  1. Same except that wav has no metadata embedded in the file.
  2. Take a look at his seller ratings: http://feedback.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&userid=jim.hoggarth&ftab=FeedbackAsSeller You'll find very little real activity in the past 6 months (I don't count a few gumstick batteries at $5 each). Your MZ-RH1 obviously hit him at a very bad time. Just get better, Jim!
  3. If he cannot fix it, there's practically no one else who can. Myself...... maybe, but only a limited range of problems. I'm not capable of replacing the major parts, nor do I have spares, whereas he can do both. One piece of advice - don't try a bulk deal with him. Send him one machine at a time. His per-unit charge is still incredibly low. The fact he's got nothing listed at the moment but is buying things probably reflects that he's trying to get things straight and start up again.
  4. I think that's harsh. I and others here can attest to Jim's skills. I had to wait a year once to get something fixed but fix it he did. He never charges for something he hasn't done, and he charges less than what it really ought to cost. Give the lad a break, he's been quite unwell, of that I am sure. Stephen
  5. They can be read by QHiMDTransfer, I think, if you're really stuck. Alternatively, you can do TOC cloning to get the music if desperate. These tracks are NOT encrypted (DRM'd), but they do have special headers preventing MD's and MD software from messing with them.
  6. 1. What kind of disk are you inserting in the NH700? HiMD (60/74/80) or NetMD (60/74/80) or 1GB 2. What is DISC MODE set to? (Menu of NH700) 3. Have you installed the 64-bit driver from our downloads section? If answer to 3 is YES, was the system working until a few days ago? What happened in between? Do you use automatic updates?
  7. Atrac3+ (himd) is the simple case (2 channels) of the multitrack format AtracX. I have a suspicion they sold that technology.
  8. Welcome to the community. I've moved this one to The Loft, hope you don't mind, the MD section is always a bit overloaded, should get you a bit more exposure in fact.
  9. Oh dear. I think you just got where you don't want to be. The problem is that you are trying to move the music to a new machine. Sonic Stage doesn't really let you do that. They (Sony) have a server which will validate the backup, but a better way is to re-import everything. However: you CAN NOT do that, since you probably have encrypted files which need to be :liberated: from their protection by running the File Conversion Tool. 2nd however: to run that tool, you must be under the old version of Windows and/or the old computer. There's nothing wrong with Sonic Stage, it's your music which is the problem. Supposedly there is a server on the internet which will validate the backup. People report from time to time that it is not functioning, then a few days later someone else always reports that it is working fine!! Some ideas: 1. Are you connected to the network? You need to access that server. 2. Is your firewall on or off? It may need to be OFF temporarily whilst you go through the step of validating against that server. 3. Can you go to your old machine still? I assume you ran the Sonic Stage Backup Tool. Is it possible to run the File Conversion Tool (look on the main menu under Tools, in Sonic Stage main screen) on the old machine? If you do this, many of your songs (the ones that you currently can not play) will be changed by the software and marked as <xxxxxx>.OMA (currently they are <xxxxxx>.oma). It's NOT enough to change the name of the file yourself, you MUST use the File Conversion Tool. For a 5000 song collection, this might take a rather long time, such as 12 hours. (Do not panic when you see their estimate of 40 hours it will be much higher than reality, as today's machines are faster). 4. Assuming the previous answers are YES, OFF, YES, and you succeeded in converting the files, now you can copy the entire folder with your music from old computer to new one. Now the Sonic Stage Restore will work fine, I think. If not, then you can re-import the songs using the "Scan Folder" option. And (please!) try not to use the "non-default" font size. Thanks. PS. Some files are not encrypted (protected). Examples: WAV (PCM), Atrac Advanced Lossless (AAL). So in the very worst case, you can copy those files. Or export to those formats from the old machine. Try the FCT first, though.
  10. 1. Sonic stage works perfectly with Windows 8 2. De-installing programs is done through Control Panel. Most programs don't have a specific shortcut for removing them 3. If you want to get it working, best is to install over the top. 4. To get NetMD functionality you will have to read some posts on this site to figure out how to enable the installation of the W64 driver (I assume you are running 64-bit Windows 8, not 32-bit).
  11. Forget the advice. I'm not sure why it's greyed out. Some questions: a. Can you PLAY these tracks in Sonic Stage, or ANY tracks (even some fresh ones you add now), on the PC? b. Is the NW-A3000 completely dead, or was it alive enough to transfer the music from it? (maybe they were already on the PC from before you transferred them to the device). c. If the answer to b was "alive", can you play a track that's still on the device? (the track and album should both light up green as you do this, and the sound should come from your PC speakers). There's a program called MP3CONVERSIONTOOL.EXE (I used capitals because that is, literally, the name of the file). If you look under the menu item for SonicStage, you should find a link to it. I think it will do what you want. Be sure to pick the output bit rate (for MP3) which suits you best. A final thought about what's going on : it may be that transferred tracks FROM the NW-A3000 cannot be converted. In this case you need to go back to the original copies of the files BEFORE you put them on the walkman. Whether MP3CONVERSIONTOOL.EXE will fix this, I don't know. But it works fairly smoothly, provided you don't have any super long filenames (Windows has a limit for filename length). If you run into this, change the destination for converted files to be something short-named, eg c:music, rather than something like "C:Documents and Settings<your username>My DocumentsSonyConverted filesmusic". I hope you understand what I mean here, come back to us if you're still stuck. Good luck.
  12. What exactly are you trying to save?
  13. Surely, had HiMD really caught on (Atrac-X got used by a lot of Cinemas and the like?), I think Sony would have eventually released the tools that their service department clearly had available for fixing users' busted disks. We're just victims of a failed commercial enterprise, not inherently bad technology. They correctly saw that encryption was the only way forward to protect IP, and they happened to be the first to actually implement it.

