Zappa- I had a similar experience with my first NH900 uploading that almost made me get rid of everything MD. I had an error on the upload and a blue screen of death. When I tried to re-upload, you know SS deleted everything and I almost cried. Well, I learned to divide large PCM tracks into a few smaller one for uploading and I haven't had 1 problem since that first bad experience. But, I tell you that 1 experience with uploading had me longing for my old MD deck and optical cables. I don't think splitting tracks causes the problem with SS and TOC, it's combining the tracks that almost always leads to the omnijibox.exe error. It's like the DRM can't handle the updated TOC for combined tracks. But, since SS 3.2 now allows multiple uploads, I won't even bother with dividing tracks since I can just try again if I need the 2nd attempt! Glad to have you back in the flock!

Emergency Spare Battery for MZ-NH900
mrsoul replied to soundalike's topic in Technical, Tips, and Tricks
At a 3 day festival, I would stick with Hi-SP. Since you are going to probably be outdoors and this won't be the most pleasing recording scenarios, just go Hi-SP. It's really a decent recording codec on the 1st and 2nd Gen Hi-MDs. I have recorded several "important" sets with it and it's been fine. PCM is my main mode but Hi-SP is the ONLY way at a 3 Day festival. Plus, the uploads when you get home will be much, much, much faster. Just my .02. -
Currently here at work on the RH910: Emmylou Harris's Wrecking Ball (1995) and a mix of Lucinda Williams and Emmylou on the rest of the MD. At home on the MZ-S1: I have been on a Phil Lesh and friends kick lately. I have 2 shows on 2 different MDs in LP2 that I got from http://www.archive.org from the 2001 shows: 4-19 and 8-4. Gotta love that Jimmy Herring and Warren Haynes combo. One of the best "jam bands" with tons of energy that the post mid 80's Dead lacked...I guess the 10 year anniversary of Jerry Garcia's passing had something to do with that since I again watched the Grateful Dead Movie on DVD in 5.1 on Monday with a smile on my face I saw the Dead 39 times in the 80's and 90's. Still miss old Jerry, especially in the summer. Also, yesterday was the 3rd anniversary of Mike Houser's passing (Widespread Panic), saw them about 50 times in the same period (my "hippie" years as my family calls them). A solemn week for me and other fans. But, I have tons of shows that still give me chills and put that smile on my face. Well, sorry to drift off subject but that's what's been on my mind and in my MDs this week...

Blue 7 has always been my fave Sonny tune. I think Miles and co. had that tune in mind when Kind of Blue was cut a few years later. It's got that groove. M

That makes good sense to me... go for the RH910 and the 40ELK remote. You will have something you can read in the daylight and in the dark. It was what I was going to do initialy and then I saw that RH10 display... and I forgot my good sense I have bought 3 MD items from Etronics. Very good prices and very good customer service.

Very cool. Thanks for the pictures. How about a review when you get a chance?

Almost any Sony remote will work with these two units. The RM-MC40ELK is the preferred but the 35EL will do the job. You can check on ebay or even minidisco for remotes but be aware they are overpriced on most etailer sites. You can get decent ones on ebay for less than $25-$30. Here is a thread regarding most of the Sony remotes: Remotes Good luck.

I have both the RH10 and the RH910 and I have the 40ELK remote. I use the RH910 with the 40ELK in the daytime and the RH10 during club or night time shows. It's also nice to have a tandem backup for sets longer than 90 minutes. You can keep the RH10 display lit at all times, there is an option under Display if I am not mistaken, it does dim slightly after a preset time of no activity but it does remain illuminated so you can see levels in the dark. I don't stealth that much but my preferred stealth setup is the RH910 and the 40ELK. If I am open taping, the RH10 is the primary unit. I really get a kick out of watching that display while recording. If going for just one of these, I would go RH10 cause you at least get a basic remote and the OLED screen is more than enough info for taping, open or stealth.

I second that advice from The Low Volta. DO NOT combine tracks on the unit and then attempt an upload, you will encounter the TOC error and maybe lose some data. I have found the combine feature on the SS 3.x to be easy to use and hassle free for most files. If you are just combining a few seconds here and there, it's really quick. If you are combining larger and longer files, it does take some processor resources but nothing painful. Just to state again, DO NOT COMBINE ON THE UNIT, let SS do it for you AFTER you upload. Good luck with your selection. The RH910 and the RH10 are great machines and the high speed upload is great. I once had the Sharp DR7 and went optical out to optical in. I don't miss those days. Plus, the Hi-MD 1Gb of memory for PCM recordings can't even be compared to the SP recordings of ATRAC3.

I was floored by that movie and soundtrack. My wife and I caught a tour of some of them, including Ibrahim in Seattle at the Paramount back in 99 or 2000. It was a musical highlight for us. Sorry to hear the news but glad I was awaken to his beauty and talent. May he rest in peace. M

Great news! I will send my RH10 on this free offer asap. Thanks for the info! Not a big issue since I don't title on the unit that often but still for the $300 price tag, I want it to be as good as possible. Now, if they will only address that combine and upload TOC issue... Thanks Chris!

Call me crazy but that looks like it might be a decent unit for the night stand since it has the alarm clock function. Really don't need a cassette player but I might take a look at the black one. I guess it will be on Audiocubes or fleabay soon enough. Still wish it had Hi-MD playback...

If you are doing this on the HI-MD in the transfer screen, you can drag all the tracks into 1 folder and be done with the old empty folder (erase it). Is that what you are asking? Or are you asking about My Library Group folders?

