  1. The only way I would have my RH10 fixed by Sony is prepaid shipping. It's their fault, not mine. I never use titles unless it's from SS. My fingers are too big and I don't have a need for titles on the RH10 since it is mainly a recording unit only. It's not an issue to me but I can understand why some would want it fixed.
  2. Sounds like you have the Quick Mode on. That keeps the unit in a semi-ready state so it doesn't take as long to get started. Access the Options Menu and set the Quick Mode to Off. That should fix your problem. I haven't had any problems like that with my RH10. But I did forget to change it on my old NH900 and it did drain the battery even though it was "OFF".
  3. I just posted some Derek Trucks and Jupiter Coyote samples in mp3 format in the gallery. These were all recorded using the Sound Professional SP-CMC-4 mics which are really Audio Technica 853 mics. The mics were powered by the Reactive Sounds Boost Box and recorded with the NH900 (2005-04-01), the RH10 (2005-04-09) and the RH910 (2005-05-26). Enjoy!
  4. I might just get around to that this week. Someone posted on the Bit Torrent tracker site this quote about the recording: "one of the best stealth mic>MD recordings I have heard". That's a big compliment and the RH910 worked great in the bright (and hot) sunshine. I also want to post some of the other stuff I have been recording lately. Thanks for the reminder. I am heading to Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson this week, I hope to finally try my stealth setup...
  5. Let's get this one rolling... great time with little kids running around the stage. Turned out really good. Enjoy! http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=14620 Jupiter Coyote Swan Lake Gardens Iris Festival-Taste of Sumter Sumter, SC May 26th, 2005 Recorded: SP-CMC-4 (AT 853 cards @ 8.5 feet, center:30 feet)>Reactive Sounds SPA-2>Sony RH910 HiMD (PCM 44.1/16) Transfer: Sony Sonic Stage (USB transfer)>CD WAV>FLAC Frontend 1st Set: d1t01: Intro (Ben Tanner, WIS TV) d1t02: By and By d1t03: Jot>Everytime d1t04: Chances d1t05: A Little Like Me d1t06: Drew's Theme d1t07: Narrow Line d1t08: Confusionville d1t09: Tumbleweed>Parkway Blue Blinder d1t10: Words d1t11: Becky d1t12: Man in Your Band 2nd Set: d2t01: Flight of the Lorax d2t02: Snake Handler d2t03: Rose Hill d2t04: Inquire with Delight> Lucky Day> Cindi d2t05: Ballad of Lucy Edenfield d2t06: Real Thing d2t07: Crazywomen>Hopkins County Stew d2t08: Ship in the Bottle d2t09: E: Black Water
  6. You can use either. Mic in with a battery powered mic is something I have done myself but there is an increased risk for "brickwalling" with loud source signals. "Brickwalling" refers to distortion regardless of where you set the levels, the SPL (sound pressure levels) is just too high for the mic preamp to deal with. The mic in with the battery powered mic will work just fine for some recordings but I would go Line In to avoid possible distortion. The mic in route with the powered mic can allow a better dynamic range for the mic BUT it does add more "noise" to the recording. It really depends on what you are recording. If I were recording a loud concert with a powered mic, I would most definitely go Line In. If it were something with less SPL (like bluegrass) I would consider mic in for better levels, etc. Something you have to decide for yourself based on what you are recording. Maybe Dex or A440 can add to this...
  7. Doesn't the NT4 also run off its own battery? You can use that model with or without battery if I remember correctly. Try it first with the battery and see what kind of levels you get and then consider a preamp if needed. Make sure you go Line In, not Mic In.
  8. Check out Sound Professionals, they have some really small battery boxes with bass rolloff available. Their Audio Technica mics are great. Also, look at Reactive Sounds Auris mics. You could get the Auris mics and a small battery box for under $200. Now, you really need to consider a Hi-MD to make it complete for live recording needs...but that puts the budget out of whack. Not knocking the Sharp MDs, great recorders. I miss my old Sharp DR7's ease of operation for Live needs. BTW, I started my recording hobby with a set of cardioids from Giant Squid, great price and decent starter mics but once that upgrade bug hits you, you're looking beyond them... Have fun and keep us posted on your new purchases.
  9. That needs a clarification... If you use Marcnet's HiMDRenderer program, then no worries about optical source or digital source. You can convert to WAV and edit forever...
  10. I recorded the Victor Wooten Soul Circus (bass player with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones in case you are wondering...) on Friday using the RH10 and the RH910 in tandem (I switched to the RH910 for two songs so I could change disc on the RH10). I used hypercardioid elements and it turned out fairly decent. The room mix was poor and there is a lot of space and metal in the room. I was centered on the balcony. I did run a bass filter in Cool Edit Pro and that helped a good deal for the mix. Here's a link for the Bit Torrent. There are about 5 or 6 seeds still running, so the d/l should be fast. http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=14487 Enjoy!
