  1. nice pics...just as all of those you have provided these last few days greenmachine! but this time I've spotted MDCF (the Refault skin blue accents) shining in the shades (well reflecting in the LCD display and some shiny parts)
  2. you really should look into greenmachine's tips for building and hiding the mics that way even binaural recording can become easy and stealthy, eventhough I do not know whether the mics (well the cables on your back more likely) wouldn't be noticed in a patdown (I have inserted a pair of greenmachine's mics in existing croakies so I can remove them at the entrance, smuggle them in and attach them later...

I'm sorry, but I do not really know of a way to help you... even though there might still be a 'hack' developed... but about this: since SS3.2, you can rip without DRM, so that would answer your request I guess... but I personally would never only keep my entire music collection on 1 HDD... I do not trust computers (and definitely not HDD's) to last that long without any hickups and you only need 1 crash to erase all so if I think the music is <orth listening to, I use audio CD's (yes even store bought original CD's...I'm somewhat oldfashioned I know ) or Flac on DVD for safekeeping
  4. most Sony MD's work with a quite standard adapter, so if you look up what type it requires, you should most likly be able to find a generic type adapter that works... (on this page you can download the manual if it wasn't included as well) can you record from an analogue source (mic or line in)?

  6. been spending most of the weekend cooking for my girlfriend, sister and brother in law...I went for Italian as it is almost the only type of food they can all agree on: pizza and pasta mostly but with a lot of variation... so I guess I weigh about a ton more than before the weekend, as I not only ate with them, but I also had to taste everything while cooking of course
  7. after a bunch of (well informed) hints about a third gen and higher capacity (>1gb) discs... I don't think it is logical to talk about the imminent demise of the format itself at the moment... whether you and other consumers will choose to use HiMD, that's another question... but I for one will keep using my NH900 till it dies and hope to move on to a third (or if I treat my NH900 nice perhaps a fourth or fifth) gen of HiMD! untill there really is an alternative, I do not believe HiMD can die...
  8. hi, welcome to MDCF... your question actually has some kind of a double answer: - yes you are stuck with a machine that won't do what you want... the RH10 is a 2nd gen HiMD and only the 1st gen HiMD's could record in the old MD formats (though you can use old discs...but only in HiMD mode which is unplayable through old equipment) - but: HiMD allows you to upload you HiMD recordings through USB to your PC, on which you can then edit all you want and with SonicStage you can put the edited recordings onto discs in a format that can be played with old(er) equipment (if necessary) so, if you learn how to edit on a PC (which isn't that difficult if you use something like the free audacity; just check the downloads section) then you have gained a bunch of features in stead of lost some just use this thread as a guide to flawless uploading and learn to edit with audacity (within a couple of hours you will have got the hang of all the basic stuff, which probably is more than the older equipment could do) hope this helps
  9. hi, thanks for sharing your views... I firmly believe it is useful and interesting to learn about ppl's ideas/experiences, but I do have a few remarks about using that mic (please do not take this personal! I just would like to point a few things out so you might even improve your recordings...) according to the specs provided by minidisco: - it is a single point stereo mic which means the stereo image is rather limited. A stereo mic with two separate elements provides a better stereo soundpicture - it uses two opposing unidirectional elements to reach a sort of stereo omnidirectional pick up pattern. This could be nice for meetings with the mic in the centre, but for music coming mainly from upfront I doubt it is preferable... I would recommend two omni elements with a physical separator (like a head) in between - like most Sony mics it has a frequency response of 100 - 16,000Hz. As the human ear can hear 20 - 20,000Hz, you should realize that you are missing out on a lot of info with this mic. The relatively 'high' lower limit will be usefull as some sort of bass cut off in boomy clubs, but the info is simply missing from the recording and can never be restored...so I would prefer eq'ing afterwards during playback to remove excessive bass from the listening experience... So for recording meetings, lectures etc. this would seem like a nice mic (I use the mono version for interviews/lectures etc. myself) but I would definitely think about other options for recording music. At $50 it isn't really expensive... but for that amount of money you already have a SoundPro SP-BMC-2 (which surely is much better suited for music, just check A440's recordings in the gallery section) and still have some money left for a few beers at the venue you want to record If you are a bit handy and know how to solder, just look up greenmachine's instructions for DIY-mics and you have a pair of stereo mics that will even outperform the SP-BMC-2's for close to no money at all both options mentioned above (the SoundPro or the DIY mics) can be as small as 2x the Sony size (two pencil tip eraser sized elements) which is still ideal for those moments you do not like the mic to be easily noticable so no offence, but I think you could do a lot better for $50 if your main idea is recording music... actually I think you could always do better than a Sony mic, even when not mainly interested in recording music... just my opinions though...feel free to disagree

