  1. This thread died in the big MDCF-crash in April... but the subject was quite funny and I'm actually interested what in the different parts of world is considered a PC-snack! as my first post, this might be a bit disappointing, but I'm a bit sick (have got a mean cold) at the moment... so I'm munching on some toast and OXO-soup (beef broth), had some tea and throatmints before... [attachmentid=344][attachmentid=345] So, just let those menus coming Greeting, Volta...and enjoy your meal
  2. there used to be a "What are you eating in front of your PC?"-thread, but it died in the big MDCF-crash in April... I think it's time to bring that one back to life! Volta
  3. I prefer Belgian Waffles (both types, from Brussels or from Luik/Liege)... just pop over and try some if you have the time
  4. Happy birthday Greenmachine! and a big personal thank you for all the mic-related tips you have given me (and the rest of MDCF) keep up the good work and your plea for clean unedited recordings! best wishes, Volta
  5. yes, get a NH900 RH10: -pro: (crippled) MP3-playback, OLED -contra: no line out, no accessories unless bought from Japan, no real backwards compatibility, looks plastic NH1: -pro: looks nice (magnesium body), good remote, timestamp -contra: proprietary battery, proprietary USB-connection, needs charging cradle, needs remote for certain functions, no battery add-on, still (very) expensive NH600: -pro: cheap, has most of Hi-MD features, good as a player -contra: cheap and looks a bit that way, less features, has no mic in, bulkier NH900: -pro: has almost all Hi-MD goodies (including line out) except for timestamp & MP3-playback, comes in all regions with 'full' accessories (remote/cradle) and Eurocapping can be easily hacked, very sturdy (half aluminium/half plastic), slim without AA-add-on, but has the possibility for AA-add-on, generic spare parts (3V adapter, gumstick battery) so easily replacable/upgradable,... (too much to mention all of them ) -contra: no OLED, no MP3-playback (though I couldn't care less), no timestamp (same as previous), not the best remote (but MUCH better than the non-LCD of the non-Japanese RH10), not that cheap yet (depends, has been sold for £70, but you have to look around for a deal) but if you HAVE to choose between RH10, NH600, NH1...it depends on whether you need the backwards compatibility (NH1 then) or you don't (RH10, just because of the proprietary bits of the NH1 which I really don't like and the nice OLED of the RH10 which I really do like... but make sure they repair the titling bug before they ship it and look around for a decent remote) greetings, Volta
  6. sorry to be a wise@ss, but Hi-MD does allow for file transfers, but definitely NOT for copying music, which the program now thinks your doing, as it doesn't recognize your PC as the same PC it was before! BTW: if it were tracks you recorded yourself analoguely (through mic or line in) SonicStage will always only allow uploading once! (then you have to convert to wav and do whatever you want, but no way of uploading through SS twice) greetings, Volta
  7. As long as Sony is the only Hi-MD manufacturer out there, I guess we just have to live with SonicStage and make the most out of it (but thanks to this forum, almost all strange issues can be resolved ) First of all, I agree almost 100% with A440 but he actually stated "If you can find one, and you care about line out, get a NH-900...Or get an NH-700 or NHF-800", he never recommended the NH1... as I read your post, I feel obliged to say: "NO" to the NH1. It is indeed the 'flagship', but you have to make some saccrifices for that. - It has a proprietary battery (so you can only buy a 'spare' from Sony, and not very cheap). - It has a proprietary USB connection on the recorder, so if you lose your USB-cable or want a second one, it's (a lot) more money to Sony. - It can (as far as I know, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) only be charged when in it's charging cradle, which is not practical as it's yet another part to take with you when traveling. - It uses the 3-line remote, which you like less than the lipstick model ( unlike alomst anyone else here on MDCF). - It really requires the remote, as not all functions can be accessed through the recorder - It still costs like a top-of-the-line-model would (even now that here's a new generation) would I recommend any of the 2nd gen, no not really, as (like A440 stated) the sacrifices you have to pay to get MP3-palyback and that (beautiful!) OLED-screen are just too big. Besides, (perhaps not when buying in Singapore ) the N-AM and European versions of the 2nd gen are really limited (no charging cradle, NO LCD-remote,...) my recommendation is: "search for a NH900" with e-shops, electronics shops... and certainly not only in Singapore, anywhere should do, as long as you get a decent price. - The European version comes with full accessories (like that handy lipstick remote and charging stand...so no worries) but with the soundlevel capping (but that can be removed, see my signature). - It uses a generic USB-cable and generic 3V adapter (so spare parts won't cost an arm or a leg). - It comes with a (not so good) gumstick battery, which can easily be upgraded to a much better but cheap (+/- €8) Powerbank GP stick (or anything alike, you even could order the better 14mAh Sony gumsticks for very little money). - Besides that, it has a (removable) AA-battery addon, so you also can record long periods at once (and after upgrading your gumstick, you also have a spare so you'll never run out of power!). - The only thing the NH900 really lacks compared to the NH1 is the clock and the "timestamp" function, but really, if you need to know at what time you recorded something, you either write it down or put it in the title (no need to spend extra for that). - The NH900 also has a line out function, which isn't necessarily better than just cranking up the volume, but it definitely is easier! - The NH900 is half metal (aluminium) half plastic, but it looks strong and (while not as beautiful as the RH10or NH1) quite pleasing to the eye. ...in short, the NH900 (in my opinion, and I have thoroughly looked into the NH1 when choosing it, and into the 2nd gen when they came out) has everything a Hi-MD should have (especially accoring to your needs as specified above) except perhaps for the blinking OLED , but the NH1 hasn't got that either... Choose well, but remember my and A440's words... Greetings, Volta
  8. RH910 can do this also (this is the 2nd gen 'one level cheaper' model than the RH10) and perhaps even on the RH710 (don't really know whether it has mic in though) as for MP3 playback: check this thread as Sony allows MP3 playback alright, but they won't let it sound as good as atrac Greetings, Volta PS: if you forget about MP3-playback, the NH700, NH800, NH900 and NH1 will record in PCM (=wav) too...and they have their own strenghts
  9. if all you want to do is transfer CD's to MD, use SimpleBurner in stead of SonicStage! no need to put everything in a library first... just throw in a CD, press transfer, wait a bit, pop out the CD, pop in the next one and repeat until your disc is full... I use SB all the time, only use SS to upload my own recordings to PC greetings, Volta
  10. Happy birthday Daremo! glad to see someone here from that blessed year 1979 hope the day treats you fine...
  11. hm, not taking any stance in the discussion whether the MP3-crippling was intentional or not, but I just have to correct a few things here... -Sony IS saying that atrac is superior (they still mention atrac3+ 64bps being superior to MP3 128bps in the presentation of the HD5 on the sony Belgium site [attachmentid=337] left in the sidebar: "Perfect quality: on the network walkman HD5 you can play MP3 files without conversion AND enjoy the superior sound of ATRAC3plus" and in the picture: "with atrac3plus at 64bps you can get more onto one CD(??)...and still in a better sound quality than with MP3 at 128bps" -I would call "disabling the 6band equalizer on the HD5 when playing MP3's" (see also this thread) intentional crippling of MP3-playback quality/options (see my post up higher), wouldn't you? ok, it's not on Hi-MD, I guess (has anyone checked whether their eq-settings work when playing MP3's?) but it reveals Sony's intentions to ALLOW MP3 playback, so they won't be erased by all other HD-players out there, but they definitely don't feel obliged to make it sound as good as Atrac! greetings, Volta
  12. I didn't notice this last time...but please don't leech on other threads! (I mean, don't post a DIFFERENT question in an existing thread... this makes the thread go of topic, which isn't nice for the one who started the thread, as he/she wants his/her question answered, not yours. but it also isn't useful for you, as only a few ppl will find your question here, as the thread's title doesn't refer to it!) besides, search a bit before you ask... ppl have mentioned this workaround already (but it's a bit of work though) and you might find a lot of other (easier) tips/tricks you could try greetings, Volta
  13. A couple of things: -this is clearly a software related issue, please post such questions in the software discussions/FAQ's section next time (in the meantime one of the mods will probably move this thread there) -if you had read/searched MDCF and especially the aforementioned Software subsection a bit you'd have seen that this is a very frequent issue and that a lot of tips have already been given (like this workaround, which is a bit of work though) -if you have any software issue: please read the rules, read ALL FAQ's, search the forums (using the search function AND by scanning the software-section) and if you still have a problem that persists, post (system specs) according to he rules...the rules aren't designed to pester members but to get all the relevant info to help, without having to ask for it EVERY time (you see, most of this post wouldn't have been necessary if you had simply followed this simple structure) -if you have to reinstall, ALWAYS follow the clean install as described in the software FAQ's and ALWAY make sure you've used the SS library back-up tool, otherwise we'll be solving the 'I-reinstalled-like-you-said-and-now-my-library-won't-open'-problem next week -never and I mean never downgrade to anything before SS2.3! all SS versions before this are unstable and won't be supported by MDCF (if you have any question, ppl will tell you 'upgrade to SS3.1)... -better still...never downgrade! SS3.1 (apart from the initial issue of not recognizing the player) is widely aknowledged as the best SS version (most stable, better library structure,...) till now so, hope you put some effort into searching next time and also hope you get your problem solved! greetings, Volta
