  1. Does anyone have a good source for stickers/labels for minidiscs? I'd prefer either online with shipping to UK or a real shops based in the UK. I was going to check out Hobbycraft for something suitable. I'm after something that will fit the front-half of a disc that designed to have a label of some sort (it's a 3cm x 5cm rectangle approx). Slight lines (like the ones given with new blanks) or blank is fine, lighter colours preferred and it would be nice to have pastel shades rather than white for a change!
  2. Damn. I also tend to save websites if I think they are too niche and self-hosting on my wiki. I won't give up on this, imma gonna try and get in touch with "vanillakitty2009" somehow...
  3. The gallery was at https://picasaweb.google.com/vanillakitty2009/MD# Had a quick Google with the username "vanillakitty2009" but found nothing I was updating my little wiki of MiniDisc resources https://opticalgarbage.com/wiki/index.php/Main/MiniDisc
  4. See photo! Seller was local to me (Portsmouth) so I made an offer and got this beauty for £20 along with everything pictured (except the curious cat, he's mine) It's in good condition for it's age, has a really nice crisp loading and movement mechanism. I was intruiged about the R50 since minidisc.org has this little gem in the description: " Considered by many to be the pinnacle of Sony's Minidisc development in terms of ruggedness and usability " http://minidisc.org/part_Sony_MZ-R50.html I normally go for MDLP units but lately I've been burning more SP discs so lack of MDLP is not an issue for the moment. It's heavy though! I took it on a walk and had to switch hands while holding it after 20 minutes!
  5. Thanks! I got the replacement drive belts earlier this week (2 for £5 from eBay) and they seems good quality and the correct size. I had time today to attempt to replace it... it was a bit fiddly but I managed to replace the belt and my JE770 now ejects smoothly! I'm really happy - so total cost of a working JE770 was £15 plus some of my time. Here is a photo of the old and new belts side-by-side, you can see that old belt (left) is a good bit thinner and felt more "weak and tired" in my hands: While waiting for the belts I picked up a JE470 locally for £40 - despite being a decent unit it lacked the sound level meters on the digital display which the JE770 has - I think they look really cool so the JE470 has gone into storage to be replaced by the newly working JE770!
  6. Thanks NGY, useful info! Do you know which other decks have a MDM-7A drive? I could always buy a damaged unit with a working drive and scavenge it. That said, I've just ordered a new drive belt from eBay and will give this a go next weekend. As for drive belt-refit, this video was given to me by the deck seller as a good guide:
  7. Thanks, just used that today with my JE770 deck and it works very well - I think recording to decks may work a bit better than portable recording units. I've used this plugin in the past with Foobar2000 with portable recorders and always end up with rogue track marks. Conclusion: recording mp3s from PC? Decks are where it's at!
  8. Interesting PhilippeC, I never considered using NetMD to correct the rogue track marks. I'm curious though, have you found a reliable solution to recording via PC AND getting reliable track marks? I use the optical out built into my motherboard. I'd be happy with track marks put in place, even double marks right next to each other as long as they accurately let me skip to a particular track. I also dont care about titling the tracks either.
  9. I got a non-genuine Xitel DG2 on eBay a while back but could not get it to do the "discrete mode track mark" jazz as mentioned in the original post. It was just a continuous signal (eg. redlight stays on even during track change). Does the genuine Xitel actually do it? I mainly record mp3 from my PC to MD via digital optical out - is there a software solution that will let me get the "discrete recording track marks" without having to resort to kludges like the 4 second silence plugin in FooBar2000? Thanks!
  10. Hello KJ, just had to comment on your "escape Minidisc but keep coming back" remark - I'm exactly the same. I also have a Sansa Clip but sold it. Don't get me wrong the convenience and sound quality were great... but the novelty of having 2000+ songs wears off and I just enjoy Minidisc more. Menawhile back at the thread - OP, can you not just use an AA sidecar? Do the Hi-MD units not support that option? I can't remember the last time I used a gumstick battery as they seem really unreliable. It makes the MD unit a bit more bulky but you get the utility of using batteries available _everywhere_ and by using Ni-MH you save money and the environment.
