Now you can smell like Minidisc. (Whatever that may mean. ) 6257650466

It's best not to use the words 'logic' and 'Sony' in one sentence. I guess Sony did this with the intention of preventing people from making digital copies of copyrighted music. What they failed to recognise is that there are far easier ways of copying music (simply ripping cd's on your pc, for instance), and that they were shooting themselves in the foot with this (or better: Sony Entertainment was shooting Sony Electronics in the foot). However, diminishing profits now seem to make them re-evaluate all this, and they are opening up the minidisc format.

If you need both upload and download then you have no other possibility than to go with Hi-MD. Net-MD doesn't allow uploading your recordings to your computer through USB.
-
Just the opposite. Remember, the RH10 is a 'better' unit than the RH910, just as the NH1 is considered the top of the first generation, a step up from the NH900.

Someone else already suggested this in another topic, but why don't you use bittorrent to release it? At least for the first week or two, to get the bulk of the downloads out of the way. After that you can just offer it for download through this site, like you're doing now. Should reduce load on the server significantly, I would guess.

I'm pissed off because my MZ-NH900 got stolen. I had taken it back to the store, to get it repaired, again (the infamous malfunctioning stop-button; see this topic). I received an email yesterday that there has been a burglary earlier this week and their entire stock got taken, including my NH900. Firstly, I'm pissed just because of the fact that it's gone. Secondly, I'm pissed because they took so long to get it repaired. I had returned it on January 13th, and hadn't heard anything until February 21st, when I received an email saying that it had arrived at their distribution center and they would further process it from there (i.e. send it to Sony repair centre, I guess). And now this last email, from which I conclude that Sony had returned it to them, but they hadn't notified me yet that I could pick it up (what are the odds on this burglary just happening at this moment; if they would've just phoned me immediately to say it was back, I would have gone and picked it up the same day...) Thirdly, I'm pissed because this means the search for a new unit will have to start again (luckily I will get a full refund). It took me a long time last year to decide on the NH900, and even longer to find one for a reasonable price in a shop nearby. Now I will have to face all those questions again: do I really need legacy recording modes? Can I accept the crappier non-LCD remotes that come with the 2nd gen. units? What unit looks the best? How much money am I willing to spend? Do I really trust that webshop that sells for an incredibly low price, or do I pay an arm and a leg at a brick and mortar store, just to be able to easily return it for repairs or something? Do I wait a couple of weeks/months, to see if Sony announces any third generation Hi-MD units? Well, I'm done ranting for now and will start searching the web again, for the best available deals. (As you can see from this lengthy post, I don't have much experience with things getting stolen from me. It infuriates me. I actually can't remember ever having anything stolen, not even my bike, which is pretty unique, considering I live in the Netherlands.)

No, it doesn't contradict what The Low Volta said. He and Qwakrz are talking about two seperate steps on the ripping process. Qwakrz is talking about taking a wav file, compressing it with a lossless codec and then decompressing it. The resulting file will be identical to the original wav. Volta is talking about creating this original wav file from a track on a cd. He states that using EAC will give you a wav that better resembles the track on cd than other ripping software does.

This is old news. Annoying nonetheless, but old news.

Optical connections haven't gone, but you mentioned optical out, which hasn't been available on any Sony portable MD, apart from the very first MZ-1. However, many models (not all) do have an optical in.

The signal coming from a mic isn't strong enough to be used through line-in. You'll need something to amplify it.
-
Just to be complete and save you from another deception, even with a Hi-MD recorder, you won't be able to get the recordings you made with the MZ-S1 to your PC through USB. It only allows uploading of recordings made on a Hi-MD machine. So it will work with any new recordings you will make, but those old ones can only be done through so called real-time uploading (dubbing, re-recording, whatever you want to call it).

Could you post a screenshot of the 'digital in' tab? VIA has a guide to this Vinyl control panel (here), but they, quite cunningly, skip over the 'digital in' tab.

I get a bit annoyed when I hear something like this. He probably wasn't so pissed with Sony when he signed a (most likely) multi-million dollar deal with them. Obviously, that money has to be earned back, preferably with a bit of a profit. He signed that deal himself, so don't start complaining about the consequences afterwards.

My guess is that it's a color designation. Is your unit BLack or BLue and the other one Silver?

You'd think someone selling stuff on eBay would make a little effort to clean it up.

You mean MZ-NH900.

KrazyIvan's Panasonic SJ-MJ50 Pictorial

I think so, too. Although that doesn't include shipping and I have to buy that plug converter, but still. For anyone interested, it seems like this seller still has quite a number of them left. It says they only ship to the UK, but just ask beforehand and they may be willing to send it to other countries. I did and it was no problem to ship it to the Netherlands. Panasonic SJ-MJ50 on eBay Thanks, I'm quite sure I will. -

Your nice pictorial inspired me to buy this unit. I found it on eBay for £25, brand new. I received it this morning and am loving it. It's the first player-only I see in real-life and I'm still amazed at how small it is. I was kind of deceived by the close-up pictures you have taken, and had expected it to be a bit bigger, but it's just wonderful. Now I just have to get me a plug converter for the UK style plug on the AC adapter, so I can charge the battery and use it without the AA-battery attachment. -
I'm not sure if this will work, but it's worth a try. When selecting the songs to transfer, first select the last song of the group, hold shift and then select the first song. I think this happens because, when you select the group 'normally' (first select the first song, hold shift, select the last song) the last song sort of becomes the 'active' one and gets transferred before the others, because it's the most recent one you selected, and only then does the rest of the selected group gets transferred in it's normal order. (I hope you understand what I'm babbling about.)
-
Maybe a loose contact on your battery? Does it also happen when you have the AC adapter plugged in to the device?

I'm not so sure about this. I don't know any specifics of this law, but I'm guessing it is only illegal for companies to sell music players with an output that is above the limit. I don't think it is illegal for an individual to own such a device, otherwise I would be breaking the law just by already owning an older md-player, from the time before this law went into effect.

I have no experience with head cleaning discs, but have a look at this recent thread: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=13728

Have a Hi-MD question that doesn't need a thread? [part III]
eriktous replied to Christopher's topic in Minidisc
It's 1984. If Sony decides you don't need to upload to mac, you won't upload to mac (unless you let them suck some more blood, err... money out of you).