  14. or get a soundcard with optical in and play the MD through the deck straight into the PC...could cost a bit, but erases a lot of steps and if you insist on doing it your way, why not record in PCM on the Hi-MD? this would eliminate the quality loss that a lossy format like Hi-SP still is... greetings, Volta
  15. also, if you don't mind a bit of extra work, you could try this workaround which you would have easily found yourself if you had read /searched the older/other posts in the 'Software discussion/FAQ's'-section a bit... please remember, knowledge requires effort so please search before you ask (the same question that has been addressed so many times before)... Greetings, Volta
  16. seems like this workaround works, though it's a lot of work... otherwise...just post specs like kurisu asked greetings, Volta
  17. strange, never noticed that myself, but then again, I don't really remember if I've ever transferred a compilation album before (I should check this) yep, as I said, I don't really know whether this also works for HD-walkmans, but it's actually the application I mostly use when transferring CD's to Hi-MD (it doesn't put the CD in a music library, but transferres directly, which I prefer)...just have a look in the downloads section here on MDCF (icon on the top-right of each page) you can download it from there...
  18. well, as I don't have a HD-walkman, my knowledge is quite limited... but wouldn't this mean that when selecting play by album->'the rocky story' you would hear the album as it should be... furthermore, I believe you can (at least on Hi-MD's) move tracks around an regroup them (but this is manual labour!) I think I remember this fault of SS (not being able to transfer groups as groups) being called one of the most irritating features! (I didn't realize it also happened with compilation albums) have you tried importing the CD with Simple Burner? (or doesn't SB work for HDs?) greetings, Volta
  19. welcome to MDCF StegStu, have all the tracks (in SS) got 'the rocky story' as album name (right click a track and select 'properties')? with correct track numbers? has the walkman the possibility (main playback mode with Hi-MD) to play by album? ... see if any of these little things make a difference... good luck, Volta
  20. sweet, worked like a charm! this place get's better (and nicer) everyday I would say, don't fix it! just another means of pressure to get ppl to switch over to Firefox ...BTW if only windows update and trendmicro would learn to work under the Foxy-browser, then I could really get rid of that liabilty that IE is
  21. darn, what browser r u using? I, with firefox1.04 (dutch version), can only see a static MDCF blue-'M' and with yuck-now-I-have-to-wash-my-mouth-again-after-saying-this-IE (yes, I was so desperate to see the icon change I dug up my IE again) I even won't get that! we in Belgium want our dynamic icon!!
  22. elisa, have a look around in the 'software discussion/FAQ's' section's previous posts...there are already a lot of different threads that deal with the 'SS won't recognize Hi-MD'-problem and these have a lot of tips you could try... if the problem persists, please post your system specifications as explained in the 'rules for posting in support-related subforums' (the pinkish line above the list with posts when you go to 'software discussion/FAQ's'-subforum) otherwise it will be very hard to determine the culprit element! hope this helps, Volta
  23. I'm glad you've got your software working... that link you provide could also be useful for other ppl (haven't come across anyone else who mentioned he/she couldn't remove SS from the software list, but you never know ) if you can get hold of a digit camera, take some pics from all sides for a pictorial (always welcome) and a thorough product review will always be appreciated! greetings, Volta PS: could you please report back on this question: does the 6 band equalizer on the HD5 really not work when playing MP3's? (as was stated by the sonystyle shop and quoted by me in this thread) perhaps you even could do the spectrum analysis from an MP3 played through the HD5 as some superb additional info to that same thread...
  24. I would get mine fixed right away, on Sony's costs of course...and I would ask if they could throw in an OLED while they are at it sorry, just a bit jealous of that feature (and only THAT feature) of the 2nd gens
  25. I'll second that, but in the meantime: -256bps for playback & speech recording -PCM for music recording
