You know what they could to thats theoretically possible? (although maybe not with current set ups) If they could make a disc that was flippable (i.e. reversable like a tape deck Side A/Side and if it had a strong enough magnetic resistant shielding between the 2 'data layers' (sides) it could heat the back of the disc with the laser and then apply the data magnetically (effectively the reverse of todays method). Obviously how very complex this would be makes this a pipe dream but it'd still be interesting to see it in action (if its even possible)

glad to see they're finally just about everwhere although I'm sure that wait must have been killer

ya its a serteomini and yes for some reason, in a fit of lunacy, i thought the line in was digital only. Anywho works great now, except when Mr. Volume control makes it all sound the same. Meh guess ill be trying manual next. BTW if I'm going from something like my CD player to my MD what recording level do you find good? Should I put the CD player on full/half volume? Should I use Loud Music recording option, etc?

Hey I have a question. I'd like to record my LPs by running the turntable through my AMP and then to my MD. I currently have the Left/Right (white/red) wires going out into a stereomini plug which is then plugged into my mic jack. Is a steromini cable the same as a mic input cable or not?

if you did not record those tracks from the same computer you cannot transfer to rights to the song back to it. for example if the song came from your friends computer you're out of luck. Also if you down any reformatting or messing around big time with your computer it will not be recognized as the same PC and thus u cannot transfer yet again.

Ok To Play The Nh1 While Its In The Charger (and Charging) ?
ROMBUSTERS replied to BenJammin's topic in Minidisc
actually its probably better to listen to it until it dies and then charge it but thats just my guess -
not sure seeing as the 600 ONLY has the USB transfer anyways. hmm..
-
not too mention that the 700 just 'feels' a hell of a lot better IMO then the 600

sony makes a memory stick/card reader to HiMD USB tansfer device that stores all the files on the physical memory to HiMD removable discs. http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP....isc_HiMDWalkman

i dont believe that SS supports Atrac SP however you *are* still able to record in it via a HiMD recorder. You have to insert a normal 60/74/80 min MD formated in MD Mode and then you have the option to record in Type S SP via line in or mic

rather UMDs were born of HiMD roots i read somewhere (cant find source now) that the UMDs use the same switching layer technology as well as many other similar attributes. wait till i find the source because id rather not misquote anything. anywho back on topic: 2GB discs... continue
-
ya 1GB discs are everywhere where I live (Ontario Canada) and usually come at about $11 CND
-
which version of sonic stage are you using though? Wasn't 2.3 supposed to be an improvement from previous versions in terms of Atrac3+ encoding?
-
The PSP UMD is based off of Sony's HiMD technology true. However they are write only and Sony has (currently) no intentions on releasing blanks (to help with piracy issues for the PSP). To play back music on the PSP you must first transfer your files to memory stick (which is expensive per MB) and then put it into the memory slot of the PSP. Unfortunately SonicStage doesn't support the PSP or Memory Stick Currently (for obvious file trading issues) so the Atrac support for the PSP is currently nonexistant.

assuming your transfering from SonicStage -PCM is the highest quality sound because it is uncompressed and therefore suffers no artifacts or bad sounds attributed from the other codecs. -Atrac3+ 256 is the best compressed sound with a compression ratio of about 1/5 -Atrac3 132 (also known as LP2) is the middle ground and sound very good but is limited in improvements now because it is so old (made for MDLP models) -Atrac3 105 (shows up as LP2 but is more of an LP3) is a step down from 132 and is only slightly different -Atrac3+ 64 is the best low-bitrate compression and sounds quite decent for the lack of bandwith associated with the 64kbps mode -Atrac3 66 (also known as LP4) was made to compress music even further than 132 and frankly sounds like garbage, a no-contest when compraed to atrac3+ @ 64 even though LP4 has more bandwidth) -Atrac3+ 48 is the worst setting and should be avoided at all costs for anything other then general speaking or audiobooks as it makes music sound like... something that isnt music at all. I personally would recomend going with Atrac3+ 256/64 or Atrac3 132/105 depending on your need for quality vs space

actually theoretically speaking the limiting factor for writing to HiMDs right now is the time it takes for the laser to heat the disc to its curie point (before applying the magnetic data). Therefore if the desnity of the disc increased (and the data would then be placed closer together to fit within the same MD shape) the laser would in fact be heating up a lot more places to write data to then it currently does. In this way HiMD discs can only increase in write speed with increased density (using those theories of course). Obviously i wouldnt be expecting anything huge in an increase, or anything really noticable at all.

now another question is did Sony hold disc with greater capacity because: 1) they were too difficult to make 2) they don't exist 3) too expensive (at the time) 4) they want to sell more 1GB discs 5) they now want to stay competetive with HDD players which offer GBs of memory has anyone found any other literature regarding this matter?
-
No they havn't been announced (yet) so don't get excited. However there is a lot of rumors going on about their introduction this coming year. As some of us know the HiMD article calls for discs of at least up to 2GB (being compatible with current decks). Does anyone know anymore info about these rumors or anything regarding the future of HiMD discs? If 1GB = 60Min original MDs then we're looking at least a few tricks sony can pull to increase the storage and still keep it working on all machines.
-
yes, because it complies with USB's Mass Storage Class as long as your MAC supports USB drives then all should be fine. Although I remember hearing some slight weird problems a while ago, you might want to ask someone that actually uses a MAC about more details.

does anyone know of a way to make Windows Media Player 9 play back XviD movies without having access to install the codec into windows? (i.e. at work or school on a 'secure' network)
-
The MD (not CD) copy speed which is quoted at 100x is in reference to the speed at which the HiMD recorders (the 700 included) can transfer data to the disc (somewhere around 400-800kb/s) The reason you are not coming close is because you are encoding the files into atrac3+ on the fly which means you have to wait for it to encode the file *before* it even starts the 100x transfer. To fix this problem rip your music into SonicStage and convert them in there. Then transfer the converted files to the MD. This will go at the higher speed. By the way, 100x only refers to transfering a 48kbps song not anything else, so in actuality it will be slightly slower.

fool around with the EQ a bit. when you first get it, its set to 'normal' which equals ass, so pick a different one or make your own custom one
