
  8. Price lowered to $22 which includes priority shipping in the USA. PM if interested.
  9. Your better off trying to restore that file you deleted from the PC. You aren't going to get anything off that MD. Thanks Sony.
  10. BTW, you don't have to delete the originals off the MD to divide or combine what is in your library on SS since version 3.0. Do yourself a favor and DON"T DELETE the tracks from the source MD when you are editing. You won't be able to upload by USB again but at least you will have a copy to real time record if necessary for a back-up.
  11. A440- I agree. Having just used the same SP mini omnis to make a great stealth show that was last year ruined by lack of bass and too much wind noise at the same show with cardiods, I am now a firm believer in the use of omnis for stealth recordings. However, 90% of my recordings are taper friendly environs and I set up my AT853s in mic holders (see below, got those from Sound Pros as well). The cards really cut out some of the bass which is a good thing in most cases and cut the chatter. I also use hypercard elements if the venue is really booming or I am farther away from the source. Cardioids have a great pickup and are my main taping pattern. But, when stealthing, I will forever go omni for the pickup pattern that allows me to move around and when I clip to the front of my shirt (one facing up, one facing down) it does cut a lot of the crowd chatter from behind that otherwise might get on the recording. Wind noise is very limited by omnis and for that alone at outdoor shows when stealth, there is no other element or pattern to use than omni. Check out this Mic Placement Link for the Oade Brothers info on mic placement. To be honest, I usually just go NOS or something close to 90 degrees straight ahead. Well, that something about why I like cardioids for my non-stealth and omnis for stealth. [attachmentid=384]
  12. I actually think they should have stuck with DH710 since it is only a downloading unit. No line input, no mic input. Just USB. But, if that's what you want...

  14. Looking for an easy way to get your MDLP recordings to CD? Take a look at this eBay auction This CD Recorder takes coaxial, optical and analog inputs. It works great for MD to CD recordings without using the computer. Of course, if you have a MD deck with optical output, you can connect with the optical input on this unit and make a digital transfer in real time. It's easier to use for that purpose than using optical inputs on the computer, especially if you don't have a fast processor, lots of free memory and a good optical input card. Take a look and let me know if you have any questions about the recorder. I am selling this because I haven't used it for MD to CD transfers since I went Hi-MD and it's just sitting around. Also has a 3 CD changer that works 100%.
  15. Just in case you didn't know...Sony Style is offering free shipping on purchases over $25 and no interest (until June 30th, 2005). They now have the complete 2nd Gen line-up, including the RH710. You have until midnight EST to get the free shipping deal. Good deal considering their prices are more expensive in general...
  16. Since there is now a vendor on Ebay selling these new for $25 plus $10 shipping, I am dropping my price to $25 which includes shipping in the USA. PM if interested.
  17. Dex- Try this trick for the OLED: Screen Saver As for the jog wheel, I also found it to be bassackwards when adjusting the recording levels too. I did figure out if you use the rew and ff "buttons" on the sides of the wheel, you get more intuitive results when adjusting the levels. I have had this RH10 since April and it is my main recording unit. To be honest, I have used the RH910 far more. That's really why I bought the RH910: for everyday use. Basically, the same units but I haven't really missed my NH900 since making the switch to 2nd Gen. I never recorded in ATRAC3 with the NH900 and I still use the RH910 with SS to make MDs for my MZ-S1. I am very satisfied with my 2nd Gen units. I can get my ATRAC3 fixes with the MZ-S1 anytime. Since SS finally got it's act together, life is good. Now, if we can only get SS to support playback from the unit for mp3 files... But, I can't say enough about the RH10's OLED. If you are looking for a great Hi-MD to record live music or record in dark settings, this is the unit. However, I do recommend something like the RM-MC40ELK so you can see recording levels (or anything) in bright daylight. Again, congratulations and welcome to the RH10 club
  18. I am selling my RM-MC38EL remote. This is the OEM remote that was shipped with my NH900 (sold). It's in very good condition with all buttons functioning (works with my RH10 and RH910). No problems known. Superficial scratch (less than 0.5mm) in one area. I have not tried to clean the scratch with using the toothpaste method (see thread). If you use it like a real remote, it will have a scratch or two... See basic description here. Should work with all Hi-MDs (including NH600D and RH710 models). On eBay, this remote is $40 plus $10 shipping for a new remote. Plus, you have to wait for it to ship from China. Since this is used but still completely functional, I say $35 total (for priority shipping in the USA) is a deal. If you want me to ship it overseas or out of the USA, we can discuss. If you use Paypal to pay, it will be a little more as well for the fees. I will take money order or Paypal. I will ship the day I receive the money order. Send me a PM if you are interested. I only have 1 to offer, first come/first serve. [attachmentid=355] [attachmentid=356] [attachmentid=357] [attachmentid=358]
  19. Then again, Hi-SP when you don't want to worry about changing MDs when you are stealth recording music IS the way to go...
  20. When I had the NH900 and 40ELK, I always had the light stay on when recording. I also always had the HOLD on the remote and the unit. I think this is an issue with 2nd Gen compatibility with the 40ELK. When I did my testing with the RH10 and the 40ELK, I couldn't figure out how to keep it on all the time, that's why I sold it with my NH900. But, if it will come on with a nudge of the volume or display, it might be worthwhile afterall...
  21. Well, my first stealth run with my SP mini omni mics and the RS attenuator trick worked great last night in stormy Myrtle Beach. I recorded Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson last night. I had the RH910 stowed away. I should have brought the RH10 along but the weather was rainy and I picked the easier of the 2 to replace. Plus, the security checks were enforced but I made it through intact. I placed the mics on the front of my shirt with one facing up and one facing down. That cut out a great deal of crowd noise and allowed for a great pickup pattern. I am very pleased with the sound. Only a few crowd "farts" were noticed. I had the omnis connected to the RS volume control attenuator going mic input on 20/30. The levels were great and only a hint of too much level when Bob and his band were cranking it but nothing near clipping. I did normalize Willie but the Bob was plenty loud. I might stick a snippet on the gallery for folks to enjoy. Thanks to A440 for the attenuator trick! Worked like a charm with my mini SP omni mics. I could have taken the Reactive Sounds SPA-2 in with me but the RS cable is a whole lot cheaper to replace if the weather gets nasty or the security gets stupid... Now, if I only had my 40ELK remote again, my stealth setup would be perfect. Looks like I gotta save my pennies again...
  22. With the RH910, can you get the backlight to stay lit or will it illuminate with a bump of the volume if it's on HOLD? I recorded Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson last night and the 38EL didn't illuminate when on HOLD if I hit any buttons like the 40ELK would do with my old NH900. I had the RH910 stowed away. I should have brought the RH10 along but the weather was rainy and I picked the easier of the 2 to replace. Plus, the security checks were enforced but I made it through intact. I am thinking I should have kept my 40ELK when I sold my NH900. I think it would be a great addition for my RH10 and my RH910 but I can't remember how my test went with the backlight on the RH10 other than I couldn't set it to stay lit all the time like I could with the NH900. I find myself on ebay often looking at those 40ELK. Even with the RH10 I think it would be a good thing cause you can have the RH10 stowed away when stealthing and just check the remote. If Qwakrz could respond about the illumination functionality on the RH10 or if anyone with a RH910 could speack about this functionality, I would appreciate it! Thanks! BTW, the Willie and Bob turned out great.
  23. Definitely sounds defective to me. Get it replaced ASAP.
