I think though that because ATRAC3 is older it uses less power than ATRAC3plus, making Lp2 and Hi-LP equal as far as battery life is concerned, I'm still weaning back and forth on which bitrate I should use. All my songs were originally transcoded from mp3's ranging from 128-192kbps, if that makes any difference.
-
Here's a chart from sony themselves: Although I should probably take it with a grain of salt, since everyone seems to think 132k sounds better than 64k.
-
What sounds better for playback and is more friendly for battery life in your testings? Sony claims ATRAC3plus 64kbps = ATRAC3 132kbps, true or false?
-
Stuge, I recently read that ATRAC3plus 64kbps was made to replace ATRAC3 132kbps. Is this correct? Meaning that the 2 are equal?
-
After doing some testing with speakers at very high volume using line out, I can hear that LP2 is better than HiLP. All the songs on my HD1 are now in LP2. And after reading Stuge's review of the HD3 saying he got 27 hrs of playback using 132kbps, I'm psyched. I'm surprised it lasts that long at a higher bitrate like LP2, but that is simply fantastic.

That's what I was thinking. What is the real difference between ATRAC3 and ATRAC3plus as far as sound? And if I was too use ATRAC3 132 files (I have them already saved on my computer, along with all my HiLP files) on my HD1, how much would battery life take a hit?
-
Gives the best trade off between Sound Quality and Battery Life? I've always been using HiLP (ATRAC3plus @ 64kbps). But have just recently been doing some experiments with ATRAC3 @ 132kbps, and quite honestly, I can't tell any difference between the 2. So that's why I prefer HiLP over ATRAC3 @ 132. If I did start using ATRAC3 @ 132, battery life would also probably take a hit. How about you guys? Can you tell a difference between ATRAC3 132 and ATRAC3plus 64?

Okay good. That pretty much proves what I said that the HD1 = HD5 in SQ. As far as the NW-S700 series, I obviously can't compare, but that's ok as I have no interest in flash players right now and noise canceling, etc. For things where I like to have a player of smaller capacity, I use my HiMD units.
-
BUMP Very annoying issue needing some fixing.
-
I was comparing it to what I remember from my HD5, and the HD1 seems to play the same. I have no interest in the NW-S700 series or any small flash players right now. I think compared to the HD5, the SQ is the same. When you compare your HD3 to your HD5 do they sound the same to you? (my understanding is that the hd1 and hd3 sound the same).

You will have little luck finding any store besides sony style that sells units. And you won't find anything like the n1 or n10 anywhere. Some walmarts, best buys, etc. may have some left over discs and entry level net md units, but besides that, you won't find anything.

Sony Network Walkman NW-HD1 Sorry for the blurriness, I have a crappy camera. But here is my NW-HD1. Review Build Quality/Overall Look: Perfect, doesn't get much better. Compared to my stolen HD5, which was all aluminum, it had to be of equal or great build quality. And the brushed magnesium alloy tops it! All metal is perfect as it is built like a tank and cannot be scratched, and the brushed silver magnesium looks perfect! The HD1 is easily the best looking DAP ever made, makes my old HD5 looks like a childish gameboy. And the magnesium is super light compared to the HD5's aluminum, and I find it stronger as well (HD5 could dent easier). It also feels great in the hand, very smooth and durable. The unit is setup perfect for right hand usage. The screen is clear in dark and daylight, and the reversable green monochrome display looks excellent (I prefer green text on black background).5/5 Size/Weight: Speaks for itself, to date it's still the smallest and lightest 20GB player ever made, period. Under 3.9oz is amazing, especially since my HD5 was (what seems hefty now) 4.8oz. 5/5 Sound Quality: Great, sounds right in line from what I remember with my HD5. V-Sur effects are also cool too (I love arena mode), and customizable EQ is fantastic. All my songs are encoded in HiLP (ATRAC3plus 64kbps) and sound great. And line out is a must for me (I hook my player up to portable speakers alot) and it's great to have that option, line out sounds so crisp and clear compared to standard headphone jacks that must be used for other DAPs out there. 5/5 Battery Life: Fantastic, 30 hrs is top of the industry. Sony always gets it right here, although I may miss not having a removable battery of the hd5, but having a charging cradle is awesome! I think that is a huge plus. Long lasting battery life and a beautiful charging cradle to boot, something I really wanted with my hd5. 5/5 User Interface: The HD1 is a breeze to use and navigate. However, if you have Track Shuffle enabled, then decide to search by Artist, it will only shuffle tracks from that Artist (not all tracks as the track shuffle mode should be doing) and that could get annoying. To fix it, you must go back into the menu and change shuffle to unit shuffle, then back to track shuffle each time you want to shuffle all tracks after choosing a song through Artist Mode, this can get frustrating. 4/5 Overall Pros - FANTASTIC Build Quality/Look - Smallest and Lightest - Charging Cradle - Long Battery Life - Great Sound Quality - V-Sur effects - Customizable EQ - Line Out - Screen - Easy UI Navigation Overall Cons - Shuffle mode bugs - Tracks not automatically alphabetized after transfer (hd5 did this) - Non removable battery Overall I'm very satisfied. I do miss the shuffle mode of the HD5 and how it automatically alphabetized my tracks, but besides that it's a great unit. And other pros that the HD5 didn't have really make it worth it (sexier brushed metal look, charging cradle, etc.) I give it a 9.5/10.

