Future of Hi-MD dependant on PS3?

From this article, it sounds like Sony has a lot riding on the PS3 release in 6 months. Maybe this will have an effect on the future of MD...

At the very least, the article may take your mind off of waiting for the RH1 for a few minutes.

I don't know what this article has to do with MD.

Hi-MD was not mentioned in the article. Unless you can store music on a PS3 in ATRAC format. Hi-MD USB connection to the PS3 is still possible. I can stream music from my RH10 to my XBox 360 (MP3, WMA only).

Please reread title of thread.

Sony is currently the only manufacturer of Hi-MD devices. The article states:

"Sony's company-wide effort to drive PS3 sales and defend its home turf comes with a hefty price.

The company says operating profits will tumble 48 percent in the fiscal year to March 2007 as heavy start-up costs for PlayStation 3 push its game division deep into the red."

If PS3 and Blu-ray fail and Sony becomes broke, do you think they are going to put money into R&D for Hi-MD?

Neither do I. I never saw how Hi-MD and UMD were related either (and I've had rather large arguments about this). They aren't related but people still like to relate them anyway

I could buy a 360 and a Wii/Revolution for that money, I think. Sorry Sony. Pass!

You could? But the 360 is only $100 cheaper for it's respective versions, so unless the Wii is going to be less than $100 (and it isn't) then how are you going to manage buying both for the price of a PS3?

Not to mention the fact that you don't get the HD-DVD player with the 360 NOR can the 360 even do 1080p. 360 is a piece of crap. PS3 is going to blow it away.

Exactly. For it's capabilities the PS3 is well worth $100 more than the 360. It's like people completely ignore what these systems do and just look at the absolute price and nothing else. "Oh $600??? Waaay too expensive." Meanwhile the 360 is somehow not "too expensive"?

Technically speaking neither are "too expensive" for the technology involved. Both are being sold at break-even points for the manufacturers. Technically the Wii is probably going to be the most overpriced system because Nintendo might make a profit on its pricetag (though I think they may be heading to break-even, loss-leader territory as the CPU setup is already nearly the same as the 360).

However if we look at what these systems actually do, the 360 becomes the most "overpriced" of the lot. Buying a 360 plus a Wii is first of all not the same price (as I mentiond) and second ofall not really a substitute for a PS3. Even putting both of them together you still don't get to the features of the PS3. But since the PS3 costs the most, it gets slammed for being too pricey somehow

I was talking about a core 360 (USD 299.99). And sorry to burst a bubble, but the PS3 is not that much more powerful than the 360. Kojima himself said that MGS4 can be done on the 360 as well. The core PS3 doesn't have HDMI output, so even if you have one of those expensive TVs that can do 1080P, you need the 600 dollar PS3 to use that feature, if available. Supposing the Wii is 300 dollars too, that's where I'm getting both systems for 600.

Oops yeah the 360 is $300 and $400, for some reason I thought it was $400 and $500. So I guess the PS3 is actually $200 more. Perhaps even more than that at release time if MS drops the price by then.

But just because one game on the PS3 can be ported to the 360 doesn't mean the PS3 isn't more powerful because it is. It also doesn't even take into consider that porting the game might lose features, detail, etc. on the 360. The fact is the PS3 wipes the floor with the 360. It has more processing power and more GPU power as well, IIRC. Whether all that can be capitalised on properly by programmers or whether it makes an appreciable differnce in gameplay, graphics, etc. remains to be seen of course.

About the Core PS3, yeah that is retarded how they stripped all those hardware features. The Core PS3 is looking to be a rip off, particularly since the things they deleted cannot be added or upgraded after the fact. (Not like the Core 360 which can be upgraded to everything the Premium has albeit costing more in the end.)

Not challenging you, but can you provide proof? I have yet to see actual gaming footage from the PS3. At this point, all that processing power has become irrelevant. Is the ease of use and what the programmers can squeeze out of it what matters.
