  1. well actually exactly what kurisu said... it would be a choice between the NH900 and the RH10, but as I haven't even seen a real life RH10...ever (well Belgium is really far behind what HiMD is concerned ) I have to say NH900: the one I own and love
  2. the software transfer method always worked, it's just that the 2nd gen models can't record in the legacy formats anymore the biggest consequence of this is that 2nd gen HiMD have no option whatsoever to produce real SP anymore as the software won't allow this (only the disguised LP2 fake SP)
  3. HiMDRenderer uses the D(igital)R(ights)M(anagement or something) info from SS, so if a file/song won't work in SS (not recognized as stemming from that PC) HiMDRenderer won't be able to convert it... at least that's what I understand from the program, but I'm no computer wiz, so better to ask marcnet (the writer of HiMDRenderer and also a member of MDCF) himself (through a Personal Message or something...but I really doubt it will work) HiMDRenderer was intended for converting imported recordings to wav before Sony allowed this with the 'wav conversion tool' and later through SS itself... it was very useful and still is as uploaded digital recordings won't be converted by Sony stuff but will be using HiMDRenderer there is some hope for recovering homeless (unplayable) .oma's, as a lot of ppl are working on it, but as for now the knowledge (it is out there, that I know for sure... but I do not have access to it I'm afraid) isn't public so... just keep 'em safe somewhere till someone shares the info or someone breaks through the code
  4. I just let my NH900 run with full volume and low efficiency phones and backlight permanently on overnight till it has completely drained the battery... but perhaps that is too simple a solution?
  5. I've got a three day festival starting tomorrow on which I will try my concert taping experiences for the first time... although I expect a bunch of failures and ruined recordings due to my clumsiness, I will surely post some snippets and an elaborate (if I have the time) description of my 'adventures in stealth-recording-world'
  6. that explains a bunch... btw, I just received my Rm-MC40ELK from buyfromjapan I'm one happy taper now
  7. hm, but if you look at the pic he linked (from minidisc.org ) it clearly says 41EL
  8. as RM-MC40ELK these can be found on ebay for $75 (+ shipping) from "buyfromjapan" (see this ebay auction)... and sometimes (but not very often) a bit cheaper from other, less trustworthy sellers... almost eveything from that remote will work, except to enter the rec menu and perhaps some other thing (but nothing as useful as the rec menu), and with the RH10 you can not set the backlight to stay on all the time I believe (while with the NH900 you can do this) so if you want to invest a bit... this is the top-remote, if not, search for an RM-MC38ELK, which is the stick type that came with the NH900 and still is a very useful remote
  9. if you edit the entire CD as one wav with audacity and use a CD authoring tool like Nero or even EAC (exact audio copy) you can set trackmarks right befor burning... you could use Audacity and export each part that would be a track...but as you cannot really aim precisely inbetween segments to 'cut' this won't give gapless playback... so I would save the entire wav and just use one of the CD authoring tools that allow to add/remove trackmarks
  10. when using mic in instead of line in the enormous amounts of trackmarks shouldn't happen if you set autotrackmark to say 10 min... mic in should be very good for interviews btw when using line in there is nothing you can do but use this way of uploading for good results
  11. I already went through about eight rounds feeding new groups... well let Gnod know some good music
  12. HiLP = Atrac3+ @ 64kbps... I would personally only use HiSP for music I appreciate... but the only ears you should trust are your own! If HiLP works for you, why wouldn't you use it... it doesn't work for me though
  13. I love to learn from my friends when it comes to getting to know new music... but for the moment I'm (temporarily) living at the other side of the country from most of my friends so I had to look elsewhere for inspiration and tips... playing around on the net, I stumbled upon this funny gadget: music map (the tourist map of music) you enter the name of a band you like and press search and it shows a number of other bands that ppl who listen to your selection also like... they are even spread out in the two dimensional space of your screen according to the number of ppl who connected those bands here's a sample with 'The Mars Volta' (one of my fav bands) as a query: [attachmentid=704] every band name can be clicked again so you get a new map centered on that one... so you can travel through ppl's tastes it's a shame that there's no description/sample of any of the bands or links to dedicated sites... but we all can use a search engine and tabbed browsing can't we? so that's actually a minor inconvenience The mapping is based on the info from the GNOD database: and if you travel to this site you can add your tastes and likings to the database... I had some fun with this and got interested in a couple of bands... so I just thought I'd share it with the rest of you... but if anyone out there has better/funnier/more complete options/ideas/gadgets for getting inspired, please share as well
