The Low Volta
minidisc australia used to sell 'em cheapish (especially with the dollar being cheap compared to the euro) through ebay... but it's been a while since I've seen themthere were also a couple of (mostly Chinese) sellers on ebay offering 5-20 packs IIRC, but I really didn't have much faith in those myself (perhaps someone else has good/bad first hand experience with those)check around as well, as I believe there are a couple of threads on the cheapest locations to get 1gb discs from, all around the world
Richard
The best deals are indeed still Minidisc Oz. Bought some yesterday from them:Not multipacks, but excellent value;http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...item=9724821446
atrain
or if you live in australia you go into JB hifi for some slightly cheaper again.
A440
Best price I know of in the U.S.A. is here:http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Rec...ries?sku=244753
jaylen
I'm with A440 on this one (if they can ship to your location). I've ordered from Musician's Friend before. They have a shipping rate of $5.95 for any orders totalling below $50. I got my 1GB MDs in about 3 days. Good e-mail notification and quick, easy service. Recommended. Ok, I sound like a long-winded eBay feedback.
malheuresement
I have bought a 5 pack from discount discs for about £5 per disc, but better than this was the 2 pack "himd blister" from Amazon for £7.95.mal.

There's no mention of a sale-ends date, and there's no listing for a quantity pack. No limit specified on quantity. Also, they mention that this price is a "Guaranteed Lowest Price," up to 45 days after the fact. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me. I bought some, and I don't even have a Hi-MD recorder yet! Anticipating an RH1 as soon as they're out...

They also had the Sony 80min standard MD 5-pack on "sale" for $2.99 not too long ago. Then, all of a sudden (whether due to being sold out or "whatever"), the 5-pack became "out of inventory" and the waiting period was over 30 days. When they finally came back in stock, (about 2 weeks earlier than stated) the price had changed to $8.99. Not that I'm saying that this is a trend over at MF, but it could happen to the 1GB MDs, too, so don't be the one stuck with a long wait (and potentially higher price). There's no limit on how many you can buy, but remember that once your purchase totals over $50, the shipping price will increase a little. Check their shipping policies carefully.
Terence Kelly
The shipping cost is what makes or breaks the deal when buying online. You can get multipacks on e-bay for around $6.oo a disc including shipping. I have had my best luck bidding on one disc at a time. I have paid between $4.25 and $5.75 for a Hi MD blank that way(shipping included).TK

If you buy at least 4 blanks from Musician's Friend, then (taking into account shipping) it comes to US$5.48 per disc. MF charges a flat fee of $5.95 for orders totalling below $50 (so 12 blanks max) and increases by only a few dollars after that. If your total is $99 and over, you get free US shipping. But, my experience is only with blanks, so I'm sure shipping differs per product.I like this option better as you don't have to wait for a 5-day eBay auction to end. I think I know what eBay sellers you're using and they're becoming quite popular, making it hard to keep the auction price below $5. I bought 12 from MF and it came to a final price of $4.49 per disc and took about 2 days to receive shipment.Note: I'm in no way affiliated with Musician's Friend. Justin42
I just received my order for 10 HiMDs from Musician's Friend and am not particularly happy with the packaging-- they just tossed 10 loose discs in a flimsy plastic shipping bag. No packing material or anything (it wasn't even one of those envelopes with bubble wrap on the inside), so who knows what they all went through... I opened one up and it looks ok, but is there any possibility of damage on HiMD discs from being shaken around/unprotected during shipment? (of course they're all tagged "non-returnable" as well)It was a great price but they seem pretty careless about shipping. Has anyone else who ordered from them gotten a shipment like that? Here is a pic of the shipment that I received from Musician's Friend - 12 blanks total. I would call/e-mail them and ask what happened. As you can see, the package that I received was well-packed (there was a top-layer of packing material that I removed for the pic), secure with shipping slip and receipt, and hand-delivered to my door (I can't remember what company they used, but it was along the lines of UPS/DHL/FedEx) in a matter of 2-3 days. Avrin
All of the above prices seem to me like a great sale. Here in Moscow, Russia a HiMD disc sells for $11 (and that only if you can find it, which means turning a Sony Center inside out). A 5-pack sells for exactly $55 (under the same conditions). And a 5-pack of good old 80-minute MDs sells for $9.30 (at the same place). And you have to develop some preternatural sensitivities in order to know when HiMD or MD discs are available at a SC (calling them by phone is of no avail). But then again no one here in Russia takes MDs (including HiMDs) seriously. Until they listen to how these sound.
Justin42
I just got a response from MF. Kind of interesting, blaming Sony (when I doubt Sony shipped them discs in a plastic baggie!):Please accept our apologies. Packaging is done by the manufacturer and products are generally shipped exactly the way that they arrived from the manufacturer. Damaged items are ALWAYS returnable. If any of the discs are not functional, feel free to contact us for a refund/exchange.-- I guess I run some PCM recordings, or fill each disc to the brim a few times on a PC, over the next few days to see what happens... Did you specifically tell them that you are not pleased with the way the entire order was shipped (eg, that it came in a plastic bag, no padding, etc)? I suggest you clearly tell them what you're unhappy about - for example, telling them what you just told us - that Sony would probably not have shipped the discs in a plastic bag and it is Musician Friend's packaging department about whom you are complaining. Explain it to them as if they are mentally challenged and in more detail. I just find it strange how our experiences with this company are so different. I'm not the only one who has ordered from them and this is the first complaint I've seen about them. Good luck.

I got my flimsy envelope of 10 loose disks today, just as you described. No packing materials whatsoever. I don't see any damage on visual inspection. I can't test the discs, though, because I don't yet have a Hi-MD drive (awaiting the RH1). Interestingly, the "Returns" notice inside advised me to retain all original packing materials, in case I need to return the shipment. I'm not going to return them over this, but the experience doesn't encourage me to continue doing business with Musician's friend.
jaylen
It sounds like Musician's Friend is starting to skimp on the packaging now. I'm glad I ordered from them back in March when they still shipped MDs in a padded box. I wonder if they're differing their packing styles according to buyer location.
