Nah, it will stop working the moment you put the cover on and put it back on the HiFi Stack (just kidding).

So the key question is: does the 470 (with its BD-transplanted heart) record from analogue input or not. If yes, then all is happy and well in the garden. If not, then you've found at least one symptom of the failing drive. Kevin, I'm sure, will have comments.

It took me a while to figure out how LP4 works. I have probably 1000 hours of classical music recorded at LP4 that I use (mostly) to listen to in the car (MD changer = 6 x 5hrs 23m). What you DON`T want to do is to transfer from high-rate ``good`` audio using realtime downconversion. What you must do is to record in real time to the optical input (decks are good but portables will work) so no conversion takes place. That`s about it.

you might want to talk to Kevin (kgallen) - he has a LPM (Laser Power Meter) and is very good at the details of electronics. My first inclination would be to see if you can't adjust the laser. He's done the kind of swap you are talking about, but at the time he didn't have the LPM. Stephen

So - it looks like the 113 is some kind of a bit field, where each bit turns on or off a feature independently of the other. There's a nice example of this over at http://minidisc.org/mzr700_to_mzr900.html As to the magic parameters after 114, your guess is as good as mine. The MZRH1 is much much worse. Luckily for me the jog lever gave up working a long time ago and I cannot get into service mode on the RH1

Looks like someone has mucked up your unit. 113 should be 80. To get no volume limit, you probably want E destination which is by setting 114 to 24. Whoever did this got it backward. Strongly suggest you follow the directions on page 19 in the Service Manual.

Please read the last comment. YOU DON"T WANT 0113 on this unit. Look at 0114.

Sonicstage: Forgot to Check Tracks Back In
sfbp replied to rwh8196's topic in Technical, Tips, and Tricks
NetMD or HiMD? If NetMD there IS no checkin - all you're doing is decreasing the transfer count. If it's gone from the PC, it's gone. There are other ways of recovering data from NetMD disks but they are all painful. Even an MZ-RH1 won't do that. Sony designed NetMD as a one way transfer. If HiMD there's a bit more hope but only if you decrypted (unprotected) the files before you sent them to the HiMD device. -
One reason you might have trouble with the 3.5mm stereo jack would be if the voltage provided within the unit is too low? What about doing a power adjust on the mainboard?
-
Nothing for it but to follow carefully the instructions in the post Before then-applying the NETMD760 update from our downloads section. You can certainly start by setting the DISC MODE (on the unit) to HiMD but really that will only mask the problem
-
If you never followed the procedure for removing "old" NetMD drivers then the problem is likely to be that the recorder gets stuck in NetMD mode with the wrong driver. As long as you have the machine set its "disc mode" to HiMD you may get away without noticing this. As you have been transferring FROM minidisc to PC, this seems likely. All MD recorders are not alike. The MZ-RH1 is absolutely a special case. It works badly if at all with the old drivers installed, and is the only one allowing transfer of legacy (NetMD) data to the PC, whereas in HiMD mode all units should permit this. Statements about "all MD recorders" are then looked on with some suspicion. That, and the fact that each unit looks to be two machines (Jekyll and Hyde if you will), one a NetMD and one a HiMD. You should hear noises when it switches from one to the other due to the disconnection and connection of a USB port. My mistake was not to ask you for full details - if you have multiple recorders then multiple outcomes exist. What about the USB cable? Do you have exactly one for all those machines?
-
First things first. Is that a typo or are you really using 3.4 Sonic Stage? NOT recommended Since your Windows is 64-bit then you MUST uninstall all NetMD drivers except the NETMD760.SYS. This process is detailed elsewhere but you have to be careful to find the files in windows\inf which is a hidden (invisible) directory. It's entirely expected that a bare HiMD machine might show up, but only in HiMD mode. For NetMD mode, the subsystem will basically crash unless you get the (unsigned) driver NETMD760.SYS installed. This will only happen if you get a prompt asking if it's ok to ignore the hash/signature mismatch. If you only get the prompt in your earlier post, you must go back and disable signature enforcement for long enough to get the driver going. Looks to me like standard stuff still.

Kevin! I always wondered what you looked like ;;;;;;;;;; Seriously though, I enjoy his videos. Interesting that the MXD-D5C was the target of his interest. Mainly because I discovered that the Japanese domestic version would run M-Crew. I had a US-model D5C but it absolutely resisted (and still does!) my attempts to make that function work, even after my attempts to modify it (by comparison with the Japanese model, which I obtained later). I will say that he got a bit ripped off, certainly by comparison with my own experience. But I did use a different auction bidding company to the one he chose. I already added optical out to both machines, but the other part never worked. Sadly, the whole thing became a bit irrelevant once Sony withdrew their license payments to the company that bought GraceNote, because now the automatic retrieval of CD track information no longer works with any of the old Sony products (and that goes for SonicStage too). Nevertheless I've had it in mind to try and figure out how to make the darned thing work - the difficulty is that I don't have the Japanese schematic, only the US one.

