  1. this is exacty what i do in by bedroom set-up; i use my Hi-MD900 into the AUx-in of a CD/DVD stereo unit.. sounds really really great.. i am a former pro-musician & just retires DJ and concider myself an expert in how music sounds; and this sound great.. i don't NEED and fire tuned digital tweeks or freaks; seeks just good sounding music.. i keep one of my 5 Hi-MD disks there; and rotate it every so ofter; but try to keep the mellower stuff there like My like with thrill kill cult; lol'ss when company comes over; i like to put my other Hi-MD900 on the living room (Bigger) set-up ; and flaunt it's internal twangs.. like i like to go into the menue and "Speed-up" all the songs just a hair to give them more life; and the ppl are amamzed.. i make sure that they underdstand this is NOT an MP3 player.. and of course; i LOVE my sweakin "line-out" on the HI-MD; sometimes i take it on a DJ job for special songs i prepare for certain parties.. my advide to yous is; keep the unit closer the the couch so as to be able to change the songs at will; it doesn't have to be at the stereo. i myself (rayzray) use the remote which i keep under the pillow with all my other nightly needs. rant end
  2. listening to Ambient/Trp-Hop/Electronica on a DVD-R i made;;and am transferring some of the songs to an MD-Deck via "analogue"; but one of these days; i have a feeling i can transfer "digital" cause of the way i "Trap" the music.
  3. i am so afraid of asking this question about my latest LOVE; DVD'ing and MP4'ing.. so i won't; for now. to re-answer the on-topic question: it's a tie;; a draw; a tit-tat.. i have 5 DVD-Ram Recorders now and 10 DVD Players; most Ram-readers. using them for my A/V projects BUT, also for "Personal Music". what a surprise. do i want another Hi-MD recorder or another DVD Recorder; could use one of each; but i think the scale is leaning towards anothe DVD-RAM Recorder for my "up-coming A/V Field set-up; who needs a computer on the field; i need more bling blings; i need to "Take it on the road".!
  4. did you see my post that they moved to the (Technical, Tips & Tricks) forum about Radio Shack selling optical & VIdeo cables dirt cheap? all you have to do is separate them and you got yourself a 6 foot optical cable for about $4.00 USD. (http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=14660) i guess they are discontinuing their optical stuff. oh, i bought two more 3 footers today.
  5. listening to Celtic Music (Celtic - Whispers); *my "X" wanted me to copy it for her; and of course, one for moi aussii (sp)*
  6. i always remaster my CD's at -4db to -2db (analogue) so as to give me headroom for blasting the audience with my 1000 watt; two 18" full range speakers.. i can't stand digital copies that clip on me cause they did it wrong.. oe the program varied. *i am sooooo perfect.*
  7. "Little People" from a Sat morning Dance Recital i had to go to; (what a challange to re-mix this into an A/V extravaganza. i admire all you "Classicalpiles"; if only Chet Adkins and Elvis wudda left the guitar alone and the present day rock wudda been classical-variations; and not a lotta noise. *as i plan to listen to Rush, next*.
  8. my interpritation of the first post was that he was looking for a format to save/archive his material; no matter what portable unit he used to capture it. he had mentioned he used to transfer it to cassettes; i assume to save it. so, that's why i mentioned DVD ;; for to save and archive. he was looking for another format; not of the MD type;; but another. Hi-MD is probably good for the moment. a lot of money spent for just temorary though. DVD will be here for a while; lol's; blue-ray may have it's day;say when? at least he is getting a lot of info;for to sort out; imagine if Shakespere wudda had a Hi-MD; or even a VCR!! i myself am using my Hi_MD900's a lot less as time goes by; some of it for to save their lives; and most of it is because DVD'ing is just a lot more funner. i'd say i'm 30% right and youre 31 % right; and the real answer lies in CHina/Japan.
