  1. I've just started to get into Hi-MD and love it. Very flexible and at 352kbps it sounds oh so good. Doesn't mean I'm done with MD though. MD of all kinds, for me, is a "pry them from dead hands" sort of thing.
  2. Oh, I've followed that post with great interest, Steven but I don't have room. I'll try post to pics of the new rack so you can see what I mean Az, pm me for your wants. I could use some new MD's!
  3. I don't know if that will work with a DVD Audio disc though. Do let me know what you find as I am interested too. I don't know if that will work with a DVD Audio disc though. Do let me know what you find as I am interested too.
  4. The sad thing is the MoodLogic server was taken down long ago, and I assume it will no longer work.
  5. Here's a link to the D5C if anyone is interested, add me to your favorites as I will be selling all my duplicate stuff in the coming weeks! http://www.ebay.com/itm/300614552830?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649
  6. I've been trying to find some kind of program like MoodLogic fro making music mixes, as Allmusic bought the company and evidently killed it. It worked great for making mixes, had lots of categories - just really neat (MoodLogic came with the MZ-S1 i bought at Best Buy). I'd like to hear if anyone has some similar software - I forgot how much I liked it!
  7. I was noticing the Digital Media Port on my receiver and was wondering if there was a MiniDisc portable model that had these? I really doubt it but I thought it would be handy to listen to portables. I wonder how hard it would be to make a cable that would work and if it would be worth it? As always, looking forward to the replys!
  8. I'm leaning towards the CDP-CX355, it's the only thing left with Control A1 anymore. I'm curious if anyone has given one of these a listen and give me their impressions?
  9. Does anyone ahve experience with DVD Audio? I was thinking of getting a couple to try out but have no experience with the format. Sounds like most are going with a DVD player now and that's ok by me. I don't really have space for a Mega changer. Maybe I will try the CE500 just because it can do USB drives? I am curious if anyone is using Control AI and if it can put CD-TEXT onto a MD?
  10. I can't seem to find anything new that has specs even close to some of the mid-late 90's Sony decks and I'd like to get one to use for listening and recording to MD. I prefer a Sony ES model but am open minded. I'd even take a DVD player that can output 44.1 khz, instead of resampling to 48 khz. Toslink output is a must, coax would be nice too. I've been looking at Sony's new CE500 and it's looks like a great unit but dynamic range is in the mid 80's and I think I'd be cheating my MD recorders. Decks I like so far doing research are all Sony's: CDP-C89ES, CDP-CA70ES, but I'm pretty sure they do not read CD-RW. If anyone can help with their observations I'll be grateful
  11. 18 - I think it's futile but so is MiniDisc. FWIW I signed it.
  12. Wiz: Do you have any experience with Onkyo's CD player, the companion to the MD-133? I would like to know if it can do CD-RW and CD TEXT. If I can, I might part with my MXD-D400. I'm really liking the deck so far...
  13. Thanks for the ideas, Slug. I never thought of "faceplates" - that is a great idea. Maybe I will ask the forum for broken portables? PhilippeC, thanks for those pics - I've got some great ideas running around my head similar to those... I was thinking of some "glamour" shots of the more high-end units, in a staged setting. Thanks again for the ideas, when I get something in the viewfinder I'll make sure to share, to see what you all think.
  14. To mark the passing of MiniDisc next year, I was thinking about putting together a display to hang on my listening room wall. I was thinking about putting together all the Sony blanks I have that are still in the wrapper, along with some print ads - so far. I am interested if anyone else had thought of something like this, maybe we could bounce ideas around? I haven't held any of the print ads in my hand, what I've seen so far, it's no wonder MD never took off here and I am thinking about making my own -using the style similar to the ATRAC stuff on Sony's website. Any feedback from those who remember the various print ads would really help. Of course I will post some pics once I get something to mock up, I think MD deserves to be shown off. Thanks in advance!
  15. The Hi-MD units will work fine with regular MiniDiscs, and can format these to get more capacity. The Hi-MD are physically different and will NOT play or record on regular MD equipment. Welcome back to the light!
  16. Ok, but if it's just for storage - and the lossless part is not used upon reproduction - why not just store the ATRAC3/+ at 1/5-1/10 the file size? That makes no sense at all.
  17. I was listening to the Foo Fighters - Stanger Things Have Happened. It's Dave Grohl playing a guitar in a quiet room with a metronome, if you are interested. Doesn't get more quiet than that... It split the sound stage high to low and the voice was both near and far - totally unlike PCM. MP3/4 had almost the same effect. Try it for yourself if you have any doubts. Why would there even BE AAL if not all of it was used on reproduction? Honestly, that statement just defies all logic.
  18. I read quite a lot about AAL when it first came out. Then HDD were more expensive and I used MD's both at home and on the road, so I thought it would be perfect for my uses. But it didn't sound like PCM and I could pick it out (blind) among 4 different codecs. I haven't even tried FLAC - after AAL I figured it would fail also. Now with better extraction tools and cheaper HDD's I just keep all my CD's on an NAS (.wav) and burn MD's when I need them... Zahne - your post is full of win! Do you want me to send you a PSP and a Hi-MD to get started?
  19. Hearing is a funny thing, I don't think it's just your eardrums. I gotta agree with Wiz that much of it is feeling. Then there's the brain which can be trained to notice certain things like artifacts. Heck, I used to be able to tell if there was a CRT Television on in the house because of the HF it put out. I've heard of others who could hear that but never met one personally. Some years ago I sat down and actually blind tested several codecs to figure out my best practices. PCM was pretty easy to pick out right away. Soundstage - just like Wiz says. Nothing else came close when compared. ATRAC Lossless I did not find lossless at all and was sad. Maybe the FILE is lossless and the playback chain is not right, who knows? But in my mind, if it changes the soundstage enough to notice it's not lossless. I think that's one of the reasons I like MD so much, it does a real good job at keeping the soundstage intact, considering the bitrate. I'd be lying if I said MD sounded better than PCM or vinyl or whatever. I like holding the discs in my hand, looking at labels, reading notes, etc... That's a large part of it for me. I say in the end, let your ears be the judge, spend the bulk of your budget on speakers, turn off every fan you can and ENJOY!
  20. Just to clarify: are the MD's actually recording sound? I'm not sure if the text is transfered individually for each track or as a batch at the end of recording. Does it put the track marks in the right places? If there's no track marks it makes sense there's no cd text. Have you tried ejecting the discs after recording, then checking?
  21. I've run into problems while burning CD-TEXT to CD-R and have found that, for me, only Nero works on the Sony equipment. Sure Sonic Stage and MediaMonkey burn it to the disc, and it can be read from the disc but when it come to copying the text... I haven't figured out why so I just use Nero and it works every time (MXD-D400).
  22. I'd be interested in a new release on MD. I thought it was so cool that Cheap Trick put their last album on 8-Track. But very uncool not MD, lol.
