My predictions on the forthcoming walkman video are,

Dazzling screen (3.5 inch, 16:9 Wide screen TFT LCD 480 x 272 pixel, 16.77 million colors )

xmb (cross media bar )interface with shiny, touch sensitive interface panel.

both hdd and flash(flash will be damn slimmer) versions.

record TV shows directly.

wifi support, share video/audio/picture/what-not ?

unlimited fun.

480x272 is so last year (cowon A2). I want 720x480 (480p).

Shiny and touch sensitive don't jive in terms of usability.

Archos PMPs can record already.

Sony has Sony Music and Sony Pictures, so recording and sharing content are highly unlikely

given the direct audio recording capability of new walkman(noise cancelling ones), direct tv record facility on walkman is expectable.

downloading the video and living with so many video standards and their slow conversions are real pain.

if there is no video recording capability, they are not going to differentiate from rest of the crowd.

one more prediction is they will throw some Bravia technology into it. what say ??

Bravia is LCD. I thought Sony is using OLED for their Walkmen?

I'm simple.

- Great design, please Sony. Don't make it much bigger than the iPod as it is.

- Great functionality.

- Connectivity with the PS3.

- Battery life. Please Sony, this is something you do better than the competition, and is the one thing I hate about my iPod. 20 hours, would be great.

I wish Sony would have just slimmed down the Vaio Pocket and add functionality to it. Would make a great product.

Rightly or wrongly I am expecting big things from Sony with their rumoured Video Walkman. My hope is that the delay since releasing the A1000/3000 Walkman is because they have learnt their lesson and are making sure that what they release will be ahead of the rest. I don't know that much about the PS3 but from what I have heard Sony took extra time to make sure their product was as good as it could be. If they apply the same approach to a Video Walkman then hopefully they can make inroads into the IPoo Monopoly.

They will of course need to also deliver software that is better than or at least equal to ITunes. Hopefully they have also learnt their lesson here too. On the software front I am expecting less emphasis on ATRAC and more emphasis on the Hardware - and doing that by making the player compatible with almost all formats. However one problem all non-Ipod manufacturers face is that alot of consumers have downloaded music from the ITunes store that I imagine will never be able to be played on non-IPod players - if Sony could have some arrangement with Apple so that Sony players could play DRM ACC then that could really open things up for Sony. But I can't really see that as being possible?

For what it's worth I hope that as well as having high capacity HDD players they will also have high capacity flash players - I think if they could incorporate advanced features with high def. screen into a 16GB flash drive (and assuming good software) then I think they would be on to a winner.

In terms of the high capacity flash drive are there any techinical wizards out there that know whether you can join to flash drives together - ie. there is a flash drive manufacturer that does 8GB drives - is it possible to link those together to get 16GB? or do you need just one 16GB drive - I am guessing it is possible because that SanDisk player has 8GB and you can add a 2GB card to it.

Anyway I apologise for my rambling overly-worded novel!

I can't really say what the new walkman will have, 'cause I'm sooo curious of what sony's comming up with this time.

it can either go terribly wrong or be a hudge succes.

I can only hope for the following:

- 10 band EQ, clear stereo, clear bass, NC

- very nice OLED FULL color screen

- great HDD capacity whise

- support for: mp3, wav, wma, aac, he-aac, pcm, atrac3, atrac3+, xvid, divx, mpg, mp4, wmv, avi, jpg, tiff, png, gif

- tactile buttons

- good stock earbuds

- >20 hrs battery life

- very nice menu structure (XMB for example)

- WIFI

- recording capabilities (audio and video)

- many interesting and neath functions

- great form-factor (different than standard form-factors, perhaps PSP-like. )

- great design. use of high quality and durable materials like metals. Black and stylish colours, make it a style icon, not a toy.

- make sure that SS works from the start of perfectly smooth. no hick-ups or other annoying stuff this time. please!!! make sure video and photo are well integrated!

