Here is an MSN log from a conversation between me and Dex.

My previous post definately proves that it is possible to alter files' DRM properties by editing the database files. More images: http://www.nic.fi/~lhahne/temp/ss/

I posted the following also at T-Board. I got some good results by hacking the database files. Here is what I did: I opened database called MtType and then its table t_propertySpec which appears to contain some explanations . It contains the following line. 1160 mbjContent_copyRemain So I thought that ID 1160 must have something to do with copies. Next, I opened database MtData which appears to an exact duplicate of files MtData1 - MtData5. It contains table called t_property which contains some properties. I added a line which has 1160 as PropertySpecID, 63 as ObjectId (see t_object table to get an ObjectID for a file), 1 as IntegerValue and 1 as PropertyTypeID (see t_type). Then I added this same line to all MtData files (this is essential). And the result? Look at it! If somebody posted me a copy of a MtData file, which contains entries for files which have copying restrictions, I would be more than happy to take a look at the file.

You need to play your file directly from Minidisc using Sonic Stage 2 to get a digital playback over usb.

Just to remind everybody, the European version of mz-nh600, which has line-in, doesn't have any support for remote controller.

I suggest you to read the list of recommended Lame settings and versions. It also features a guide about setting up EAC to rip using those settings. The settings provided there are also suggested by Lame developers.

The quality of ATRAC(3(plus)) depends heavily on bitrate. 256 kbps ATRAC3plus (44.1 kHz, 16 bit) does definately beat 22.5 kHz, 8 bit PCM on speech (and music) content. On the other hand, ATRAC3plus at 64 kbps is ok for speech and offers 34 hours of recording time on one Hi-MD disc.

Don't you have a DVD player?

Spectrum analyzation of WAV, 256kbps ATRAC3+, 132kbps ATRAC3

Unfortunately images don't tell us what it sounds like. -
I did a simple double blind listening test. Atrac3plus faired pretty well. Look at http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index....showtopic=24735 . @dex, read the following: http://skepdic.com/blondlot.html

@dex&jadeclaw, did you abx'ed the samples or is this something like "but it feels much better" placebo effect. Some information on abx: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index....showtopic=16295

For f*ucks sake, joint stereo m/s (used @ 128 by all encoders) is lossless!!! Look at: http://harmsy.freeuk.com/mostync/ http://www.audiocoding.com/wiki/index.php?...M%2FS+Matrixing

You can convert your files to wav on your computer using Total Recorder. It should even work if you play digitally recorded music on your minidisc when it is connected to usb port.
-
I had no problems when I upgraded to SS 2.1. I just downloaded and installed it from connect.com like Sony wants us to do (no fancy tricks used). It should work as is if your machine isn't borked.

Have a Hi-MD question that doesn't need a thread? [part II]
Latexxx replied to Christopher's topic in Minidisc
The easiest way is to upload them to a pc using Sonic Stage and then using Total Recorder to record them. Total Recorder does the recording digitally so you should get bit-by-bit identical copy of your files on MD. -
This is little off-topic but matches the thread. Atrac3plus @ 256 is clearly distinguishable from original and I even have proof. Check this.
-
Assuming that you have an Atrac3(plus) encoder for Mac/Linux. On the other hand, nothing stops Sony from creating a Linux/Mac version of Sonic Stage with DRM.
-
Yeah. You'll get a full version of Sonic Stage 2.1 from Connect.com.

Writing MO discs is slow.

Amazon.de has it. They ship internationally.

Just one question. Do the Hi-MD devices appear as generic USB storage devices when they are connected to a PC? I.e. do Hi-MD devices need special drivers to work as mass storage devices?