  11. Try Radio Shack if you are in the USA
  12. I think what would test this fully would be one long PCM track of 92 minutes uploaded with the "save in WAV format" option to check whether or not SS will "cut" this track at certain point (I think it was 70 minutes or 650Mb,etc). See this post for explanation: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=6598
  13. Raintheory- That's a great question. I haven't uploaded anything large for WAV yet with SS 3.1. I totally forgot about the WAV converter cutting the tracks. I make a habit of dividing the tracks on the recorder BEFORE I upload. That way, you only risk losing that 1 track if there is an error. Anybody want to test this issue?
  14. I agree, you do get all 3 lines of info. My biggest problem was the backlight staying lit (I rarely stealth and I want to see those recording levels at all times, not just when I need to take a peak) and I couldn't access all the menus. I would have kept my 40ELK but I thought I would get more on Ebay if I sold my Nh900 with the 40ELK. Considering I only got $212 for the combo, I should have kept the 40ELK...you live and learn. It would have been a nice addition to my new RH910. I would consider it a must for the RH910 even if you can't get the light to stay lit at all times...
  15. Don't over look Turtle Beach if you are looking for a great soundcard with Optical in and output. Here's a link to Tiger Direct's page Turtle Beach Here's the official Turtle Beach webpage
  16. Yes, this was actually changed in SS 3.0. Prior to SS 3.0, you actually had to delete the track from the HIMD it came from to edit the track. That's no longer a problem since SS 3.0. That has been a big improvement for me.
  17. That's the North America version. Only those sold in Japan have the LCD remote and the charging station. You don't need the charging station, the recorder has a charging port for AC connections. The LCD remote, you can pick up one that works with this unit on Ebay. Welcome to the Forum. This isn't a topic for Live Recording, probably Find Your Minidisc or even HiMD would be more appropriate but I don't have the rights to move this topic. If one of the mods can help...
  18. Plus, you can't get the backlight to stay lit, like you can with the NH900 and 40ELK combo. You have to move a dial or the volume control to get the light back on for a few seconds, etc. Menus are very limited when using the RH10 and 40ELK combo, I speak from experience.
  19. The digital output is disabled for DVD Audio playback only. You can use it for anything else other than DVD Audio playback. In other words, you will have digital output if you play a copyrighted CD or DRM'd mp3/wma file. Just a simple clarification.
  20. Easy on the Creative SB Audigy2 ZS. I have that card and the front I/O board. It's a great MD tool. I ain't afraid to fluff it either! Before Hi-MD, it was the easiest way to get shows from my Sharp DR7 to my MD deck to my computer with that front I/O board. I think the problem is the mixer. Even if you aren't getting data through the optical path, the optic light will still make the NH900 think it has a digital connection going. Make sure you have the WAV slider is at least to the middle on the mixer. There are 2 different digital output selections in the menus (1 is in the THX console menu and the other is on the speaker settings menu>access both of these by right-clicking on the Creative volume control icon in the Sys tray). Try checking both of those. Put on some headphones (from the MD) and see if there is any audio coming through the optical connection. You might want to double check your Windows volume control mixer in addition to the Creative one to make sure nothing is disabled or muted that you are playing as an output. Hope that helps. Keep us posted.
  21. In order to protect my OLED screen on my RH10, I am using a very cheap trick that does not lower the screen visibility and keeps the scratch risk very low. I had a roll of that static cling tint for automobile windshields (the thin strip that runs across the top). I cut a square a little bigger than the OLED and placed it on the RH10. Sticks very tightly and no residue to ever worry about for this trick. I can always cut another piece if this one suffers. The only down side is the visibility in direct sunlight has not improved with this trick. You will need to shade it to see in direct sun. But then again, I can hardly see the OLED in direct sunlight anyways. That's where my RH910 comes in real handy! The old fashion LCD wins every time in the sun! Just thought I would share my trick if anyone out there is worried about their OLED!
  22. For PCM uploading, it is slow, just a little faster than 1:1. But for HiSP recordings, the upload doesn't take much time at all, a rough estimate of 6 or 7:1.
  23. I admit that I had VERY poor performance with my NH-10WM battery that shipped with my NH900 but I can get over 12 hours of Hi-SP playback at 60-80% volume with just the NH-10WM on my RH910. If you charge it and let it drain completely at least twice, it will condition the battery. I am even doing that with my NH-14WM that shipped with my RH10. I think the NH-10WM is the low alternative but I was VERY suprised at the results I got with my RH910. It will save me from taking that AA attachment everywhere I go. Give it a try and see. I usually just put it on repeat and shuffle and 80% volume and then go to bed. It will run all night and then when I get home in the afternoon, I charge it. Do that at least twice and see what kind of playback time you get.
  24. I would first try to update to SS 3.1.
  25. The Gorge does have an incline and that concrete down front. If I did roll the bass it would be at the lowest level. But, like A440 suggested, I would try it without. Are you using cardioids or omni mics? Cardioids at the Gorge are likely to pick up way too much wind noise unless you put it in a dead rat windsock. I miss the Gorge. Saw lots of great shows there in the mid to late 90's. Neil Young, Phish, Traffic...
