  1. I do agree with atrain that you should be looking for a new one. But if you can live without MP3 playback, I would say look around for a downpriced NH900, as this is still a very good machine (better than 2nd gen in some respects) and the prices can be very low (try amazon and stuff) Greetings, Volta
  2. warning: this post may contain outright wrong info please read the posts following this one as well I only think that you will harm your recording the whole reason of going line in is that you ignore the pre-amp form the MD which isn't really suited for loud sounds or heavy bass. When you would go batt-box -> mic in, the incoming signal is much stronger than without a batt box, so the rec level should be much lower. This could create noise fromthe pre-amp (when rec level gets to low). You would still get clipping and distortion very easily, as the pre-amp is still active and still can't really handle loudness/bass. Ok, the mics are fed the right voltage and will be able to take higher dB's, but all hat advantage gets wasted by the pre-amp. If you really want to go mic in, an attenuator (like A440's avatar pic) is a better choice (and much cheaper). there was a rumour that setting timed trackmarks @ 60 min would override the automarking...but it seems it's only a story (there is a recent thread about this by Dex Otaku) The best method (IMHO) is to let the marks be added...just follow Dex's one and only excellent way of uploading without trackmarks or gaps where they have been... later you can do with the wav whatever you want... greetings, Volta
  3. Andy, welcome to the NH900-user club I'm pretty sure that you won't regret your choice, as the NH900 is the most practical unit until now IMHO. And about losing some style by returning the NH1...wait until you whip out your NH900 on the train, grab another 1gig disc and flick it in and as soon as the music plays and you grin widely from enjoyment, you will see all we-podders (there is no "i" in such a mass product ) turn green with envy, cause you just turned out to be way more stylish by your 'abnormal' player... greetings, Volta
  4. as Ishi already said, a number of members here on MDCF have had good experiences with the seller on e-bay... so unless you've got contacts overthere, I would suggest looking into his offer
  5. hair-old, please lighten up on the capitals... you realize it's like shouting in someone's ear? Also, don't overdo it on the punctuation...ppl will understand one "!" or "?" just as well as 3, 4 or even 7, but you won't seem as pushy. It is very unpleasant to read and if some Sony employee reads this forum (and I'm pretty sure some of them do) they will very easily skip such irate outbursts and pay much more attention to the calmly presented and strong arguments put forward in some other posts. greetings, Volta PS: I would not be making this remark if it was a one time only shout, but you've been doing this quite consistently throughout a number of threads I've read recently [attachmentid=385][attachmentid=386]
  6. I never used them, untill I bought me some Senn MX350's... These buds are quite big and after extended listening started to hurt a bit. I just thought, what the heck, let's try 'em with foamies... can't feel worse. So to my surprise, while they are even bigger with foamies, they felt great and even after 3-4 hour stretches I haven't noticed them in anymore (and definitely no more stinging in my auricle). What's even better, the foamies seem to lock out a lot of the surrounding noise. I listen a lot on the train and with the relatively silent Belgian trains and the foamies, I don't hear any (?? ) train noises anymore... So now I've gone ahead and got the MX450's which are much better for still a very cheap price and again I must say that the foamies have saved these buds for me greetings, Volta
  7. The real difference between line out and headphone out (both analog signals) is that line out has a higher output (comparable with playing at full volume) and the outgoing signal is not transformed in any way by the player (so comparable to playing without equalizing or Virtual Surround stuff or anything) so that you get a very strong and unmodified signal that serves as input for other machines (stereo, recorder, soundcard,...) The lack of line out on 2nd gen Hi-MD sure is a miss by Sony... but isn't so serious that it will render the machine useless. The best way (IMHO) to transfer older recordings to PC: - if you have a player with dedicated line out: go line out -> PC (soundcard) - if you don't: use the headphone out and turn all equalizing off and the volume to maximum (is more work as line out, but the effect is close enough) -> PC I really don't think that there is a reason to go line out (old MD) -> line in (Hi-MD) -> PC (through USB) unless in the folowing cases: - you have an older MD with optical out -> optical in on Hi-MD -> USB to PC (as this will give a clearer sound, no analog steps) (but then again your soundcard could have an optical in, in which case you can remove the Hi-MD step again) - you have a very crappy soundcard. In that case going MD -> Hi-MD (even with analog steps) could produce a better sound To really know what works best: just try all options open to you (with one test track) and compare results...if there is no real difference, go with the method with the least steps. When rerecording your recordings (either on the Hi-MD or on the PC) make sure you use wav/pcm or another non-lossy format, as every lossy format (Hi-SP, MP3,...) will reduce sound quality greetings, Volta
  8. try looking a bit further than the pinned threads... there are heaps of posts about Hi-MD-player not detected by SS in the software discussions/faq's and quite a number of them contain interesting tips and even solutions... spend some time researching these threads (use the search function if you can't find them) and if your problem still isn't solved...post a clear description of your problem and all extra info (as stated in the rules for posting in this subsection) good luck and greetings, Volta
  9. 1. I'd go for omni too 2. there are a lot of ideas floating around...just have a look in the live recording section for stealth setups or if you do not need stealth, just clip 'em on the side of a hat, glasses,... 3. just keep this rule in mind: - less than your ears are separated-> risk of losing the stereo picture - more than your ears-> risk of sounding very unnatural because of the increased stereo picture 4. greenmachine can give you some good tips on how to build your own mics and if you're in Europe and have got a lot of money to spend but really want something very good in return, you could check out Soundman mics (see also this thread) greetings, Volta
  10. search as Sushi suggested and upgrade to SonicStage 3.1 (openMG is really old junk )
  11. or you could buy a first gen Hi-MD and enjoy everything except MP3 greetings, Volta
