  1. You have to turn on "hidden" devices in Device Manager. Look for instructions. Then see if there are some "rogue" NetMD drivers installed (in the USB section) that you cannot see. They all need to be removed. If that doesn't work, you have some kind of weird hardware problem like a bad cable, or a mismatch of USB speed.
  2. I would pick the JE640 (Type-R, MDLP) over the JE510. I would pick the JE630 (Type-R, SP only) over the 510. Both have keyboard input available, the 510 does not. I own both of these.
  3. Yes the most absurd mismatch between expectations and reality ever seen. If he's so sure it's worth $700 then he can afford the money to get it fixed first.
  4. All I can suggest is prove that it's not the hardware that's wrong, and go back to XP. If that works, you did something wrong - this stuff WORKS. But you probably need to install the 64-bit driver before SonicStage. SonicStage does install a bunch of drivers, or at least sets things up so that they will install automatically. The ones it installed (or placed on the hard disk, at least) will lead you down a false path. It may be as simple as finding the NetMD driver installed and causing a "driver update" from Device Manager. Essentially, it looks as if you may have to REMOVE something put there by SonicStage.
  5. It looks to me like some drivers have ALREADY been installed. You didnt answer my question about the virtual machine. In this case you have to enable the USB.
  6. Did you actually install the driver file from the downloads, first? If you already put Sony's version for W64 (with no N910 mentioned) you will be out of luck. Note that this is a driver for Native 64 bits, NOT the setup for the virtual XP which you can install on Ultimate edition of Windows.. PS. "Ultimate" referring to SonicStage has NOTHING whatsoever to do with Windows "Ultimate".
  7. You don't want a 510. Known fault, more of these died than any other single model. Including mine, the only unit (touch wood) to do so.
  8. I love Atrac CD's

  9. Wait a second. You typed "ffplay test.oma" but your file named test.oma was PCM, not LP2 - so it ain't going to work..... What about if you simply type "ffplay"?
  10. Maybe you should send the machine to Jim and the disc to me. But I can probably at least look at the machine. If it's actually blown he will be better for replacing it. But I would guess it's either completely undamaged or in need of adjustment, which I probably can do. I will PM you.
  11. That's weird. Did you go to the command prompt, prefix yourself to the folder containing them and simply type "ffplay" (or "ffmpeg")? With the first (original linked) version I got nothing. With the second (the one you downloaded) I always get some text with a version number. This is irrespective of whether I even try to feed it any audio.
  12. It was a buy-it-now auction. Once someone bid, it was sold.
  13. Agree, especially when I don't need to post-process the sound in any way. When I do (e.g. noise reduction from an analogue source), then I will record in SP and upload, or LPCM and upload (both are good) to WAV file in either case. WAV can then be sucked back in to Sonic Stage, and compressed to AAL; but usually I make a permanent (CD) version before throwing away the WAV files. If I need to edit only using delete/divide/combine on the PC, then the (Sony) Sound Forge 9 allows me to do that, provided I decrypt the files first. Even AAL can be edited with this tool. In addition, anything over 161 minutes (80m disk at LP2) I will use a 1GB disk at 256kbps in a HiMD unit, since this gives almost 8 hours in a stretch. But Kevin is right, once you have "good" sound in LP2, this is a great format for playback - on an "80m" disk you can get 4hr 50 minutes by transferring such tracks to HiMD.
  14. Sounds about right - just as JB980, there's a Euro model and a UK Model (except for JB980 there is no US or other model, not sure about Japanese). You can see the (service and user) manuals here. Your 940 does LP2 and LP4 as well (that's the Atrac3 Part - ATRAC3 refers to MDLP, not to the revision of Atrac called ATRAC 3!), the 920 does SP only.

    MZ-RH1 - WOW!

Not quite. The RH1 actually uploads SP which is then converted to either HiSP (256kbps Atrac3+) or PCM (1411 kbps LPCM), your choice. Once ffmpeg and VLC can play SP directly you may see a proliferation of that format on PC - at the moment it essentially doesn't exist, and is not allowed by Sony.
  16. Don't think so. I actually looked right through it and I didn't see an MD at all. That's not to say there wasn't one. It's possible, based on the pictures, that those extra sockets are not Coax but for the remote wired control. Best to try and find a manual on line, what about here? http://elektrotanya.com/
  17. 1. You cannot copy to another MD unless you've found a way to defeat SCMS 2. For CD, the best way is upload with RH1, followed by Nero on the resulting WAV file. That at least guarantees you lose nothing that you would not lose by down converting to 16 bits anyway.
  18. Interesting. Look at this http://minidisc.org/part_Teac_MD-H100LP+H300LP.html 1. Not clear whether the H300 is the same as H300LP 2. Looks like there is Coax in and out on the back of the one you sent link to. No mention of Coax on the MDCF page. Point #2 might confirm a difference....? All in all, a firm "I don't know".
  19. The main purpose of 24-bit output is to allow you to play back ATRAC sound at the highest resolution (assuming you have a 24-bit A->D in your amplifier). Since most ATRAC for more than 10 years *is* 24-bits internally. You could make 32-bit (obviously actually 24-bit)*** WAV files if you have a sound card with 24-bit IN. Stephen *** since 24-bit floating point has the capability to be BETTER than 32-bit integer, this conversion probably DOES make sense. However you would need some pretty good recordings with a very wide dynamic range before it will make a difference (relative to 16-bit), IMO.
  20. Correct. But "not supported" does not necessarily mean "does not work". Also it's not clear to me that VLC integration is done (although there is an ".oma" checkbox in its file associations already). I never heard more about that aspect of it. ffplay and ffmpeg should at least give output to the screen. Did you follow the new link properly?
  21. 15 quid should buy you roughly one (maybe 2) knob for the front panel.
  22. Most NiMH batteries need at least 3 full charge/discharge cycles before they will behave. Good luck!
  23. Philippe - all the guys with lots of MD here already know what you are saying. But 95% of the folks who come here looking for a solution had exactly 1 unit and everything was fine until one day Registry Mechanic or some utility corrupted their DRM keys. It's not so much crash (though of course the normal disclaimers always apply to people who have no backup). Stephen
  24. Couple of things, somewhat at random and not in the order you asked about: 1. If you replace Windows you will run into exactly the problem I described, on that machine. Don't. 2. To get around even a change in registry, you will need connex to net, if you messed it up. So this (installing version that for machine with no internet connx) solves nothing. The only OFFICIAL way to get your DRM back is from Sony's server. 3. Currently HiMD uploaded files are not reclaimable by the mentioned technique. Probably they will become so. Maybe a few months, I don't know. Hang in there. But if you've installed or reinstalled Windows, probably you can't get the files at the moment.
