  1. indeed this is not possible in any simple way...but there are some tricks to transfer libraries between computers described here on MDCF (see the link Keith provided) and otherwise you could always rip (withe exact audio copy, dbpoweramp music converter or anything alike) your CD's at work (DON'T convert them to MP3! this will result in quality loss) and convert them to a lossless format (like FLAC etc...) transfer them to your home PC, decode them to wav and import in SS... or buy a cheap external USB CD-drive for home that can read the CD's without problems greetings, Volta
  2. Welcome to MDCF neutron, please don't use 'return' that much There is no way to upload tracks through USB but through SS! There also is no way to recover files copied with explorer (this is actually an encoding issue, not a copyright/DRM issue)... so I'm very sorry Please read all the stickied posts (the very important ones) in both the "software discussions/faq's" and "live recording" (make sure you read Dex's one sure way for gapless CD-burning as in there the one and only sure uploading method is described) sections (this thread also belongs in one of them so it might be moved there) this will tell you all about the uploading possibilities and limitations... Yes it's a very stupid move by Sony to impose copyright on your own recordings...but there are ways around it: the upload once can be 'overcome' by the TotalRecorder (digital upload) method (which does require SS) but more importantly, once a file is uploaded, convert it to wav (with the internal wav converter since SS3.0 or with the brilliant Hi-MD renderer from Marcnet which can be found here on MDCF) then it is DRM free and open for you to do all you want (make backups, copying, burning to CD, editing,...) Volta
  3. To see your exact settings could always check tools/options/transfer/Hi-MD or Net-MD (whichever you use for making the discs)/transfer settings/check the boxes you prefer and also look at the advanced settings... This said, an MD-fomatted disc (one that will play on the sharp) can only play LP4 (bad quality), LP2 and SP... it will not take wav, MP3, Hi-SP,... so it will always convert these other formats and I believe LP2 is the standard. With SS or SB I would recommend to use LP2 only for MD-formatted discs, as they do offer SP, but it is fake (the size of SP but not the sound quality) but I guess you know this as you ask... one answer: with patience! Real SP only comes at realtime ransfer speeds or better recording speeds... Just connect your Sharp (NOT the RH10, as it can't record in anything else but PCM/Hi-SP/Hi-LP) to a CD player by analogue cable (line out on CD-player -> line in on Sharp) or optical cable (optical out on CD->optical in on Sharp) press play on the CD and rec on the Sharp and wait till it's done... (although it might have a syncro-rec mode which is much easier and puts in trackmarks, just read the Sharp's manual) hope this helps, Volta
  4. thanks all...just love to help ppl out ...and about my "knowledge" almost everything I "know" (which isn't all that much, I often enough find myself fumbling with inadequate terms on some topics ) I picked up here on MDCF myself (or from reading my user manual, which is something more ppl should do )...I just remember stuff from time to time and nagging about ppl posting the same questions over and over again is simply my second nature (my girlfriend sometimes hates me for that ) Volta
  5. every lossy converting of audio in theory stands for a degradation in sound quality...but in how much that degradation leads to unacceptable sound quality is mostly a subjective thing...so if it works for you, there is no reason at all not to use it (while at the other hand there are even ppl who would argue that 192kbps WMA is impossible to listen to even without further degradation...it all depends on how -impossibly- critical you are...) as Dex states (and I happen to trust Dex's hearing quite a bit) recording directly in LP2 is much better than the LP2 you get from software (SS/SB) it could be a good idea to record this directly...though others can't really hear the difference... but IMHO if you are using LP2, it probably means it's not intended for real hifi use so why bother realtime recording? and if it is intended for hifi use: use realtime recorded SP (from optical in) and not LP2. Also for hifi listening, don't start from WMA(@any bitrate) but use a CD or likewise quality (wav/PCM/flac/other lossless formats) files (->burn to CD and transfer optically)... but hey those are only my ideas...feel free to use whatever works for you Greetings, Volta PS: if you have a NH800 use Hi-SP through SS/SB (then you can use HiMD formatted discs and almost still fit more on them as LP2 on MD-formatted ones) and don't post these questions in the Net-MD/MDLP section as it concerns some other format entirely i.e. Hi-MD!