  12. please don't post unrelated questions in existing threads. Noone will find your question here, it's also in the wrong subforums and it's not nice as it makes the thread go off-topic... search in the "software discussions/faq's"-subforum, as you problem has been addressed very often before... try solutions that are suggested and if the your problem still perstists (it shouldn't as there really are some solutions in there) read the rules, and post your question according to them... greetings, Volta
  13. have you read and tried all suggested solutions in this thread? another solution can be found here and it could be interesting to read the entire thread (as there are some more suggestions in it I believe) good luck, Volta PS: try upgrading to SS3.1 while you're at it PS2: please post your complete specs according to the rules, this really helps ppl who want to aid you
  14. read this thread as the thing about tuner remotes not working on other MD's is explained here and then this one for full info on remotes greetings, Volta
  15. - you will be able to use the RM-MC40ELK (3line remote,NO tuner, ships with NH1 mostly, costs about $70 and is a bit too specialised IMHO for use with a download-only model, as it really shows its use in stealth recording situations...but it's your money, so you are free to do what you want) - you won't be able to use any tuner-remotes (like RM-MC39LT shipped with the NH800) as they have a different plug type hope this helps, for further info read Yamagatacamille's guide to MD-remotes greetings, Volta *edit: added some color to answer darkangels next question...again
  16. I really do not mean to annoy you Will, I reacted the way I did cause a lot of ppl with questions do not 'know how a forum works', and by finding a thread in a wrong subforum I (wrongly perhaps) assumed that a refreshing of rest of the customs when confronted with a problem could be useful. I'm glad to hear you already searched and tried different previous suggestions (if you would have mentioned it, I would never had suggested them)... and I'm really sorry they didn't work as I already said, you should not post in the right subforum cause 'it bothers someone' but just because you probably would get a lot more response from ppl who do now their software better than me please do, the forum can always benefit from extra knowledge (and me too) greetings, Volta
  17. 1. hardware/os are two different things: hardware = hardware, OS = basic (in the sense of 'needed for anything ese to run') software 2. drivers are software (to make the hardware run properly) 3. since windows XP, most drivers are actually automatically included and don't need to be installed manually (it works on your sisters PC doesn't it?) 4. SS normally includes drivers for Sony hardware...but here the problem is situated: for one reason or another on your PC (it works with your sisters PC, while she didn't download any extra drivers, I'm guessing) SS hasn't installed all elements properly (so a software issue, not?) 5. so now that we've established that this belongs to the software discussions/faq's section (not to pester you, just that your post has much more chance to be answered in the rigt subsection)... we can see that the 'won't recognize'-problem has been dealt with before (like in the threads I've suggested) and that a number of solutions are presented... my idea, try them 6. if then (after you've tried them all) your player still won't connect, we can put that yours is a special case and ppl reading the software discussions/faq's can try to suggest things, while they know what not to suggest, as you've tried the previous solutions already... you get the idea? first search if your problem is already addressed somewhere on MDCF, then read all threads relating to it, try possible solutions, report back, either with a success story or with a clear question because it still won't work (accompanied with a clear description of the problem/ parameters/ system spec/ previous attempts/...) so ppl know what to suggest please understand I'm not trying to pester you, I'm actually trying to help you (I even looked up the threads for you) but knowledge requires effort, so please read/search a bit and try the possible sollutions before you expect ppl to spell out 'the solves-all perfect solution' (which probably won't exist even) and do all work for you hope you will find a solution, Volta *edit: I kinda read over the INF-thing before, I'm no expert, but perhaps someone knows a simple solution for that specific problem...but a clean install of SS (as bescribed here) might be a good start anyway
  18. welcome to MDCF Will, but this really is a software support question, so I guess the Mods will move it there... I don't know if it suffers from the same problems as Hi-MD when it comes to being recognized by SS, but no harm in trying... there are a lot of threads dedicated to this problem: try searching the "software discussions/faq's"-section for all "Hi-MD/player not recognized by SS"-threads (like this one or this one)...a number of possible sollutions have been suggested yet greetings, Volta
  19. you could also try the RM-MC38EL that was shipped with the NH900 Euro (at least I got one with my NH900 Euro)... it's not top notch, but it is a decent enough LCD-remote and I haven't felt the need yet to upgrade greetings, Volta
  20. welcome to these forums Shione, indeed, but if he's selling his NH1 without the remote he will very likely fetch relatively little money for it, as some of the functions of the NH1 actually require the remote... so that would only really be practical if he'd keep the NH1 or buy another rm-mc40elk remote (but that's expensive, $70 or so) greetings, Volta
  21. I've got the MX350's ($10) and MX450's ($15) (see my signature) and I do like them (especially the 450's as they have symmetrical cords and sound more natural) but be prepared to use some equalizing 'cause they don't really have a lot of bass (they have some, but to hear them eq'ing is needed) they come with a 1m cord which is really exactly the right lenght for me...I can clip the remote to my belt and the buds in my ears and there is absolutely no useless bit of cord dangling round whatsoever... but they definitely are an (very cheap) improvement compared to the sony stock buds greetings, Volta
  22. one has got to realize that beauty is only skin deep... but ugly goes right to the bone (sorry if this one is really old, it's not to me)
  23. that explains it... just wait and see if the final price still is a steal then (I really think it's a bit of overkill for a NH600D though)
  24. nope, I wasn't...I just remembered the thread (and the post) wrong ! The post actually stated that VBR and CBR MP3's should be able to convert and/or transfer without problems sorry, I'm afraid I really can't help then... Volta P.S.: I really know as much about MP3 as I do about knitting sweaters... nothing whatsoever!