  9. hi Lo Volta, thanks for the intro: i myself have two Hi-MD900's and bought them for that reason; UNTIL i realized that theyr were not here to stay; and i have to use the Sony Baloney software. so i just use and enjoy them for "Listening" .. He (tony p ) did say he was looking for something else cause Net MD was not here to stay. so i avoided the Hi-MD cause they are not here to stay and need the sony software;; unless you do PCM in real time; i think. i LOVE my Hi-MD 900's, but they feel and look like they are ready to break at any moment; where-as a DVD Deck is more durable; and replaceable real cheap. but, i do bow to your ppost on Hi-MD's ; they are another avenue to storage. i wudda loved to use just the 900's instead; but sony just won't make the MD/Hi-MD experience (user friendly). sony is like an old hen; IMO. *AND WONLT RELEASE A HI-MD DECK!!!!*
  10. i have started saving music onto DVD in the XP mode; which is PCM lossless. i even use the SP Mode on music i don't really care about (2 hrs of stereo).. i have 27 MD-DEcks and anticipate them dying someday; so my choice right now is the DVD way. you method to cassette is not the greatest choice; but if it works for you ; do it. this WAV crap in PC to me is just a wast of time; until your PC crashes or something like that. it's like a aquerril burrying his nuts and can't find them later???? i am only ranting on MY way of saving music at this point; music is my life and always has been. i go for the gutt feeling and leave "Tech" out of it. there are other PCM units out there; but expensive; and you can buy a DVD recorder-deck with those RAM dvd's for about $150 USD; which to me is a good investment. (and they also record on regular DVD-r's and RW's). research the (+'s) and (-'s) first and don't get stuck with the wrong recorder. and;; if one of my many friends; (all two of them) wants a copy; i just burn them one without the SONY BALONEY involved and all the transfer headaches sony invents and spies on us. oh, any don't get the SONY DVD recorder; get the Panasonic with the RAM DVD's included. (late edit) oh, i forgot to tell you that i also save music on CD-R's; especially all my DJ'ing MD's are backed up to CD-R ) ((DJ music in Mono, and personal music in stereo)); but am slowly transferring to DVD.
  11. my two cents is that in those cases; i just re-record in (Analogue) through an equalizer and boost up the volume;; and tweeking the bass and treble etc;; and sometimes pass it through my Boss Effects processor to get some "ambience".. Analogue can be a GOOD thing.. and, i am not putting down anyones method of transfers; just adding another posibility. it's all in the "Ears" in the long run;; and how it sounds through your various listening situations; like big stereo systhem; or ear buds from a portable unit; etc.. everyone is here to learn in a way; i say digital recording can be bad sometimes and analogue can be good sometimes;; or as i (rayzray ) do/does; i "Do" both. as much as i hate mp-3's; i admire the mass of ppl that swear by it; and so-be-it; the saga continues.
  12. i have a "nack/knack" for always buying what's best;; and i have so many MD's and hi-MD;; gee where is da MP-twee in my house;; nowheres; cause it's NOT the best; but ok for the rest. i guess!
  13. listening to my original version (vinyl LP) of The Who's "Live at Leeds" (1970); no letters; folders; papers; envelopes - just six songs *as i eat my cheerios*. (the ground is broken somewheres to my turntable; gggggrrrrr!)
  14. IMO; Optical (digital) has a LOT of limitations and negatives. i use it spareingly; and prefer analogue; it's like an artist painting with shades. digital is too "Fake; wait; make it "Hate". yes; in my studio i use at least ONE analoge to thither up the edges. if this is OT; then i'll come back and change my opinion.
  15. Radio Shack has been selling their (Fiber Optic Toslink A/V Dubbing Cables/ Gold Series) (#15-1592) DIRT CHEAP;; like the 6 foot ones for $3.97 (USD);; and the 3 foot ones for a dollar less.. i have been buying them up every day;; as many as i can get. i (Rayzray) separate the optical part of the cable and the video part and use them separately. it's like stealing candy from a baby, but, the baby cant bite back. i must have bout about 20 of them so far, and will use them to replace many of my studio optical cables;; and the video parts of the cables will go to my Video projects (cause i use onle the video and not the sound. it's also like pirating mucho music which i have mastered; matter of fact; i have mastered about everyting i will every have to know. end of rant.
  16. we all said that when we bought our FIRST unit; and many many units after; we say we will never buy another one; LOL's!
