NH1 holding its value

I was surprised to see two NH1s being sold tonight on ebay (UK) for 156UKP and 166UKP (Including postage) (Roughly 230 and 245USD). For not much more you could buy a brand new RH1.

I don't know whether this is an indication of the quality of the model, or whether people are getting carried away with their desire to have one.

I think it's a combination of your points, as well as people's inability to be objective when bidding. But then it's this lack of objectivity that has made ebay the success? that it is.

Hi-Prices :P

The MZ-NH1 is not without its faults (ie. weaknesses), but personally I like its:

1) 'tried and true' LCD display versus the iffy longevity of OLED (even though the LCD is ridiculously small)

2) I like that its control buttons work without issues years after I bought it (unlike the common problems with the MZ-RH1's controls after some use)

3) I like the 3-line remote versus 1-line (that remote itself is worth some decent money)

4) I like that it has Group Release like all other Hi-MD units, but unlike the MZ-RH1

5) I like that it has a Group button on-unit

6) I like that it records in the (more reliable, though it's only my unproven opinion) slower revolutions-per-minute of previous models, unlike the speedier RH1.

7) I like that it doesn't have an annoying big EJECT button (which seems to put table-centric use over portable use a priority).

8) On a looks angle, I think it just does look better than the MZ-RH1

I doubt half of those points will factor into higher prices, but I think the looks and some other basic points might :P

tekdroid - I agree with most of your points, especially its looks and reliability - in fact I still use mine as much as my RH1. (And I have a back up in case I ever damage the original one). The main reason I have an RH1 is because it can play MP3s without conversion. I listen to a lot of Podcasts and this feature really saves me a lot of hassle. It also handles the pitch control feature better than the NH1 - less "artifacts" (I think that's the right word) in the playback.

Yeah Sony don't rest, it's just a shame about reliability sometimes. And let's not forget remembering recording settings without digging into the menu, too.

... which in turn makes the NH1 tied to a given power regime, correct? That's one thing that stopped me - an NH1 bought for European charger is not much use over here, and the power supply is different. Mind you I suspect the power supply could be obtained, I was just turned off by having Yet Another Incompatible Device, given that all the other MD's I have except the RH1 work off the same 3V power supply (and also one that I have for the car).

The NH1 uses the same power supply worldwide (6V) - but you are correct in that the native charger on the NH1 is not 100-240V like some models. Although an equivalent charger from another 6V model or an Sony Travel 6V charger works fine. I actually imported my NH1 from Australia but have never used its original charger. I just use the one from the DH10P or sometimes the one from the EH1.