  6. Rh10: - pos: MP3 playback (though slightly crippled) and a very beautiful OLED-display - neg: easily scratchable, only japanese version comes with LCD-remote & charging stand, one of the expensive machines NH700: - pos: low priced, very decent (has most of the needed functions), runs of (cheap) AA-batts - looks cheaper than the more expensive models, is a bit bulkier cause of AA-intake these are actually two machines you'd buy for different reasons I guess...the NH700 when you prefer practicality and lower price over looks and don't need MP3, RH10 when looks and/or MP3-support mather but the best IMHO still is the NH900... greetings, Volta
  7. well... the initial point for MD was to replace audio casette which wouldn't allow digital uploading either. Net-MD is the last step in the MD evolution as they simply added PC->MD downloading. Then there was the Revolution called Hi-MD: higher density media (1gig) and digital uploading of recordings... So either you were informed wrong by your retailer, or you hadn't really looked into the spcifications and simply presumed USB connection was always in both directions (which actually sounds a bit logic I admit...but still do your research before you spend money) Analogue realtime rerecording on PC is actually your only real option, though there was some software that eased the process (which can still be found somewhere on these forums...but I would use audacity, as it is good, free and versatile...see the downloads section) If you have an MD player with a digital OUT and a PC (soundcard) with digital in, you could do it realtime digitally... If for the future (as the recordings made in any format except Hi-LP, Hi-SP or PCM can never be uploaded through USB) you want to avoid (analogue or digital) realtime recording, see if you could get a refund and buy a Hi-MD... they aren't that expensive and do allow what you were looking for: faster than realtime digital uploading greetings, Volta
  8. welcome to MDCF, answers to almost all of your questions can be found in the Hi-MD faq (here) except for: - the radio part (that could be found in the remotes faq) and the answer to which is: no - and the jogging-question...I don't jog, but when I suddenly have to run a bit and my NH900 isn't stored properly it skips sometimes (so an armband case or something could be useful) greetings, Volta
  9. I thought it was only about looks ...I like the NH1's look and one of the units Ishy reviewed the MZ-E900 but the OLED on the RH10 is simply stunning (though I'm not so keen on the glossy body) I'm sorry but there is absolutely no indication at all, whatsoever, not even a hint that Sony would take up legacy format-recording again! I know a lot of ppl hope for this, but I'm sorry, you'll have to get over it... it's not even certain Hi-MD has a future, but believe me (and Sony) legacy MD is dead as a dodo (and where did you hear/read magnesium bodies are coming back?) Volta PS: try to keep your posts focussed on one topic (especially when starting a new thread) cause if you yourself already go off topic immediately, everyone will be likely to follow (and I have just proven this statement by nagging about the possible features of future third gen units in a thread actually intended to comment on just the looks of existing units)
  10. that is the analogue TR-method which could just as well be performed with the free Audacity, as pre-HiMD recordings can't be played through the PC by USB->SS-connection which is necessary to do the realtime digital upload commonly refered to as "the TotalRecorder method" read this for the way to upload... and this to learn about the (digital) TotalRecorder method which won't work for pre-HiMD recordings Volta
  11. 1. I don't know, as I don't use MP 2. if oyu want to build a library use SS, if not use SB with Hi-SP...realtime recording is not necessary IMHO 3. (or 4. for you ) as far as I know it's FLAC->wav->atrac only 4. (or 5.) if you have a MD with ptical out you could record them optically to Hi-MD, upload through USB (I guess, can't see why it wouldn't work...) or rerecord them analoguely in Audacity (with quality loss) or simply use them as they are (SP sounds very nice on a RH10 I've heard) and buy new ones for future use greetings, Volta
  12. hm, that's the "startpage" of service mode ...this post explains all the steps after entering service mode for the hack greetings, Volta
  13. ehm..."Hi-SP vs. Hi-LP" as in the title yes and other atrac versions/bitrates also 'cause of the question for something between Hi-SP and Hi-LP and comparison to LP2...but I never saw anyone (especially not the topic-starter) mention MP3 before... therefore my surprise when your test popped up without any explanation Volta