    MZ-N1 wanted

Nonsense! There are drivers here for just about all known units (regular and HiMD) that make NetMD disks, in our download section. Don't let the fact that there's only one driver for 32 and one for 64 fool you, as they work for EVERYTHING.
  15. Absolutely no way. Sorry. The USB interface (1.1) just isn't fast enough. The RH1 is the only one that is, for NetMD. HiMD is different because it's "just" a file system to the PC.
  16. Sorry.... there is no mistake or error. Except for MZ-RH1 you can not transfer from NetMD to PC.

    MZ-N1 wanted

If all you need is the ability to transfer recorded music from CD then I would go for an MZ-DN430. It's made from the later (latest) version of the DSP chip known as Type-S, so the reproduction is a little better than the N1, which dates from the days of Type-R (over 13 years ago!). The other option is (for outdoor use) the MZ-S1. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sony-MZ-S1-S2-Sports-Net-MD-MiniDisc-Recorder-Player-/181133218205 If you need a mike, then the picture changes considerably, however. General consensus is that these are both good machines. Where in our fair land are you located? (admins know these things). I might be persuaded to part with something I have myself (not an S1, though). Here's another one for an auction ending soon in your price range which has a microphone input: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sony-MDLP-NET-MD-Walkman-MZ-N707-Mini-Disc-Player-Recorder-Portable-Minidisc/151260393659 My point being that this is a reasonable model to use. They can also get busted ribbon cable but you may be lucky - the one in the picture doesn't look like it's been abused. The N1 may be nice shapewise, but the big advantage of the units I listed here is that they all use AA battery. YMMV

Much better to get something newer. What features do you need?
  19. Update: I just went back and did a full alignment (bricked the NVRAM with a 911 Reset! These Sony engineers have a sense of humour) and magically the power came right. Now runs perfectly. I guess I was inspired by success with E909, and persistence was in this case rewarded nicely. I too have the odd problem with keypresses but it's mostly ok now. I think maybe there was a screw missing from the board behind the jog wheel, which I must rectify at some point.

    MZ-N1 wanted

Forgive my asking, but WHY the N1? There are plenty of machines out there that use all the same accessories.....
  21. It may well be OK. But check to see it really is 1.5 under load ie with everything hooked up. Mine wasn't. I actually had to set the RPS to read 1.6 on its own dial, whereas unloaded I had it set on 1.4 to get the same 1.5 nominal voltage.
  22. If you read from the beginning of the thread, the new drivers (actually designed for MZ-RH1) were not able to be installed for most Sony NetMD units, or ANY Sharps. The result was a little project which I and Azureal worked on, and the driver package (the magic is all in the install files, the driver itself is unchanged) you downloaded was the result of that project. There's also a "play-all-known-units" driver for 32-bits, just in case you wanted to use it on XP, which is generally 32-bits only, or Vista or W7 in the 32-bit versions. Glad you got it working.
  23. Wrong driver. You are running w7 64 bits yes?
  24. I finally got my E909 working. About 1/2 an hour ago. Similar symptoms to yours. The big breakthrough came when realising that you really really must have 1.5 volts (from regulated PS if poss) for the servo alignment tests to work.