I hope some-one at sony will read this, but I'm very sceptical :P

Just hoping the video walkman will be something like this.

I have faith in sony, but i'm very anxious.

I can only hope for the following:

- 10 band EQ, clear stereo, clear bass, NC The s7xx series has this, so a higher-end prod will prob have it

- very nice OLED FULL color screen As above tho the LCD from this phone, maybe bigger, will be used IMO http://www.macnn.com/articles/06/10/13/son...n.bravia.phone/

- great HDD capacity whise very likely if there is video

- support for: mp3, wav, wma, aac, he-aac, pcm, atrac3, atrac3+, xvid, divx, mpg, mp4, wmv, avi, jpg, tiff, png, gif The only one these in doubt IMO are xvid/divx the rest are all supported by previous sony/walkman products

- tactile buttons most sony players have this

- good stock earbuds see s7xx

- >20 hrs battery life definite, ony the a1xxx has less than 20 hours life

- very nice menu structure (XMB for example) sony intimated that xmb will be a cross-sony UI (see their av receivers)

- WIFI unlikely tho I would like to be surprised (use for downloads and sharing less restricted than zune)

- recording capabilities (audio and video) s7xx has audio, video is a maybe IMO

- many interesting and neath functions lol who knows!

- great form-factor (different than standard form-factors, perhaps PSP-like. )

- great design. use of high quality and durable materials like metals. Black and stylish colours, make it a style icon, not a toy. All nw devices have used some metal AFAIR NW-A and HD were all well built IMO

- make sure that SS works from the start of perfectly smooth. no hick-ups or other annoying stuff this time. please!!! make sure video and photo are well integrated! Now this is somthing to really worry about!

@ sif

I'm aware of those things you mentioned. but for me the video walkman would be absolutely awsome if it had all these functions, and I think every-one would buy it. If it had all those features no one would consider an ipod.

This would just make an awsome walkman.

DSP,

>>use of high quality and durable materials like metals.

I feel the carbon fiber, which is used for high end vaio(sz premium) will be an ideal choice. Very light weight, shiny and scratch proof.

All,

few sony ericsson cellphones in japan use bravia technology. (google for sony ericsson w44s )

I have a suggestion. Sony, to make your life simpler and better profits, why don't you just pay Cowon, and rebadge their A2 into a walkman device, and maybe add in the PSP GUI and/or H.264 capability (keep the A2's Divx/Xvid capability). Nah, that would be too easy. Besides, Sony USA still thinks Divx is the spawn of satan (see sig).

Album art shd be shown in two dimensional matrix for both movies and music so that it is quite easy to find the albums.

Present xmb in psp shows album art in a single row, wasting a lot of screen space.

If any of the designer happens to read this, pls change the s/w for above requirements.

With the way things are going, Sony will probably just release something like the Zune next year, after Apple conquer the market with 6G iPods and iPhone. Late and always behind, that's a Sony.

Pata please PM me next week's lottery results :D:lol:

If apple releases their 6G ipods before christmas next year, I don't see how sony will be behind them if they release one at the same time as well. as for the iphone, how will that be different from any other phone on the market that offers mp3 playback, acc, playback? But I am sure all the mindless drones out there will have to get one since it's an iphone. like 0Mg!111!oneone!!1

I'm going to wait for the sales results for the zune and see how msft did during the shopping season. They were able to take on sony with the Xbox and actually sell a good amount of units, it is possible the zune could very well do the same.

Nothing brings out the best in companies like competition. so let's get the game on. B)

With flash memory capacity going to 16GB to 32GB, and price going down, I don't see why the PSP would use a large and fragile HDD. The PSP will still need to accomadate a UMD drive, since that is the media PSP games use. I want Sony to slap more RAM buffer on the PSP to reduce load times, since load times seem to be 1 criticism against the PSP in favor of Nintendo DS. Maybe slap a 2-4GB flash memory, and have the PSP copies most frequently accessed files to reduce loading times and increase battery life.

