dex Otaku
Over the years, I've probably spent somewhere on the order of about $2-3,000 on audio equipment. Though I must point out that usually I manage somehow to get other people to buy it -for- me rather than paying for it myself.Half of it is that I like bartering. That other half is that I usually need the equipment to do a job for the person who's paying for it, so it all evens out in the end.

Damage
lol , my compaq cost me almost a grand! a compaq!←Used to be Compaqs made the best dern computer on the block. Nigh crash-proof (We're talking Win3.X days here), built like a brick, but a PITA to upgrade (that reliability came in part due to their highly engineered propritary parts).Back then, it was worth the money, nowadays, why get a Compaq when you can get a eMachine of same caliber for lot less (well, $50-$100)...Less see, Phones set me back about $500 (E3c takes a big chunk)MD Gear ($550)CD Gear ($650, two of them dead)HT Gear ($500)Kachink! And we're not talking about media or cables either.

sony_man
wow, im glad to be reasurred by this. my friends in my neighborhood think their coby and maxel stuff "is da bomb". and they wondered why my ipod was touch sensitive and my d66's were made of wire instead of plastic. im happy that i even know what a forum is (looks up to god and mouths "thank you!"). anyways, as i said before, im hoping to add 250 onto my amount with the ze micro, but i am also considering 2.1 speaker system. aeriyn
Get a pair of decent bookshelf speakers and one of those Sonic Impact Tripath amplifiers, and you'll be set for a decent 2 channel speaker setup.
mrsoul
I guess I will just focus on what I have bought to record live music which was my primary reason for going the MD route.Initial MD purchase:Sharp DR7 (new): $280Sony JE-520 Deck (used off Ebay): $100Blanks and Otterbox for the Sharp DR7: $60Giant Squid Audio cardioid powered mic: $95Upgrade to Sony DX-D400 Deck (after I sold the JE-520 on Ebay): $210 (minus $90 for JE-520)Cheap soundcard with optical input and output: $25 (later sold on Ebay for $10)Creative Audidy ZS2 system (bought because the opitcal input on above card would never work without stutter): $200Sold Sony DX0D400 on Ebay for $220 (made a profit!) and bought theNH900 for $240 (with extra warranty and 2 blanks) since I no longer needed to worry about optical in/out since the USB upload functionality of the Hi-MD took care of all that fun New larger Otterbox and mic stand: $95Shockmount for mic stand: $25AT822 mic: $280Sold Sharp DR7 on Ebay ($180 with old small otterbox)Total (includes what I sold back on Ebay): @ $1100which is still way cheaper than a DAT deck and a micIn the long run, I am very satisfied and happy with the quality of the recordings I have made and I have become a MDfreak in the process.I do also have a MZ-S1 that I take out on walks and to the Y at least 5 times per week: $80 (on clearance at Best Buy, best $80 I have spent in a long time, got me excited about the whole NetMD thing which rolled into the Hi-MD that I was debating on delaying until Sharp produced a model... but here I am and that is my MD investment story)
Syrius
I'd say about 1000-1200. Not counting home theater and gaming goods.

streaml1ne
hmmmm, im looking at these amounts and wondering if we are actually paying this much for the equipment, how long should they last?←I'd expect my HK AVR to last at least 10 years for the amount I paid. Same for the Denon universal player. I have a Pioneer 100W stereo receiver that my dad bought for me 10 years ago that still works. it only cost about $150 new. He's got an old school Onkyo 80 watt high current stereo receiver that's almost 30 years old now. Still runs like a champ. Puts alot of newer stereos to shame too. me
Kenwood Q55 ~ US$200Sony SA1000 ~US$200Some CD player ~US$40Walden D610 dreadnought ~US$300Yanagisawa T50 Tenor sax ~US$1400Yanagisawa 8 metal mouthpiece ~US$26050 Crappy Jpop CDs @ 3059 yen ~US$1500Grand Total is something like US$3900The Kenwood is actually not worth anything. I tried to sell it and I don't think I could get US$50 for it, so now it sits in a box somewhere. To tell you the truth, buying new MD gear is a complete waste of money. Buy something used, you'll still lose money in resale but at least it's not in the triple figures. No one knows about the SA1000 so no doubt they'd lowball me, lets say they're worth about US$75. Used CDs are probably worth about US$7 each, so I would get about US$350 for those. So the market value of this stuff is probably closer to about US$2500. streaml1ne
these numbers are all acumulated over a number of years though right?←About a year and a half or so here. I didn't include any equipment other than the latest incarnation of my stereo/home theater setup. I'm not even done yet. I'm contemplating new Infinity Beta 40's to replace my Primus 250's in the front. Move the Primus set to the rear and free up a pair of bookshelf JBL's. $800 more. Sound is worse than crack I swear. aeriyn
My current equipment was accumulated over a period of about 4 months maybe, but that was relatively fast because I knew what I wanted to get to replace what I already had (which I gathered over about a year).Yes, I've heard of Klipsch, they're not too shabby. I've got my eye on SI Tripath amp + Energy bookshelves though...