I posted this in another thread, but got no replies, so decided to make a new thread on it. On all of my units (hd1, rh10, 600D), after transfering songs, I try to put all the songs in ABC order manually. I just added 6 new songs today to my HD1. All the others are already alphabetized (set sonicstage to do that before transfer), but the new ones just become the last 6 tracks on the player. I can easily drag them to where they should be, however, when I try to drag them it takes FOREVER to drag it to wear I want it. Trying to get a song that starts with B from the end of a 500 song list to the top takes a few minutes, for just one song. There must be a quicker way to do this, anyone have a clue how to easily drag/place the song where I want?

Currently listening to The All-American Rejects on my NW-HD1.

That makes a little more sense, odd that it only edits the MP3 file. One more question on Sonicstage, I've also been wondering this for awhile On all of my units (hd1, rh10, 600D), after transfering songs, I try to put all the songs in ABC order manually. I just added 6 new songs today to my HD1. All the others are already alphabetized (set sonicstage to do that before transfer), but the new ones just become the last 6 tracks on the player. That's no good. What I like to do is go search through Artist Mode to find a paticular track (not all tracks by that artist), then let it continue to shuffle all songs. Why is there both track and unit shuffle if they just do the same thing? Seems odd to me, there must be a way to shuffle all tracks after picking a song in artist mode.
-
BUMP Can anyone help me on question 2? I really want to know even though I edited the tracks in sonicstage, it still transfers them with old artist/album names.
-
I've got a problem, hopefully someone can help me here. After pressing MODE it brings me to the ARTIST mode to search by artist, which is what I prefer to use to find my favorite tracks. However, after picking a song from ARTIST mode, then I went into MENU and turned on TRACK SHUFFLE, to shuffle all of my tracks. But, it only shuffles the tracks from the Artist of the song I selected via ARTIST mode. I then tried UNIT SHUFFLE but it did the same exact thing. I then switched to GROUP mode, and then it shuffled all tracks in TRACK SHUFFLE. Problem: How do I get ALL TRACKS to shuffle from the ARTIST Mode. Thanks for any replies, this is the only problem I'm having. After solving this, the HD1 will be perfect.

Well that makes me feel better, lol, I thought it was some defect. edit - Does anyone know how to safely remove this recycle sticker?
-
My HD1 has arrived! Wow is she a beauty! It's charging now, will transfer songs over to it when it's done. Looks great at first sight except that "please recycle" sticker on the back, tried to remove it but it won't come off, no biggy though. Oddly enough the player kind of looks "dirty" on some spots, like a little bit of dirt or something was worn into it, as there are some very light gray spots on parts of it. Probably just developed over time from being in the new sealed box for so long, but otherwise, it looks fantastic!

Wow that's weird how it just grabs the ATRAC file but shows the MP3 file. I'll probably just leave it alone, no need to go through manually deleting and moving my mp3s, etc. And yes I'm using sonicstage 4.2 CP. Just yesterday I was transfering with my MZ-RH10, but I believe it happened with my NW-HD5 also before it got stolen.
-
1. I don't want to delete my original mp3's, I have all my mp3s stored in a dedicated mp3 file folder on my desktop. I just don't want them in my sonicstage library, I want my transcoded ATRAC files in my library. 2. I adjusted them in all tracks view and album view, doesn't make any difference, they still transfer as if they were unedited. What track properties are you referring too?
-
I've been really curious of this lately, hopefully someone can shed some insight on the subject. 1. I currently have my entire library (474 tracks) in Sonicstage, all of which have already been converted to ATRAC3plus @ 64kbps. However, in sonicstage under the "format" column where all the tracks are listed, it still lists them as "MP3" even though when I transfer then to a player it reads "ATRAC3plus Hi-LP." I have the transfer mode specified at 64kbps so they always stay that way, but no conversion takes place as they transfer as I have already previously converted all the tracks to ATRAC3plus 64kbps. What is weird is, it still reads MP3 in my library. How do I get my library to show all my ATRAC3plus converted files and not the original mp3s? I find it strange that during transfer, it does transfer the correct ATRAC3plus 64kbps file, but doesn't actually show the file in that format in sonicstage. I've even tried batch converting all the mp3s in sonicstage again to ATRAC3plus 64kbps again, took an hr, then afterwards it says all songs have been converted, but in my library it still just displays the mp3s and not the ATRAC files (which is what I want to see in my library). 2. On some of my songs (older ones for the most part), no matter what I edit in sonicstage for the Album Name or Artist Name, it transfers the song to the DAP the same way it was before I edited it. In Sonicstage, a song may read "My Happy Ending - avril lavigne - under my skin" for Track Name - Artist - Album, then I edit the song in my library to read "My Happy Ending - Avril Lavigne - Music Files". However, when transfering the song, the original artist name and album name appear on the DAP instead of the edited file in sonicstage. Anyone know why this happens? I end up having to change the ID tags for album name and artist name on the transfered screen of the player itself to fix it for every song that this happens to. I'd love for sonicstage to use the ID tags that I changed in My Library for all songs, not sure why it doesn't, if anyone knows how, please post. However, if I edit the Track Name, that appears changed after transfering it to the DAP know matter what song it is. Thanks in advanced for any replies, this is quite frustrating at times.

I understand that, and completely agree with you that the sony's made in japan DAPs are much better constructed than the ones made in Malaysia, but that doesn't change the fact that this is a very old player which only holds 512MB.