I believe there are actually two issues being mixed here: - atrac3+ > MP3? this is stuff for endless discussions and ABX tests and I do not really think that with 2nd gen HiMD this is the main issue - MP3 converted to atrac3+ on 2nd gen HiMD > original MP3 on 2nd gen HiMD? simply put... without eq'ing: yes with eq'ing: no I believe that this second point is some sort of an answer to the questions posed... so just choose, if you do not want to use the equalizer...convert, but realize that the total SQ will suffer even though it may superficially sound "fuller" and 'remember kids'... if possible just go from the CD straight to atrac3+ (not necessarily for SQ, but with HiMD it is still more useful because of space and battery life I believe...but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong)

  12. good tip, but I prefer to keep all my own recordings in Flac (or wav) if possible... I do not believe in a lossy format for storage and/or archiving
  13. - If these recordings haven't been uploaded before, uploading them with SS3.2 means you could upload them multiple times and even on different PC's... just check all the settings for importing and make sure that the recordings aren't erased from the disc - If these recordings have already been uploaded with anything <3.2, they can not be uploaded again... trying to upload again will erase the recordings from disc but to make recordings really DRM-free you really should convert them to wav (with SS>3.0 or with HiMDRenderer) and backup the wav just read and follow the instructions in this thread and you will not lose any recordings hope this helps
  14. nope, as this is related to the playback bug in the 2nd gen HiMD this has nothing to do with Sony marketing... unless you assume that Sony incorporated the bug on purpose so to make HiMD users believe that atrac really sounds better than MP3 (I wouldn't know, as I never used MP3 before)... but that would make it a dirty, cheating marketing trick and not baloney... - as the playback of MP3's on 2nd gen HiMD lacks higher frequencies, the converted atrac files do tend to sound fuller I believe... - but, as you use the eq to raise the highs, it should become clear that this 'muffling' is only part of the machine and not of the file and therefore correctable ... AND that a double lossy encoded atrac definitely sounds worse than the 'original' MP3 so... source = MP3: - yes, without eq'ing the converted atrac version will sound better... - no, after eq'ing double lossy encoding still ruins a track source = CD: - use HiSP, as it will sound ok and doesn't need 'special' eq'ing - MP3 and HiMD aren't really good friends yet I believe...

  16. I'm quite pleased with my Sen HD497's for close listening (and they are under $70) but for portrable (and home/portable mixed) listeing I would suggest some decent in ear type stuff line the panasonic RP-JE50's or sure's if you can afford those
  17. I've been going CD->SB->MD since I bought into,the format and haven't been disappointed yet... so, no need to complicate things when going CD->MD, just use SB as atrain suggested and all should be OK (with folders and all)
  18. yes it is... 1st gen needed to convert MP3 to atrac before it coult be transferred to MD while with 2nd gen, you can transfer MP3 as they are to MD... that would be a clear difference in my book but of course it is not drag'n'drop

  20. quite easy: - if you want the top model at the moment get the RH10 (preferably japanese import for LCD-remote and charging stand) - if you want to save money, get the RH910 or the NH900/800/700 - if you want looks and do not really care abut (expensive) proprietary parts, get the NH1 - if you only want to record through line in (not mic in) get the European (not the N-Am! NH600D) NH600 for really cheap - if you want to be able to ulpoad to mac, read this thread so my actual recomendation... if you can spare the money, order a Jap import RH10 from buyfromjapan @ e-bay

  24. the option isn't blacked out...but that doesn't mean it is there, just try it, it will crash at 36% or something. So I'm sorry, really no faster than realtime uploading with NetMD SS has a few editing features, only the merge tracks one is really useful and only with uploaded tracks (from HiMD)... I don't think you can edit imported (from CD) tracks just use the free audacity (can be found at the MDCF-downloads section...pictogram up right on the screen) well, I haven't visited any other one and all my problems (and my spare time) have disappeared thanks to this one