The trick is the diode. 3.3V diodes are pretty well unobtainable now. So when you get your TOTX173 or whatever, you need to find a 5V rail, which is good because there's a 5V on the connector to/from the BD board. So it's three wires (push fitted at the ribbon cable end, soldered at the diode) and you're done. I didn't even mount the diode properly but the follow up by Cameron clearly details this. On some chassis there are spaces for both the backpanel connector and also a diode anchored to the motherboard. YMMV. One more thing: the critical pin is the DOUT on the CXD2662 (or equivalent), pin 21. Trace that connection in the schematic and it becomes obvious (well it was at the time, 9 years on I dunno (: ) Stephen

Good morning! A while ago one of our most experienced (read: has the largest actual variety of players, somewhere between 50 and 100 I believe) users did a survey where the sound of different units was surveyed. His conclusion: the N505 is right at the bottom of the pile. Part of the reason, at least, was the cost-cutting nature of its construction - it's one of the lowest priced models ever to hit the market. Do yourself a favour and pick up something else while the going is good. You're in the Southern US, so I would suggest perhaps something like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/SONY-MZ-NF610-Type-S-Net-MD-Walkman-MiniDisc-Player-Recorder-Blue-Works/333513305581 Even better might be a Hi-MD model, even if you only use it in NetMD mode, for two reasons: 1. The sound quality (of NetMD) is better and decoding more reliable 2. Transferring to the unit tends to be more reliable as a function of power, since the original NetMD devices can NOT get any power through the USB connector. Here's one of the most reliable models in that class: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Sony-Walkman-MZ-NH700-Portable-Minidisc-Recorder-Player-With-Accessories/223893965159 In addition you get the HiMD formats, which more than doubles your effective disk capacity on existing MD blanks. Hope this helps. BTW, the fact that both these are in Canada is pure happenstance. Most of my own purchases were made in UK and US. I'm sure cross-border won't be a problem even in the age of the great plague.

Sorry this really wasn't in the right place. I have locked the topic you added it to, that thread is long enough. Admin

Exactly. Now you have to suppress Windows checking that hash. It's called "disable signature enforcement". IF you cannot, it is a fatal flaw of Windows10 version 1909, but I seriously doubt it. Good luck!

here?

sadly, you cannot uninstall feature updates thanks for the warning so far, every time MSFT comes out with an '09 update (September, that is) it breaks something major (the '03 versions seem much better as they fix the bugs in the previous fall's new features). But don't panic yet. Probably you have to REINSTALL the NetMD drivers (using the override of unsigned drivers). Hopefully it's nothing more than the failure to preserve unsigned drivers going forward to the next "edition" ('last windows ever'!?!?!) of Windows 10.
-
That rather depends on the disc you had inserted. Do you have any fresh ones? Is the "Disc mode" of the RH910 set to MD or HiMD? We need to know a bit more about your PC and the version of Windows, and specifically what happened that might have broken something. I'm thinking hardware failure, but the only way to check that is if you have another HiMD unit.

12th April 2020 To my surprise I was able to edit a post. Those of you who have the rights, please think VERY CAREFULLY before doing so yourselves. The situation is that I haven't heard a word back from the site's owner, Christopher. Except that the site mysteriously came back to (read-only) life more than once after completely crashing where it won't display anything except an error. It's still not possible to add any replies or start new topics (actually a topic will start and the heading is made but the content is always thrown away). Until he comes back from wherever and does something, we are stuck. The good news is, the site still works for downloads and reading any existing content. Happy Easter, y'all! sfbp

Sounds good. I was just in the middle of composing a message commenting on your proximity - which never got sent because Chris got my message and did his thing with updates at the precise moment I pressed "Submit Reply". I take no credit for the fixes but I have a hunch that ultimately the set of security changes that browsers are going through (and sites like this one) are driving the migration (there have been a lot of update notifications from Invision lately) of sites. TBH I'm always a little wary when someone unfamiliar happens along and tells me the world is round (when I know it's flat) - or vice-versa. Thanks for persisting with this, and I look forward to sharing stories. Stephen PS there is no sign that Eric Woudenberg has "given up" on the minidisc.org site - there just isn't that much more to add these days.

Fixed Sorry about that.

Someone out there got banned and doesn't like it (or us). Funny place, the internet - all these different ways to diss those you don't believe in. I can take a look if you send me privately any IPs that don't work.

Where on earth did you read that? Someone having a bad day, or someone who thought they'd maybe taken us out (there have been several attempts over the last few years).