  14. I've only just started and believe me I have not really got a master plan I just throw in a number of discs (by band) encode them (with tags) and burn a DVD and mark what I've archived in the database I once made of my CD-collection better to ask Dex about efficient archiving strategies using FLAC, he's been doing stuff like this for ages or perhaps Breepee2 FLAC-fanboy n°1 (you could PM them if you want) that was my problem also... I found myself listening to Hi-MD with sennheiser phones while working on my 'puter which actually had all that music in a library cluttering up my drive...so I decided to just throw out my SS library (it's useless anyway as it takes way too much effort to transfer it to another PC or to back it up). I have harman/Kardon boxes for my PC, but if I really want to use them in stead of my phones I just plug in my NH900 or one of my CD's/DVDR's... I'm studying in Brussels (in Etterbeek, VUB) but my sister lives in the centre and I like to have a drink a couple of bars around the St-Gorikshallen or the Rue de Flandre (Vlaanderenstraat)...but if you're in Brussels, be sure to check out the AB (Ancienne Belgique)... it is a very nice club with a lot of very good bands performing there ever so often and there is an Irish pub across the street
  15. no I'm afraid not, you could always goolge-search for it... I only have a NH900 and an old JVC (actually my girlfriend has that one)...you could always take it into a repair centre and let them have a look at it (but as I said, don't agree to have it repaired before they give you a decent estimate of the price, as it might not be worth it) But as this thread hasn't been very succesful, is full of unnecessary (for actually getting somewhere with your player) stuff, you own a Net-MD and this is most likely a hardware problem, I suggest you make a new thread (no poll )in the NetMD/MDLP-section with a very clear post about your problem... put in it: 1. the model of player (where you bought it from and whether it's still under warranty) 2. the circumstances: i.e. that you've never actually seen it working and the rapid switching of discs 3. the problem: description of the noise and everything else that (doesn't) happen(s) 4. the possible cause: something bent inside by switching discs? 5. your questions: - does anyone know what the problem could be by this description? - what does the inside of a healthy N710 look like? - what to do/try? or where to take it? hopefully someone in that subforum with more experience on these thing comes forward and helps you out...meanwhile we'll let the mods remove this thread as it hasn't really done much for you and sort of sits in the wrong place (software support) greetings, Volta R.Soul opened a new thread in the right place so this thread can be trashed
  16. ah, yes... I can see that the advantage of only wasting space on one copy of each track/CD in a music library could for some people outweigh the degradation from double lossy encoding (wav->Hi-SP->LP2) in stead of only once (wav->LP2) but only if one has and wants to use both Hi-MD and Net-MD like you... for ppl without Hi-MD (and plans to upgrade in the near future) just rip directly to LP2 in SS3.1 I (400+ CD's) don't use HD-space on my PC to store my music, I have most of these CD's in their physical form and am currently backing them all up in FLAC on CDR&DVDR... I transfer these to MD from time to time...I haven't got all my CD's on a Mdisc yet, but I can transfer them almost whenever I want so I don't think that's so big a problem... also I do not feel the need to have them with me all the time in some overly heavy music-library, I mostly use SB to transfer as the CD's don't need to be on my harddisk at all... but then again, I could be very strange as for recording LP2 realtime vs. transfering through software... I would go for software convenience too (and otherwise your Net-MD would be quite useless since you'd only use it as a MDLP) for discs intended for portable use...for higher quality I would record realtime, but in SP (as LP2 - even when recorded realtime - just doesn't sound as good when played under hifi-circumstances) Volta
  17. memoires of a short term memory: ah yes, I remember 24/06/2005 like it was yesterday
  18. happy birtdays corduroy (21st century schizoid man)
  19. nope, sorry...scan a bit through the live rec part...this has been addressed a lot before this has been addressed even much more times before (please search the forums before you ask these questions) and nope again: convert to wav (DRM free) and copy the wav files Volta
  20. yes, NH900 allows on the recorder editing but actually the NH1 (although through the remote) as well ...just read the NH1 user manual (pdf version can be found here) p53 and beyond yes, but it's possible that you wouldn't be able to access certain functions/features as they require the remote with the NH1 and I do not know whether (but don't think so) those lipstick type remotes offer all features... greetings, Volta
