  1. The Important intsructions included this little tidbit. "Audio tracks purchased from music distribution services on the Internet cannot be converted to MP3 format. When converting ATRAC files to MP3 files, the ATRAC files are not automatically deleted. There is a user selectable option in the conversion tool to delete the ATRAC files after conversion. OpenMG™ Secure Module must be installed in your computer. If OpenMG Secure Module is not installed on your computer, an error message will be displayed instructing you to install the latest version of SonicStage® software. Click here to download SonicStage version 4.3. To ensure that no other program interferes with this utility, save all work and close all other programs. The Taskbar should be clear of applications before proceeding. It is highly recommended to print out these instructions as a reference." Highlight the fact that your ATRAC file you Payed for connot be converted. My suggestion would be to record everything from the line out ,salvage everything you can , in a NON DRMed format . a real pain in the @$$ but the only truly safe way to save all of the stuff youve got.
  2. Damn , I was really hoping to be the first to review it , but mine hasnt gotten here yet , AND I AM IN JAPAN < what the heck man , oh well
  3. Agreed Josie and her Pussycats might argue with that , ........
  4. A fellow musician , and ... without a pic posted we would have to reserve judgement on the Gorgeous thing , .... but with 2 Rackmount Sony's , and an editing station ( an example of MD being used as intended ,instead of some jogger beating the crap out of it) we CAN infer intelligence , hmmm interesting . Yes I like that big screen as well , easy to see . One of the things that make this unit hard to find , is that a lot of the components that are in it are the same components as the R50 , which is the Legend . Most Recording people who are into MD and steady users , as well as repair guys will all testify to that about the R50 . That was the Best one ever made, Quality ,durability, Audio quality , Mic preamp, . The 5ST Has alot of the same components in it . Here is the info for the 5ST http://minidisc.org/part_Sony_MZ-R5ST.html I get the feeling your not that defenseless, lol. Welcome to the MDCF , stick around and see what happens . By the way what are the symptoms of the one that "Broke" I know that the contacts of the docking station and the unit can get a little tarnished after a while or worn and that will cause it not to charge , or read discs, also starts skipping , a lot of funky things happen ( Mine did ) But after cleaning those contacts , purrs like a kitten. so if your experienceing those oddities maybe I can help by posting a pictorial step by step , to salvage the one you have first, and if that doesnt work , we can try to find another one.
  5. Storm ,... that is a Smashingly good idea , from all the troubles I have read this is one of the particulates that keep getting in peoples eyes. I am not a programmer but issues like this makes me wish I was.
  6. It would entirely depend on how interesting the reason is for wanting THAT particular model is , before I would entertain selling mine . So , Just exactly why THAT model , and not the R50 , or the 4ST ....... How much are you willing to give , and who covers shipping etc . Make it good now! there is an R50 in Australia at the moment http://cgi.ebay.com/SONY-PORTABLE-MINIDISC...1QQcmdZViewItem
  7. I should be receiving my H2 sometime this week or next , I will post a basic review of what I think of the machine Vs MD so if you wish you can wait for the review of an Audio Engineer , (that would be me) or the reviews of stores the just want to sell something .(My h2 has been on reserve since it was announced) The premps I listed are of Audiophile quality most battery powered and will give pro results . Especially with the MD
  8. You would need a preamp , No the Mic would not have enough output . http://www.rolls.com/products/mp13.php ( mono not stereo , so you would need to have a little adapter for Mono to Stereo ) http://www.rolls.com/products/mx34.php ( Stereo , with 1/8 " in's and outs for MD ) (I want this one myself but there arent any Rolls dealers here) http://www.rolls.com/products/mx54.php ( Used to have the previous version of this one , very usefull ) http://www.rolls.com/products/mx56.php ( this one would be for singing along with a CD or something else , your MD can be connected to the Phone output CD Player, Piano , Radio etc to the back )
  9. Lets see if I can explain the "Jump" for you recording meters , are showing in Decibels a relative sound level of a given VOLTAGE ,..... yes kiddies we are dealing with energy. But to measure it in Voltage you need to do a bunch of math to know exactly what your looking at . Decibel or 1/10 of a Bel The 12 DB mark on the meter represents from about - 65db up to -12db whereas the -12db mark going up will from-12 up to 0 db . exponential meter ........... This is the reason for 70 mm to 120 mm long faders on a mixing board , is so there is that extra room for precise control up in the top end of the recording levels , and to control the "Headroom" you just have to develop a sense of where your at , in the 12db->0db realm to get the bigger dynamics , and just how far you can push it without getting out of control . Rock Concerts you