Yet another A8xx victim.

Question

Today I made the horrible mistake of asking if I could hold the A808 in a shop.

Of course I cloudn't let go, took it with me, gave away my A3000 which suddenly looked bloated and am now installing my music.

And this is all your fault, ATRACLIFE! B)

Wish you and your new baby the best of luck.

Now your next dilemma protecting ur baby, with leather or a silicon skin

Thanx.

No, I'm not gonna get it a case.

I'll use it for audio only so I don't mind little scratches on the screen. I kept my NW-HD1 and A300 for years in my pocket and they stayed as good as new for a long long time.

And in one or two years I'll probably have another new sony baby, with >16Gb capacity

I know how you feel. I tested the NW-A800 for about a minute, and then had a problem in deciding the colour. Which colour did you get?

You said it looked extremely cute. The NW-A800 seem extremely durable with the metal finish, and glass screen.

Don't think protect, think accessories :D .

Dura, congrats with your new purchase!!

@ above:

Is the screen really made of glass? isn't it just plastic?

greetz

The quality of the screen and how it feels suggest that it is glass. Which feels very firm when pressed against. I would be surprise if it was a high quality plastic, but not disappointed. For now I will state that the screen is a clear strong polycarbonate or glass.

@Ascariss: no, I didn't trade in the A3000. Sold it to a friend.

First impressions of the 808 (vs the A3000):

- much faster

- hopefully better battery life (the main reason I got rid of the A3000, batterylife seemed <10 hrs on 256kbs)

- smaller of course

- screen readable in daylight

- naturally, less memory, which I ratherm iss.

The provided headphones are rather good, but I still prefer my shure E4s for isoation and sound quality. But of course the shures are far more expensive.

Sound quality is clearer and more dynamic then the A3000, but at the price of a slight added brightness, where I prefer a more sonore sound. Happily the equalizer works very well. As DSP once stated, you can make it sound like you want.

The other things, like DSEE (seems to add a little bit of treble on ATRAC256kbs), VSP and clearstereo (makes sound broader but spoils the little bit of spatiality the e4s offer) I found less impressive.

Transfer to the player is much slower then to the A3000. Loading 7,5 Gb took almost an hour, 20 Gb on the A3000 was finished in 25 minutes. Strange....

Builtquality seems excellent, and the screen is really very good, I can even imagine people actually watching a whole movie on it, but for me it is solely a music player. The menus work fast and are instantly comprehensible without having to consult the manual, animation and so is very well done.

Indeed, I blame ATRACLIFE for this damn addiction I seem to have. When I joined the forum I was quite content with my NW-E407 but since then have accumulated a few more devices. I now own the A1200, a HD5 and a NW-S706 and am now deciding on wether or not to buy an NW-A8xx. Now if there was no such thing as ATRACLIFE I would probably own just one of the above units. So thankyou very much ATRACLIFE for making my bank balance a pittiful site and having to explain my purchases to my not so happy female companion lol

I was hesitant at first to buy one, since Sony might offer something better later this year, but when that salesman handed me one to test out, I just couldn't resist buying one lol. I ended up getting the A808 model to replace my old E405. There's only one word to describe the player... amazing. The rich colour, easy navigation, video playback, blah blah blah. At first I thought I wouldn't use the video function but after seeing how smooth and beautiful the picture is, I'll be watching video clips on it everyday. I even got to design a skin (www.spideyskins.com) for the walkman, some spiderman promotional thing. I'm no audiophile, but DAMN this sounds awesome (but then of course, I was listening to Atrac+ 48kbps before  ) If anyone's unsure about getting one, just go to the store, hold one in your hand and be amazed... At least in Canada, for the same price as an iPod Nano, you're getting so much more.

My only issues with it is the software. I tried to encode a movie trailer (quicktime) but it stops at around 14% and eventually fails. It probably has something to do with codecs on my computer... meh! I'll try to figure it out.

Blame Atraclife? More like blame Sony for making a great product

Interesting review on Amazon for the A806. Should have come to ATRAClife!

User error I would imagine, not a technical one. Probably never came across this site.

It is apparent that this person does not know about ATRAClife, since we would have helped. This obviously points to user error. There are obvious things that SonicStage does, but there are instructions on how to install the software. It is taking time to write a SonicStage review  . Well I better make it an informative review B) .

Most disheartening thing about the review is 8 out 12 found the review helpful.

I would agree with you there. The thing is that alot of people do not like SS, and the word has spread. I, like many others, do not have a problem using SS, and I quite like it. The key word is patience. Yes Itunes is a better software package, let down by poor SQ of Ipods in general, whilst SS is Ok, but backed up by superior SQ of most Sony products. I plan to put a review up on Amazon.co.uk, and as was mentioned above, would ask others to do so as well.

Found the following review for the NW-A808:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-NWA808FB-CE7-...7648518-7000740

I have placed a review for the A806 on amazon.co.uk, and would encourage others to do so, good or bad.

I have to wonder who else are having these kind of problems. I suspect that it is in the minority, but one user having this problem is one to many.

I have found more reviews for the NW-A805B.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-NWA805B-CE7-2...2844&sr=1-1

I am however encountering interesting behaviours with SonicStage, and trying to determine why. User error perhaps. Of course the y will be included in my review.