  17. thaks (culp4684); nice to be here in a semi-cosmic state; i am paranoid over battery life and over extended backlights. and i own soo many units; and with an old dementured memory, i can't remember what unit does what; i actually have to carry a bunch or "Manuals" in my back-pack; sack no good, would use fanny pack; stack can't be made though.
  18. i just bought a (SIMA SFX-9 Video Effects Mixer) to augment my massive MD-Hi-MD audio studio;; and convert it into a semi massive A/V hang-out. am now collecting music on DVD-RAM's; DVD-R's & RW's and at 4 hours a shot with visuals. (instead of my usual 800 MD's and 27 MD Decks). sometimes i just add a little "Ocean" or "Fireplace" into the original video scene; sometimes naught; bought three portable DVD players to monitor; awesome thing goin on here; too bad i am all alone!
  19. yes; and you can always pull the portable unit apart and build it into an old Deck casing and call it a Hi-MD deck. some big ppl in this world do it all the time.
  20. i want one; even though i hate Sony; i'll just scratch off the "y".! it would make a great field audio recorder to suppliment my cam cording/video editing rampage!
  21. listening to Delerium "Chimera" - i am really really starting to like this band a lot. they have made the "Big League" - i put them in my (Bedside Hi-MD900. oh, and love Mingus and Coltrane; i've got plenty of them, mostly original Vinyl LP's. good taste guys. (Up-Date) mucho time later; listening to massive "Electronica" ; Veronica wold be proud of me.)
  22. it IS very pretty;; and you answered your own question; about how to use the unit. it's exactly what i (rayzray) do/does. i use one unit to save the legnth of the life of another unit. i have the slave units and the king units. so, use the black 900 to "Download" all the time; and keep it there permanently;; thus, saving the other unit. and i have a gutt feeling that these units 9including mine) can easily be fixed by my Chineese repairman here; but why whould we;? we have everything under control. another unit may cross your path; and for the right price; maybe that one will work better. by the way;; you say the unit will not stop; but can you just program it; or just play on "Favorite" mode. there must be a way. to make you feel better;; the problem with one of my 900's IS the Stop Button; but i use it at my bedside ONLY and with the remote. if you whine (sp) as much as i do over these things; maybe your wife will release some "dough" towards a new unit; like my wife can't stand my whining (sp); almost as much as she can';t stand my spelling/typing. and yes; it IS Beautiful. (::!!) oh; PS; just a thought; if you have the AC/DC adapter plugged in while you are using thie BLack unit; it may be in the "Charging" mode; or stuck there. what is it; if you press stop twice, it starts charging; but, is that only if it is on the cradle? i am so confused.!
  23. well, i think you have learned a lesson; color never matters. my advice to you is get the most out of your unit; turn it into a basic player or (audio_ slave); and get another new unit. my studio is chuck full of half-broken units that have significant jobs; act as intermedialte converters; and life goes on in my world. perhaps , put it permantently next to your bed and have a few HiMD discs specifically for falling to sleep with. myself; i plan to convert my van's music system to a DVD player > into my big a*s boom box; and be happy the rest of my life. (::!!)
  24. i do have the larger remote and can't find my instruction book; but anyways; unless you have a warranty; you are up the creek. there is a Chineese electronic repair man here in RI that claims he can fix these units; he says he has connections in china;; lol; but i belive him. the cost thought would be close to "maybe don't do it". in my case; i love my 900's sooooo much; i wuold pay a large amount to keep them going; cause i don't trust the 2nd generation Hi-MD units; nor Sony. i have switched to buying everything but Sony. i , myself would NEVER buy any electronic unit used;; ive been burned too many times. even the Sony Referbished stores suck;; i got burned there 3 times. moral of the story; buy new; get warrantee; and buy a lot of units. (give up smoking if you have to; or drinking; or in the case of my piano students; i tell them give up you cell phone for 3 months and you can buy any electronic unit you want. (::!!)
  25. i have two 900's; and one has this problem; the other works well. i just use the deluxe remote and am happy with it this way. i live near a SONY "Field Office" that handles these problems; next time i go by there i may stop in and ask what to do. one of the guys that works there is a musician that worked the same clubs as me; and we rant about the "Old" days. i may be able to pry some useful info for you. but, i think they are (On-to-me).