Personally, my Sony Video Walkman is just about half a decade old: It's my Sony Clie TH-55 (PalmOS) with a 2gb memory stick and a 480x320 TFT LCD screen. Using Kinoma Player 4 EX, I've been automatically dumping BeyondTV PVR conversions (natively in the BeyondTV software) into the Clie for mobile viewing.

The funny thing about this "drama" is that we're talking about dinosaur technology.

yeah, sony clie´s. good old times. good old Palm OS :(

sony´s new video walkman must be very good, ´cause they have to beat standards they´ve set themselves.

I mean, PDA´s are underrated. look at those old clie´s. very good screens, very good audio performance, they rock!

and what about PSP? that screen is awsome. A widescreen cinema in your pocket?! beat that!

I hope the new video walkman gets it right from the start. Not such a lousy screen like ipod and zen, but a decent screen, so that you can actually watch a movie. great battery life too, good codec support. not as with PSP (only MP4 and in some crippled way too). then it´ll be an awsome device.

But I´ll guess it´s just a matter of time before we get our answers.

You raise an interesting point, the Clie TH55 had an interesting power management scheme where there were separate dedicated video/audio processors that ended up saving a ton of operating time on the internal lithium batteries. I wonder if Sony plans to resurrect that approach.

Is sony really making a video walkman? I don't see why. I mean, isn't that what the psp is for? Who would want to watch videos on a small screen on an mp3 player anyway?

Stick with music sony, your doing great.

Or think to go IPOD VIDEO, works great, and gapless

I really don´t think Sony will give an Video Walkman, seems they quit the fight for HDD. I like Atrac, but when Ipod give gapless playback I bought one.

It´s true that it´s not the best watch a movie in a little screen, but in a trip or in a long wait you can use it and works fine.

Hope Sony gives something soon, but I get bore of waiting and Ipod gives me what I need.

CES, Sony didn't even mention the Walkman series. Have they pretty much abandoned all hope in a Walkman Video?

Did sony even had any interest in Walkman Video? They don't even care about their portable audio products anymore (lack of accessories, many accessories only available in Japan). Sony probably thinks they can get more profit from other stuff other than portable audio/video. The main goal for sir Howard right now is profit, period, not pleasing the users. I think they are trying to get profit form PS3 and bluray first as top priority.

Sony have not abandoned this endeavor. Stay tuned for in-depth news regarding development of the Walkman series for 2007. :)

How long will you make us all wait? Feb? March? Longer? I long for the day when Sony does something unsuspecting and awesome. Like ATRAC on SE phones ;-) Maybe something even better. Any hints? B)

I thought I had read something about sony admitting they were working on a video walkman a while ago?

am I right or wrong?

I also think Sony did say they are developing a video Walkman.

Anyway, actual photo and specs are what people are wanting (and release date). B)

Sony already has a PMP with great potential, the PSP. Yet, Sony neutered its video resolution support for non-UMD videos, and restrict the codec support for specific video/audio bitrate. What a waste, considering the PSP has better and larger screen than the competitors, especially during its release. Cowon A3 (rumored to support APE losless, OGM/MKV containers) will mop the floor with whatever video walkman Sony can announce. Even the Cowon A2 will probably beat whatever Sony had in mind in terms of codec support.

I also think the video walkman will have an OLED screen.

many of the asian manufacturers are swapping to OLED technology for their devices. Look at samsung and sony for example.

I think OLED is great. You can really ''hide'' an OLED screen behind the surface of a device. Look at the sony NW-S700.

The color OLED looks great. But I've recently bought a samsung YP-K5 wich has a bigger color OLED screen and that one is even better. It's way sharper and very vivid. Beats sony's OLED screen (form the NW-S700) in every way.

So just imagine (and I don't mean the samsung slogan) how the video walkman would look like with one of these at (for example) PSP's resolution. I can't wait :):)

kick in Clear stero and clear bass, NC, VPT and a HD digital amp and decent codec support and I'm very happy