RH10 review/comments + RH10 vs. NH900 pictorial!
mrsoul replied to IdiotSavant's topic in Product Reviews/Pictorials
Great review, thanks for taking the time. I have enjoyed my RH10 and the RH910. The RH910 actually serves as my music player at work in my office. I have a 2.1 Polk Audio set with woofer and playing back via USB at work in Hi-LP sounds great and I really like not having to worry about charging the battery if I want to throw it in the car on the way home. It's really the only time I enjoy Hi-Lp. I think playing back via SS actually sounds better than over the speakers. I know there's no logical explanation for that but it's what I perceive. Really, it's why I bought the RH910: to be a backup in tandem when recording live with my RH10 and to have a portable music player I can use at work and on the road without having to worry about the RH10 getting a little banged around. Anyways, the no interest for 12 months from Sony Style was too good to pass up So, long story short, there are people like me who enjoy having a Hi-MD that is primarily a music player. It keep me from having to use the office computer for saving massive amounts of entertainment files. Again, thanks for the review and enjoy your RH10. -
I too was able to replicate this issue/bug with my RH10 today using the auto tracks, combine, TOC save method. I got the omnjibox.exe error too and then SS couldn't find the Hi-MD until I deleted the tracks manually. Well, lesson learned for me. I rarely combine tracks on the Hi-MD, just divide long tracks I recorded live before I upload. I have found the divide/combine in SS to be fairly useful (if not slow) and consistent. I will remember not the combine any live recordings until I get them in My Library. Thanks for pointing out the bug as I don't plan to return my RH10 or RH910 any time soon. But, I am really enjoying SS 3.2 overall. Baby steps, baby steps...

Took a complete reinstall to get the upload to work. Was about time to clean out the Hi-MD junk library. I tried the backup tool but I got an error on the restore and it wouldn't repeat. I can still get my Connect files no problem. Oh well, I gain a few Gig of extra space and had all the live shows archived in FLAC on DVD or other Hard Drive. It was a weird error: it would start the transfer process and then go straight to 100%. I was hoping for faster uploads but that was ridiculous Well, it's working now and I have a clean library. Still like where we are going even if it is baby steps, baby steps, baby steps...

Something is wrong with my uploads. I can upload using 3.1 on my laptop but when I try on 3.2 on the desktop, no dice. I can download to the Hi-MD and I can even transfer that track back (the DRM rights) to My Library but it won't take the uploads. Anybody have any suggestions? If I do a reinstall do you think it will make any difference?

But, you can still play that *.oma file on the other computer with Winamp or Windows Media. I get an error when I try to do that with CD imported files from 3.1, not on 3.2. Haven't tried the upload yet because I can't get SS 3.2 to accept my uploads. It reads and plays the line in tracks but it does not upload. Gonna try on my laptop with 3.1. Something is smelling fishy about 3.2...
-
It is working for me at home. I plan to try 3.2 here at work sometime today. But, I did spend some time in the Help file last night looking at ATRAC CD info and that was 3.2. Just my .02.

No problem, I just felt obligated to explain further and SHARE my happiness about the lack of DRM on files I created or captured from LIVE sources. I agree that I found the ability to remove DRM from files imported off a CD to be weird and "loose" considering what we have been forced to deal with in the past versions. DRM on personal recordings = BAD BUSINESS Choice by Sony, DRM on store CDs = Something I have no problem with and something I support (to a point of course). Hope that helps explain my position. Thanks again for the reply and the discussion. Now back to happy times... M

Wait a minute. I was referring to my computer at work, my laptop and my desktop at home and without having to have SS on every computer. The ability to use Winamp or WM to play these files on whatever computer I want is a big deal to me. BTW, I personally own over 600 "legal" CDs. I don't think you were slamming me about caring about music but you almost went there. I do work for a living supporting a family and I also value the work musicians put into their work but I also want to enjoy that music that I paid for whereever and whenever I see fit. Thank you. I feel an edit of that first post would be a bit silly since most of us here do act like thinking adults and can appropriately handle the freedom that we already paid for. Plus, if I recorded something LIVE with one of my Hi-MDs, why wouldn't I feel okay about sharing my own recording with someone else? Without DRM, I wouldn't have to worry about converting just to let me friends at work have a playing copy. I use Hi-MD for Live Recording and not having DRM on my work is what I am most excited about and I do plan on SHARING that when I have the opportunity!

I just did a simple test with a file that I created on my desktop WITHOUT DRM (Miles Davis "Blue in Green") and then I copied the *oma file to my laptop via my network connection. It played in Windows Media player without even a hiccup of DRM. It wouldn't import to SS 3.1 on my laptop but I will try again once I get SS 3.2 on the laptop. I will also take a few files to work tomorrow and try there. This has a lot of promise for archiving and sharing of music files. Again, a move in the right direction for Sony!

Don't fear NetMD users cause you still have the options of converting the file to LP2 or LP4 when transferring to NetMD. No loss of NetMD functionality that I can see. Just import in WAV and then convert to LP2/LP4 or just use Simpleburner...

Unfortunately, when you try to burn an ATRAC CD you can't use the new bitrates. You are forced to use the old bit rates. I thought I had a bunch of new options for my PSYC ZS-SN10 boombox. Kinda confused as to why that couldn't read those new bitrates. It can read a range of mp3 bitrates. Or am I missing something? Still, I like the option to remove DRM and the unlimited uploads makes me feels a WHOLE lot better about Sony today

I'll agree that MXD-D400 was a great MD/CD deck. Even the mp3 playback was awesome for mp3 CDs. You could easily scroll through folders and via text. If I had the money I would have kept it but I sold it on Ebay to start my path down the Hi-MD road... Really, I was actually looking on Ebay last week to see if anyone was crazy enough to sell their MXD-D400. It really was a great deck. The CD to MD dub was fantastic and it was Type R although I almost always used the High Speed for LP2 and the real time for SP. Just call me crazy...
