Take a scrap USB cable and a Multimeter (digital prefered ) and strip the sheathing off of it about an inch and a Half worth , expose the four wires and sheild Then set the meter to Ohms , Pins 1 and 4 will be the outside two find which wires go to those pins and cutback the other two , you can also cut the sheild back . I keep one of these around , to ckeck these USB adapters to see what is actuall going on . Try using a standard USB cable to the RH1 instead of the adapter as well , ( I have a suspicion that might be part of the problem )

AHH ppc , ok , well if you want optical in/out , the M-Audio Transit , USB sound Module is great , and works with Mac , the driver is also Univeral Binary and has adjustable gain over a pretty wide range , Input Gain as well as Out I have one just to take with me if I have to use someone elses computer for live stuff, but I have used it on The Macbook Pro , and it sounds very good. http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Transit-main.html

That means the output current is 350 ma or less on the USB , the RH1 needs at least 500 ma I have a 2AA pack to USB that has a Voltage multiplier in it .and it will run the RH1 for about 6 hours with two SANYO 2700 ma NMH batteries. but the output current clocks at 400 ma , when it drops below that the RH1 shuts down , while running the OLED is kind of dim , so it isnt getting all of what it needs . I have another 4 AA to USB pack that is 1 amp out and it charges just fine but it gets used up pretty quick , I get 4.5 hours out of it because the RH1 reads it as a Power source and thus uses it wide open .

Leopard would be nice but .... I think I would be happy with just iLife 08 , Leopard Is also going to be a little more proccessor heavy . iLife 08 will give a lot of the features of Leopard without having to actually Upgrade your system . I would stick with OSX Tiger at it's highest update . Especially if you arent having any problems with it now.

I dont mind using iTunes , for Playing media and organising . Also I have it integrated with DIVX , so that when I use the Front Row ( with Apple Remote) I can watch Divx movies , Concerts , whatever ( almost 300 gb worth at the moment ) . But as for Downloading from iTunes store , I will not be buying ANYTHING from them again , the sound was horrible. I agree with the second hand CD thing , that makes it fun , the challenge of finding it . As for the iPod , I entertained the thought on the new classic , but have decided against it , the sound issue remains , I have read the reviews , the Alternative I am looking at is the Cowon D2 , it has SD slot , and 4 gb , touch screen interface etc, but what has my attention is the file formats it WILL play , the fact that it works with the Mac as an external drive , so no software required , and the 95 db S/N that is pretty nice . iTunes is fine for organisation , but that will be all I use it for , and Poadcasts.

I guess that would depend on what quality you want them at . You can easily go with higher quality less songs , CDr's are cheap , and CD folders arent far behind.

If the Headphone Jack is White ,it is an Optical Combo jack , The "Din Unlock" means "No Signal " which means itregistered the optical , but nothing was coming out , Do it again just the same way you did before Optical and set the MD the same way and hit plt on the computer , I think you were in Sync Mode . In Sync mode the recorder wont start untill there is a signal at the optical read buffer. just to check , Plug the Toslink cable in to the mac , play the file and see if the other end of the cable is glowing red , if it is you have Optical out .

It charges my RH1 just fine , actually better than others I have used , it has the proper pin out and setup for the charging the MD so it should work.

On a PC connect there is a resistance between pins 2 & 3 of the USB , That tells the MD it is connected to the PC , A lot of USB adapters for power , have only Pins 1 & 4 connected + / - so what you need is the Sony 12 volt to USB adapter , I have one and it works perfectly . Just google "mp3 recorder" "stereo Recording" ( which doesnt mean the same thing anymore, in the Tech of my day Stereo Recording Meant recording from your stereo ..... go figure) There are Hard drive based MP3/Wav recorders , Flash Besed , CF Card Based, Microdrive based ,..... Selectable formats ,Bit rates, Sample Rates in fact a Lot of just basic MP3 Players have Line input now, for Recording

It depends on what Mac he has , the soundcard in most modern Macs is 32 bit float 96khz . The headphone out is practically pristine. It also doubles as an Optcal Output , so if his is the Combo out , he could use the Toslink cable , that is what I do on my Macbook Pro . He doesnt need and extra soundcard . You need to go listen to a Mac . It isnt the Macs that sound bad , it is the iPods . Most Audio Studios , and Video production facilities , are ........... ALL on Macs

Hey vore , on the RH1 you record in HILP mode , it gives you 34 hours on 1 disc using a HiMD disc , on an 80 min Disc you get 9 + Hours , I record from the internet AOL Radio , and iTunes Radio then pop the discs in my HIMD player for when I am out , So i can umm ,..... Listen to the radio . ( gos that sounds like a line from Steely Dan " I'M reading Last years papers ..... although I dont know why...... assassins , con's and rapers .......might as well dieeeee ee ee eeiiiiiiiii )

The Bookshelf systems wont be very expensive either , probably under 300 dollars . or pretty close to it . we will see . What a shame they didnt put HiMD on them eh ? I mean their competition ( I use the term loosely) comes out with HiMD decks before they do . Could that in itself be a Glimmer of hope . Will Sharp or Onkyo come out with a HiMD portable , they have it in the home system ......... Maybe , just maybe .