will have one level , Classical though will sometimes have very large Dynamcs where you are recording a very delicate part and then BOOM ..... so knowing the piece , and know your metering , when the BOOM part is coming , a very quick smooth 4db down with a return right before the next stage of sound =( this is what a Limiter does for you in Microseconds) ( do not confuse Limiter with AGC ,the AGC built in to the MD is only for quieter sound sources or very steady loud sounds that do not have a large dynamic range ) this is why I try to explain to people , you wont get truly Pro Recordings on the Fly with the MD ... Close , very close , but not Pro , .. for that level more defined control is needed , When you listen to a lot of the bootlegs of the 70's such as Greatful Dead , or Little Feat , etc and the sound quality of those bootlegs just floors you , it is because the were done on TRULY Pro gear . the TCD D5M Cassette Deck ( Yes I said Cassette) but the deck has a very nice LIMIter built in to cap high levels without affecting overall gain , and very good S/N ratio's and Killer Freq response for a Deck . This is the one thing missing from te RH1 to make it PERFECT is a Brick Wall limiter , if in the Menus you had the choice between AGC or Limiter then this would be the perfect machine . I have recorde the explosiveness of Taiko Drums with the RH1 ,... No prob , but I have to set Mic sens Low , and Rec levels low enough to get Peak control , but when the quiet parts come I have to be able to raise the levels quickly and carefully to still have good dynamics and the sounds of the Audience , But as soon as the Big stuff comes back in very carefully and quickly drop the levels to exactly where they were before . After that , do some editing in the Computer to smooth out th rough spots , My first Taiko post which is somewhere on the Forum DOES NOT represent what I am talking about here , I did that when I first got my RH1 and still wasnt use to it . Just a tidbit for you .
  10. Here is the Website http://www.youdoitelectronics.com/
  11. That is a Sonic Stage issue , With Macintosh you use MD Transfer 2.0 and anything imported comes in as a .wav file , (Larger files yes , but completely transferable to editing software ) and immediately convertable to mp3 , ogg, whatever .
  12. Hey 440 , I recorded Crickets last night from the window of my room , using the 40 for control on fade in fade out , I got no noise at all , but I made sure to have the rh1 Hold button engaged so that only the remote is functioning . I have tried other , soundscapes as well , no noise.
  13. Easy way , A small Analouge multi meter , and alligator clips . The reason for the Analouge multi meter is that it has a VU stle and not LED , you need to see the meter move smoothly to accurately know. Connect the black to the sleeve , and the red to the ring of the plug , then use a pair of small ( Ear Buds) headphones connected to a different unit playing something. set the Meter to read DC current or AC Voltage, at a very low setting then move the headphones over the Mike head watching the meter , Move over the top, then the sides , You see witch signal is stronger , you then know which is connected to what.
  14. Watched it just for the heck of , Both a text version and a Flash Version , very cool , I wish there was a way to Download it and put it up here for newbies, that would be very cool , but the Link should be Pinned here and highlighted on the Main page for all newbies.
  15. Welcome to MDCF , the case issue is an ongoing issue , and depend on locale , I live in Japan ,so, gadjet paradise is just around the corner . (literaly) Pics are always welcome , post at your pleasure
  16. Went to Hardoff again today , and sold a few things because I am so broke I cant Pay Attention. And also Left just as broke , .....in the Record section , Yes LP's good ol Vinyl ......Was from 1976 ,.....in Pristine Condition , the Original First pressing , Of ........ Boston's First Albumn , ...... Sitting right behind it was , Boston "Dont Look Back " which is spinning on the turntable as I am typing , and the volume is up SO loud , that I AM ABSOLUTELY sure the neihbours two blocks away can here me . ......YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  17. That would be cool , but I think Tascam is going Flash /HDD /SD Card route It would ne nice tho wouldnt it
  18. I read it on CNN , 17 year old kid , He should be probed for the Sony Software , he could Hack the MD !! ..... Add some reverb , maybe a Limiter instead of AGC . You can smell the fear at ATT , it wont really hurt APple , but ATT would now have competition , which would NOT bode well for them
  19. Well , untill we can get the iMac thing straightened out for you , ..... I know this would be troublesome , but download Audacity , and transfer real time , I will keep trying to help . On my Macbook Pro I dont have any problem with the Rh1 , only if I record Optical in PCM mode then it wont upload , but everything else does You do have to Format the disc to HiMD mode and record in HiMD mode for MD Transfer to list it . So try this , Blank disc into the MD , then Menu-> Option-> Disc Mode = Hi Md , after that , Menu-> Option-> Format -> (Format Disc yes or no ) =Yes The disc should now be in HiMD mode , now record something on it HiSP or HiLP , and then connect it to the Mac
