but for playback in audiophile purpose (deck at home) and in car, Himd is better than Ipod.
-
Waiting that a lot of himd portables are sold before commercializing decks and car units is an error from Sony, because himd gets his full potential as an audiophile and the most easy to use medium in a car (I know a friend that used md in the pass , now has Ipod but still uses his md car unit: nothing can compete with md in a car!). Note that this friend never heard of Himd, so don't tell Sony ever advertised it. Note that Onkyo produces himd deck (japan only...) , so don't tell a giant like Sony cannot do the same. It wouldn't be expensive for example to take old MDS-ja 20ES and just change optical and encoding/decoding circuitery : this would be a fantastic audiophile deck! Idem with an old style car unit. And if, as you mean Sony don't even has the money to waste for it, how can you explain they found money to waste in changing format of boxes with first 1GB DISC, and changing stamp screen format with blue 1GB himd? for these stupid and useless changes they had to modify entire MD production lines!!! REALLY SONY STRATEGY WAS IMCOMPREHENSIBLE BUT: a change has come with SS 3.4 , that let us hope Sony will liberate the full potential of HiMD .

I would buy Sony booshelf if it had FM bandwith compatible with europe. helas...

Hope you are right, but I m afraid you have to look at Onkyo for Himd.

I have rh-10 an dh-10p. to my ears, dh10p sound better than rh-10. dH-10P takes good photos but only in day light because Sony didn't add a real flash light (why ? one more Sony missed it!) Dh-10p with real flash light, 2Mega pixels ( no more is needed for 10x15cm impressions or computer screen viewer), 3x integated zoom, video(mpeg4 or mpeg2 SQ quality is possible at 0.7MB/s)and micro input, would be the perfect machine!!

did you also have a look at the link I put in my post? Hi-MD at 3.51 AUD Since ss 3.4 has come ,I have conviced 3 of my friend that never had MD before to adopt the format! I think hi -md car unit for example could convice more people, for it is much more easy to use in a car than an MP3 pluggin And my opnion is that with recent improvements in sonicstage, once someone has adopt the format, will not give up. Of course if no Himd deck or car unit come...

My post just said the contrary :less than 3 USD is cheap for 1GB compact and removable, rewritable up to 1 000 000 cycles, and long time storage ability.
-
I never lost one DATA/music that I had transfered to Md or Himd since 1995! ( but I've learnt to use only Sony or TDK discs)

Himd at 3.51 Australian dollar: e-shop

I'm very enthousiast with your site Mave Block! Although I think only a HiMD deck would be trully audiophile ( An mds-ja20ES based himd deck would sound fantastic!), it's a good way to promote MD. HImd car unit would also something mp3 players couln't compet: with good amplifier and speakers (and motor with good isolation), A car is a good place for enjoying Music. If only Sony could understand that... We have to make advertising work that Sony never made fo HimD: promote it like universal media , data storage , music player including Mp3, Audiophile music recorder for musiclovers and musician AND removable media at cheap price: less than 3 $ on the web himd at 3.51 AUD

Atrac 3+ is for me much better than old atrac codec especially in 256kbps (hiSp) and 352KBPS: for example I don't have artifacts with Miles Davis trumpet anymore and transitory sounds are sharpest. Of course PCM mode for full enjoying of music is great!

...And my minidisc.de (germany) have finally update to my mp3 .de BUT with md! just have a look: My minidisc.de

Sony is sutpid! when himd arrived they promised himd car unit, and nothing have come! A hi-end deck and a car unit is just where Ipod cannot go!
-
hey 1kyle, you seem to be around these days. some months ago you said you actually boot from himd and installed linux application on it. I tried unsuccessfully to add boot sectors on himd as you told using nero, as I find "make a bootable CD" but no "make an bootable USB disc" in nero. could you give more explanations? Thank you in advance.

To upload prerecorded md without any quality loss, I do this: 1)play the prerecorded with a home md deck (JA20ES or other) which have optical output. 2)record with himd in pcm mode 3)uplooad to your pc with ss 3.4 very simple!!
-
It is very strange: I made the same, and I didn't have any problem. perhaps, you forgot to check out the " add copy protection" when you ripped your cds in ss3.3?

MDS JA 20ES is the best sounding md deck I've ever heard. Compared to it, JB 980 sounds so bad! Onkyo Hi md decks lacks of phones output Please Sony take MDS JA 20ES basical electronic mechanical and I/O structure, and just change to HImd optical/magnetic heads ,as encoding/decoding circuitery to HIMD's. This doesn't need much R&D. And Please one HIMD car unit!!!

obviously he means 1GB...

As DVD (655nm wavelength) recorders are able to read/record CD (780nm wavelength), I don't see why it wouldn't be able to read old MDs. Higher capacities would be interesting for video camcorder. (Although 1GB MD can hold 3Hours of good divx/mpeg4)
-
NO,Hi-Md uses the same Laser Wavelength (λ=780nm) than old school MD or CD. It uses another data organisation (HDD like) and DWDD (deplacement Wall...) proces to increase discs capacities. On the contrary, MD VIEW and DVD uses a 655nm Laser Wavelength that is shorter but still red light laser That's why a simple combination of data organisation (HDD like) and DWDD with MD VIEW or DVD 655nm Laser Wavelength should increase Md capacity to 5GB A combination with blue ray laser should actually increase to 20GB!!

That is nonsens: 2nd Gen of HiMd don't record in true SP . I could understand this is in purpose to stimulate sails of Himd decks and himd car unit. But Sony doesn't produce any HImd car unit nor USB in car unit!!! For the consumer who bought only 2nd gen HImd, it is impossible to hear his music in car! that is SCANDALOUS!!!

MZ-dh10 is not so bad camera but only in daylight, because sadly there is no real flash on this unit

NEW: Sony Hi-MD Walkman Players - MZ-EH70 and MZ-EH50
garcou replied to betamaxDATminidisc's topic in News
HIMD discs can record 0.5MB/s (4000kbps) and playback 0.7MB/s (5700kbps) datarate: it corresponds to high definition mpeg4 video or SQ mpeg2 (standard quality used by dvd recorders). Only HQ mpeg2 is impossible ( premium High quality with dvd recorders). Sony could make himd video recorder/camcorder, no problem. (15 min of mpeg2 SQ video on ane Hi-md, or 30 min mpeg2 LQ , 3 hours of good divx 6.0 video) -
Do not agree. As combo DVD-RW can burn CD-RW , it is technically possible to keep compatibility with old 80min MDs.
