AHH! WATER DAMAGE!

Hey guys,

I knew it was too good to be true, that I had gone an entire 2 months without a single scratch or blemish on my NW-A808...however, yesterday, I dropped it in the toilet!!! So it went from no damage what so ever, to completely dead.

It just suddenly made a very loud noise, the screen started to blink white and then it just died...

So I took it to my local Sony Authorized Repair Center today where I was told it will be repaired free of charge in 3-4 business days because it is still under the 1 year manufacturer warranty (I may have skipped over the part that it fell in the toilet.)

However, it has now been 5 days...and on their repair status site, it says they are awaiting parts order...

So I have a couple questions:

1. How long do you think a repair like this would take > If they are in fact repairing rather than replacing?

2. Secondly, if repaired do you think my music will still be on there? *fingers crossed* I had 2000+ songs on that baby =(

sorry about what happened to your a808.

i don't know how long the repair will take but i once accidentally washed both my usb and se k800 ( which had a memory stick) and they both worked after i dried them out in the sun.

not exactly sure how water proof the a808 is but if they dont change any of the flash memory you might have the songs on it, just like my usb and phone.

Sorry to hear about what happened. The biggest question you should ask yourself of course is, would you still want to use it after dropping it in the toilet?

Sorry to hear about your mishappenstance. In the end everything should workout fine.

It all depends on the damage cased whether the music will be on the player when it is returns. I suspect that it will take some time for the part that was damaged to be returned. I have taken a damaged electronic device to an authorized service centre. Both the service centre and distributer did not have the part, so it had to be brought into the country. I think it took over one month.

I feel your pain, however everything will be good.

Awww im so sorry to hear such bad news. For the repair, I dont think it will take over one month under normal circumstances for any products not sure tho. As for the songs, i hope it wont be a big problem. Everything would be fine if all the tracks are still on your computer, it just takes some patience to transfer them onto the player. Good luck

Flash players are actually hard to kill. The biggest problem potential is the battery. There's some possibility that other components might short out if the unit is energized when it is submerged, but generally speaking, the components are robust enough that this should not be a problem.

If this happened to me, I would flush the unit with distilled water, and then dry it out in a warm place (like a sunny windowsill) for 3-4 days. Then, connect to the computer and allow it to charge (you'll know right away if it can work, it should be recognized as a device and show a connection status).

90% of the time, if the submersion is in fresh water (not salt water) the units will revive.

If the unit were still dead after the above procedure, only then would I send it in for service.

I would be prepared for a strong possibility that the service center will reset the unit and format the memory- assuming they don't simply replace it for you.

They told u 3 to 4 days, pretty good service from ur sony service centre, cause the sony service centre in australia is shameful.....well they just can not compare to the japanese service at all. My mate had a sony dap and got told that it usually takes about 3 to 4 weeks, if unexpected happenes then 6 to 8 weeks required. So he waited for 8 weeks.....those repaire dudes left scratches on the screen and back of the player, vol button was broke, they formatted the player, all he asked was to tighten the back of the player, cause it got loose. I am sure ur player will be treated with care

AH that is so sad, although I can relate to that. Sometimes I wear these behind the neck headphones and lanyard that only goes to about my chest.

So sometimes i will be sitting on the toilet listening to tunes or watching something and I will be like, "this can't be a good idea". At which point I just hold the player in my right hand

and continue with the wiping process.

Now, about your problem, I really don't think that all hope is lost. I used to have an 8gb Ipod nano which went through a wash cycle in the machine (with bleach) and it also went through the dryer for about 20 minutes until I found it there. This was pretty much horrifying but I tried to be optimistic about it, since I really wanted one of the sony video walkmans.

To this day the nano still works, because I have had lots of water damaged electronics in the past, (phones, players etc), and the best thing for it is to not touch it at all and let it completely dry. You may have to just get a new one because Sony's support is kind of so-so.

Personally I prefer some reading material when sitting upon the throne