  21. no, try the cheapest suggestion first: just read above posts again...they don't see a need for a battery box at all unless you want to record really loud rock-shows (not traffic...that would be very quiet when recorded with BattBox). Just use mic->mic in with low mic sensitivity and low enough recording levels, and if it distorts try the cheap attenuator first (the soundpro gadget you found is the same thing) if you are mainly going to record rock concerts you could use a batt box and you can buy batt boxes with all functions you describe...but! - it will only control volume downwards i.e. not amplify the sound so that's useless as BattBox->line in won't be too loud, it would rather be too quiet so don't get this feature - bass-roll off is mostly considered as the very last option if your recordings (even with a battery box and line in) keep distorting because of the bass... it "blocks" (enormous oversimplification, but easy to understand) the lowest bass (with the best B-R O you can choose up to what frequency) from entering the MD-> this (again oversimplified) means that the bass isn't present in your recording so it can't really be repaired by equalizing and your recording could sound flat so if you can miss the money, you could get this option as a safety, but use it very precautiously...if you don't want to spend the money, don't get this feature as unless on very loud and bassy rock concerts you won't be needing it at all so recapulating: - buy the mics and experiment with the settings (manual rec level & mic sensitivity) - if the loudest sounds clip: get a cheap attenuator and experiment - if you're not satisfied with the attenuator, get a batt box OR - if quiet sounds aren't clearly recorded... save up for an external pre-amp which could also function as a batt box greetings, Volta
  22. hm...the only thing I can think of it that the rapid changes have disturbed/bended/blocked something essential inside (like the reading block or something)...you already said there was no foreign object lodged in there, but perhaps something from within the MD itself blocks either the rotation motor or the reading block best thing you could do was to let someone look at it that knows what a healthy MD looks like from the inside (perhaps at a service centre)... - if you still have warranty, don't explain precisely how it happened (the rapid changing bit) but just say that you inserted one disc and this happened... let them repair it on warranty - if you don't have any warranty... make sure you know what a reparation is going to cost you before you agree to let it be repaired 'cause some (actually a lot) of reparations turn out to be almost as axpensive as a new machine sorry I can't be of more assistance (except to ask again if you have checked the real basics: is the battery inserted correctly? hasn't it leaked or something? ...) Volta PS: I know this isn't really what you're hoping for, but if it turns out you have to ditch this player, nowadays there is (relatively cheap) Hi-MD to upgrade to if you needed to buy a new one
  23. no problem greenmachine...I'll let you outsmart me again on mic-wisdom soon enough
  24. it's not only about posting system specs, but if you would read the rules really good you would find this: your description: - just started? after a couple of posts you say so you've been rapidly changing discs (so rapid that you haven't even noticed whether the first one was read or not) if I understand this correctly, that is something else than "just"- this funny sound? that is the kind of clear description that helps...does it sound like it's jammed, somethings scraping, a beep, ??? try to give some description - just shows the battery info? and what does it say? full, empty, in between (where?),...? nothing else? tried to remove the battery and inserting it again? is the battery inserted in the right direction... have you tried anything? - after a while you state the inside is quite dusty...not a very clear description, but still can we presume you never looked into the unit before as you only mentioned this after a while? - you started this thread as a poll named "please help me!" (without further info) that actually was about "whether SS s*cked" or not... not really relevant as your's is probably a hardware fault and definitely not the way to induce ppl to help so sorry if we seem a bit rude... but you could have handled this plea for help a bit more tactful and with a bit more info for us to work from... greetings, Volta
  25. @greenmachine & 1kyle: please remember you are posting in the "NetMD + MDLP"-section guys... they really have no use for atrac3+@256kbps and will need to convert each MP3 (no mather what bitrate) to LP4, LP2 or (fake) SP in SS @newfie1970 & the rest my advice: - LP4, never, except for speech recordings! - LP2 (when encoded by your player and not with SS/SB as Dex always points out) sounds pretty good for real portable use (background noise, etc..) - SP (only when encoded by your player!! SS/SB only give fake SP which is only disguised LP2 and sounds like that too) is for those situations you really need quality (good headphones, silent background,...) choose between SP2 (convenience as it works with SS/SB, more space) and SP (near perfect quality, only realtime recording and takes up a lot of space) Volta PS: I wouldn't use this technique: it introduces two lossy steps (CD->HI-SP->LP2) and works with the SS-software LP2 encoder which is crap according to Dex... I would encode LP2 in the player itself for best quality and if you really need/want to use software either rip CD's in SS directly to LP2 or transfer with SB in LP2...