  11. Hello NGY, I'm interested! Where are you based? Thanks
  12. Hello All! I just bagged one of these guys yesterday for 10 of your Earth pounds It has an eject disc fault which is down to the drive belt. A common propblem from my 15 mins of research! It plays a disc fine (seller demo'd that) but requires the unit to be turned upside down and subjected to a few bouts of "percussive maintenance" before the disc will eject My intention is to fix is as part of a fun project and I might learn something along the way. Has anyone fixed one of these or a similar one? Any tips/tricks to be careful of when embarking on this mission? I've seen a seller on ebay selling the exact belt I need and they say it's compatible for the JE770 so I will probably go for that. Apparantly most Sony decks used the same drive unit so I could find another broken one with a different fault and swap them over. Thanks!
  13. Hello l2ob, I'm interested in the MZ-M200 and a selection of your blank MD discs. How do I check your trustworthyness as a seller though? Can any of the Admins vouch for you? Would you ship to the UK? Hope you understand my caution Thanks!
  14. I think the last MD hardware was made in March 2013 by Sony but there is still a HUGE amout of MD equipment out there that needs to be fed MD discs. They will still be producing MD media for a some time yet I think. Hope the move to China doesn't mean a drop in quality. In my mind "Made in Japan" still stands for a lot.
  15. Interesting find Jimma, I take it the new discs are the 80 min ones? I saw Niege discs being sold on Amazon, I think £35 for 10 discs which is a bit steep! I think sometimes looking for a second hand sales is the cheapest way to stockpile MDs. Also, noticed you are in Winchester, I'm down near Eastleigh. Maybe we can start a Hampshire Minidisc users group/meetup - ha ha "Minidiscs Anonymous"
  16. I was thinking this aswell, isn't there a "from here" and "from beginning" recording option that might account for OPs problem? eg. she put it into "from here" mode when there was ~20min recording time left.
  17. What I've noticed is that from the introduction of NetMD the cost-savings started coming in and maybe the build quality took a hit (maybe Jim Hoggarth can confirm?). So you'll have an aluminium front case but the rear will be plastic (N707) versus all metal (R900 and similar vintage). The newer portables had Type-S which is the only advantage but it's only a marginal improvement anyway. Give me solid build quality and my all-metal case of the lovely R900!
  18. Sorry to bump this but it's been 6+ months and I'm still looking I PM'd KobyOne but no reply from him/her yet.
  19. Yep, I do that all the time. I use LP2 more though when I want two "albums worth" or more on a single MD. I use this to record: People don't realize how good it sounds. The only fiddly bit is the track marks. I play these back on a small pair of USB powered speakers connected to my MD portable so my listening isn't critical - but even when played on my Sennheiser headphones it sounds very good. In fact It sounds much better through the MD this way then native mp3 playback via my "cheap & cheerful" Sansa Clip mp3 player. I put this down to a better amplifier in the MD.
  20. Some MD portables took a proprietry Li-Ion battery, but these are Nickel Metal Hydride. The only problem with them is the memory affect I think. You have to ideally completely discharge them each time.
  21. Sorry to derail the thread a bit but this - this man speaks the truth SP and LP2 optically recorded the old fashioned way.
  22. Nice, this is another one to add to my "how much to hoard..." topic! The two portables I prefer though take the AA sidecar... and I ain't never gonna see AA's going out of fashion
  23. I realise this is an open-ended question but I'm wondering how many units I should keep in my stock to last me... say... the next 50 years? My usage is occasional use of SP and MDLP recording and playback. No Hi-MD. I have one R900 and one N710 unit in my "fleet". I feel I have enough disks in my stockpile and I'll add the odd 5 or 10 pack once a year. However I feel I need at least one or two portable recorders in storage. The R900 and N710 are two favourites so I reckon I should get one of each at least. These are mechanical devices after all. I'm just curious at the approach of my fellow MD users
  24. Welcome to the community. The sound quality will blow you away, I have no doubt. I've been using my Sansa Clip mp3 player for a while and recently started using MD again. As I've been on a break from MD for a time the difference in sound is even more apparent. Not to say the Clip is bad but against an SP or LP2 MD it is night and day for me.
  25. I use Sennheiser PX200 - they sound very good, not too tight and are foldable so excellent for travellers. The earpads are user replaceable, I bought a pack of 4 cheap and reasonably made 3rd party replacements from eBay when the original pair started falling apart. Should be bought way under your budget!