  14. hm... I must definitely be growing old for me the musical experience still begins with buying a CD, although even I shared with close friends so we mostly only had one copy of the CD in our collective library... but I would recommend HiSP if you really want good quality music... the difference really is noticable with decent 'phones...which is the second recommendation... dump the stock'buds/'phones somewhere and get something that respects the music...even when listening with a portable device... just have a look at this thread for 'cheap' alternatives and I personally can recommend the Panasonic RP-JE50 in ear 'phones (for a shortish review see this thread) which can be bought cheaply from ebay
  15. just put two of my alltime favourite CD's on 80min MD in HiSP: The God Machine (the first band of Robin Proper Sheppard, the frontman of Sophia): Scenes From The Second Storey 1 Dream Machine 2 She Said 3 The Blind Man 4 I've Seen The Man 5 The Desert Song 6 Home 7 It's All Over 8 Temptation 9 Out 10 Ego 11 Seven 12 Purity 13 The Piano Song The God Machine One Last Laugh In A Place Of Dying 1 the tremelo song 2 mama 3 alone 4 in bad dreams 5 painless 6 the love song 7 the life song 8 the devil song 9 the hunter 10 evol 11 the train song 12 the flower song 13 boy by the roadside 14 the sunday song
  16. I agree with greenmachine... RH10><NH1 has got nothing to do with codecs and the eternal bickering which codec is better has no use whatsoever (bot in this thread...and not ever really IMHO)... just use what suits you and do not 'hate' ppl for using something else about the RH10><NH1 issue: for me it would be the RH10, mainly because I do not like the proprietary parts of the NH1 (battery, USB-cable) and the fact that it needs the remote/cradle to function properly (these often are the first parts to break in my exp) and I do like the OLED display of the RH10... or you could take the guess and just get the cheapest HiMD(-recorder) available at the moment and keep the big bucks till the third gen pops up (but when that will be and whether it will be significantly better is still uncertain)
  17. I don't really know about the UK... but 1350mAh gumsticks (from GP Powerbank) can be bought at nearly any electronics or camera store here in Belgium...
  18. as I said before (in this same thread)... I had weird buttonfunctions with my NH900 and I sent it in for repairs (to a Sony centre)... they completely fixed it and for no costs, as it was still under warranty as the RH10 hasn't been available that long, I guess you all still have warranty... just send the units in for repairs (and if you bought them abroad, just check whether the warranty is international) if you do not like to send your recorder to Sony...I guess you'll have to live with the malfunctions, as I do not have any idea where the prob itself is situated (loose connections, firmware messup,...?) or how you yourself would be able to fix it
  19. no problem...we're here to help! (but it is always wise to read the manual carefully in such situations)
  20. if you want to check whether it is something missing/remaining from previous installations... just follow the 'clean install' instructions from this thread and install SS3.2 if things still won't work... please post all info according to the rules so ppl can help more easily, thanks
  21. if you read the manual carefully, you will see that MP3, WMA, etc. are indeed supported formats, but not "as they are"... they will always be converted to atrac types (except for MP3 with 2nd generation HiMD's, but as you have an NH600 which is 1st gen, that won't matter for you) 1st gen HiMD's can only play atrac/atrac3/atrac3+ formats and PCM, so everything else will be converted prior to download
  22. fun (and beautiful) pictorial greenmachine, but you can bet someone will pop up and ask where you can buy such colorschemed sharps
  23. well, you've actually answered your own question: SP, so 292kbps Atrac (but it seems that Rombusters didn't mention this one as he answered with HiMD in mind...well actually he did "the original Atrac (which had a bitrate of 292kbps)" but only as a reference) (there is also fake SP @ 132kbps so actually disguised LP2, but that only is the case when doing a PC->usb->NetMD/HiMD transfer)
  24. I saw them at Werchter the same year as the show in Tilburg (must be at least four years ago, but can't really remember)... and even though I did enjoy their performance at the festival, I couldn't help wondering whether they actually played their instruments, as most of the show seemed prerecorded in a club NIN really shines, as they seem much more 'at ease' and they dare to take risks and improvise (which is always nice as it proves they are actually playing and not just mimicing)... as I said, 'hurt' semi-accoustically live in a dark club with only one pale light on Trent just lowers the room temperature by 10°C -> goosebumps all the way BTW: I missed Werchter completely this year, as I had still 'some' writing to do on my thesis (I had only just begun writing at that time actually )
  25. just listening to a chronological NIN-compilation (in HiSP): - pretty hate machine - broken - fixed - the downward spiral - further down the spiral (the live version of hurt just sends shivers down my spine) - the fragile (both sides) - with teeth I was hoping to fit 'with teeth' on it as well, but space is limited, even with 1gb... and I won't accept lower SQ for higher quantity... so no 'teeth', as I actually like the older work more *edit... looked again at the disc and realized I still had space left, so added 'with teeth' I saw NIN a couple of years back in 013, a small club in Tilburg (Netherlands) with "Atari teenage riot" as opening band, right after their percusionist was put away in psychiatry (again)... that evening counts as one of the hardest and best shows I have ever witnessed
