Format's demise leads to Australia facing massive Minidisc liquidation.
tommypeters replied to Christopher's topic in News
$2301AUD or some strange sum like that. But it's not so much cheaper, take a couple of days longer, and you may have to sign for it ang get it at the Post Office... Edit: For instance 3-5kg to Sweden: * ECI Courier $120.50, 2-3 business days for delivery, insurance up to $5000. * Insured Airmail $104 (plus insurance, I guess), 5-10 business days, insurance up to $2351. -
To have for playing on your computer, instead of having an extra file with compressed FLAC or uncompressed WAV. As if we wanted to use SonicStage more than necessary...

My package is also on it's way I also checked airmal - Australia Post does have a possibility for Insured Airmail instead of Courier, but the price difference is pretty insignificant. The only problem with courier mail I can see is that it's 100% guaranteed to have me pay Swedish customs and high VAT... -
Let's come up with a name for the ATRAC3plus 352kbps bit rate.

Instead of answering in PM I'll answer here: I-352 is the U.S. "Immigration Form", you need to fill it in if you want to move there. The music is also immigrating to the Hi-MD... A tad long name, though -
He's far from cheapest. Actually among the most expensive, but very reliable. If you can't wait for an occasion when it can be found cheaper in an auction you can buy it there. If you can wait, try the auctions from reliable Power Sellers on eBay. I bought from Rapidelectronics (Australia) and while most went for almost $70USD I got mine for a bit over 50.

Yes, the "L" in 33EL / 35EL / 40ELK indicates backlit.

I hope my package will be sent very soon... -
For me, usually Hi-SP sounds better than SP even though the bitrate is lower.

Immigration-SP You'll understand if you know what an I-352 is... -
No, store prices are crazy... Minidisc.au sell the 40ELK for over AUD140, add 50% more to that price and they will throw in a MZ-NH1 Hi-MD, a Sony microphone, 10 MD's, a player case and a ATRAC CD...

You could have taken a beer or two... (not just a bear or two)
-
I bought my 40ELK on eBay. It was repeatedly going for $70USD including shipping, which is more than I paid for my NH600, but I waited patiently and finally got it for just over $50USD (new).
-
As I understand it, though I haven't installed SS3.3 either, it would just use up more space on your hard disc.
-
Well, it seems good enough explained at this forum now as well... Lossless for playing on the PC, prepared for quick DL without conversion to Hi-MD. Instead of having one FLAC + one OMA file.
-
The 40ELK has an advantage there, you can browse through your groups/tracks while listening and it doesn't skip to another track until you actually "say" so. With other remotes it will immediately quit playing the current track, jump to the selected group, jump to the next track... So you can't just "look around" at what you have on your disc without the 40ELK.

I guess the difference in sound quality is much smaller than in bitrate/storage cost. If people think "Doesn't 352k sound better than this?" Hi'MD could get a reputation for inferior sound, but now - at a "Make or Break" situation for MD - they give the customers all options and let them (us) decide. Nice. So a "new" 256kbps Hi-SP could sound discernably better than when imported at "standard" quality? Maybe on more complicated music, music with certain frequencies - the music for which I have used PCM instead of Hi-SP. It has felt a bit too little extra sound quality for the extra space used by PCM, now maybe I can go from 80% to 100% Hi-SP. Or some 352kbps, if it will sound any better. I will wake up another computer and install SS3.3 on, I've had so much trouble with these programs I won't take any chances with my working SS3.2...

Well, I have to be doubly - or triply - identified by now... -
I don't think it's hard to hear the difference between PCM and Hi-SP, but for most music it doesn't matter since Hi-SP is good enough anyway.
-
Seems like a misuse of the word Lossless... "It doesn't lose any quality compared to Hi-SP when transferred to a player", maybe...?
-
I saw it sold in pink also, yeach...
-
It will be interesting to see the bottom line of this... ...and to hear if @352 sounds any better than Hi-SP. That would mean that I could use that instead of PCM for that 20% of my music where I think Hi-SP isn't really up to it.

You can save $15AUD from the $72AUD shipping cost of a NH900 bundle if you forfeit the discs, the case and the ATRAC CD. The NH900 and the microphone could be inside the $57 shipping cost, that's if the NH900 pack with manuals isn't heavier than the E310 pack. Then you would have to drop the mic as well...
