  1. yep that's true...the ipod does hold approx 7500 songs on it though this is with mp3's ripped at lower quality...and months and months of music can be stored as well but the only gripe i have against it is the battery life (10hrs max as compared with the md's 50hr+)...indeed it does have approx a 32mb buffer which is good 4 say 20min worth of shock protection...but wot i do worry about is the fragility of the hard drive itself...sure it's encased and padded but hard drives do eventually fail and having a laptop hard drive in the ipod i would keep good care of it... and yes you're right...this thing is tiny!!! well the n1 imo has a better sound than the n10...the n1 sounds better than my friend's 710 unit...i'm not 2 sure about the quality of the 500 or the 707 becoz i'v neva owned those units before...but i would'n think there would be a slight difference in quality because the sound output of the n1 with the bass and treble settings set to max does indeed sound better than say mayb the 707 from wot i've heard...not 2 sure abou this but this is my guess since a lot of ppl i know seem 2 complain about that unit... :? and no ur right about mp3's don't have a good home unit with remote...i use my comp setup most of the time when i'm on it...it does the job so long as it's got a decent set of speakers hooked up to a decent soundcard...and good luck in the decisions u make about buying the right unit...
  2. yeh a hacked 707 would give u access to a dedicated line out i would think...soo to transfer to a laptop u can just get a normal 3.5mm stereo cable and hook it up from your recorder's LINE OUT to your laptop's MIC IN (or LINE IN if you're lucky)...and then use a recording software that allows you to record from the mic/line in and you should be good form there...
  3. u can turn it on thru the menu system i would think...there should be a function there in the main menu called GROUP to turn on group mode on or off...if you have either the RM-MC11EL or the RM-MC12ELK then you can just press and hold the DISPLAY for a few seconds and also search for the menu called GROUP....alternatively you can check whether or not group mode is turned on by seeing a "G" in front of the time elapsed (on the RM-MC11EL) or a symbol of a folder on the right hand side of the remote's LCD display (on the RM-MC12ELK)...

    Help no clue !!

the DE-NE1 from Sony seems to be the best model there is (from Sony) in the mp3 discmans arena...i would go for MD's if i can fork out the extra cash but the mp3 discmans are pretty good as well...i own a Panasonic SL-CT800 mp3 discman and i find it pretty useful to transfer from CD->MD thru optic out when i'm away from my computer...in terms of sound quality i think both of them are about the same (though with crappier quality mp3's you can hear the difference on the mp3 discman but not so evident on MD's if recorded through optic out)...but ultimately it's up to u both have their pro's and con's....
  5. speaking of the ipod i just got a brand new 30gb version a few dayz ago... good 4 file archiving...but the ipod as compared with md has less hrs of playback and is bigger plus heavier...not that i knock it or anything it is a good product in its own right...the amp on the ipod is rated at 30mW RMS per channel as compared with Sony's 5mW RMS per channel...soo the ipod has a "stronger" sound in that case (by stronger i mean louder and has more impact in terms of bass and treble output) so it does indeed sound quite good coz of the higher output... in terms of the sound output from Sony's recent MD devices i would say that my preference would be my N1 unit over my N10...the N1 IMO seems to have a more "rounded" sound than the N10 (which i feel is a little "thin") but the sound quality from both of them are generally pretty good overall... and an SD player is a removable flash based memory mp3 player from panasonic...see here for product description...
  6. no the E10 is a "read-only" player meaning that it can only playback MD discs and not record...SonicStage is used for music transfer from PC -> MD (NetMD) and as such needs a compatible NetMD recorder to use it...since the E10 is a player it won't come with it since it does not need to record...
  7. no G-Protection back then but it should be good enough...though i'm not 2 sure about jogging with MD's since i carry my SD player when i go jogging...but anyway i hope u get the best deal on that R50... and wot did you mean by "quality" btw???

    MZ-R3 Drop Outs

um i'v neva owned an R3 before but i still have an R2 tho i haven't encountered any problems like this with it...it's probably the way the previous user handled the unit (e.g. mayb dropped it a few hundred times) and it could have screwed something up inside...not entirely sure if it's the recording head but it might be since my friend had a similar problem on his R30...but in regards to the service if you do get it serviced by Sony, they will fix the machine (or at least try to) though at a price...
  9. hmmm...well i think that US$225 was probably a little steep for something without a box or anything... :? but in regards to software u can dowload the programs here or see an alternate method of transfering songs from your PC -> MD with SimpleBurner and Nero here. You can also use RealPlayer One from Real which will also allow you to transfer music across thru NetMD... but the N1 is a good unit in its own right...i hav one and i'm pretty happy with it...and you could get the NF810 if you wanted to but if it were me i'd stick with the N1 but that's just me... the MD -> PC is not easier on either since they both have the same restrictions so whether u buy either player it's not going to make any difference since you still have to transfer to your PC in realtime...
  10. yep it is the Sony MZ-R50...as i said it is an old unit and u can find the specs of it here...well generally the older units sound a lot better than the newer ones...they seem (to me at least) to be more "rich" in the sound that they produce (i'm talking about my R50 as compared with my N10)...I'm thinking that this has to do with the amp that sony put in there. and IMO i would say that the R50 does sound better than the 707 or the 500...
  11. well not really...i hardly use the CDDB newayz...just so long as ur mp3's or CD's have titles then it should be good...otherwise u can title them yourself...it's not much of a hassle thru the keyboard anywayz...
  12. ohh rite...um well i think they sell sharp and panasonic units also in the US...but then again i mite b wrong coz i don't live there...=/ sony unit r generally good so check out the unit b4 you buy it...best of luck...
  13. heyy there, yeh i can say that the software that come with the current sony netmd's are flawed in many ways...but it's better than nothing i spose...u could also take a look at sharp units if u can find them...i don't exactly know exactly which country you're in, soo i don't really know what brands are available there...living with the software is ok i spose...i've had 2 generations of sony netmd units (N1 and N10) and i've come 2 live with the limitations of the software...it's not exactly "perfect" for d/l from the PC -> MD but it sure beats recording music in realtime...i can't say that any other brand is more preferable over another since i don't really have a brand preference...all i can say is that it depends on your tastes...sony and sharp units are generally pretty good overall tho sony seem to be the more popular because they push the media on the general public more than sharp does...panasonic also does a good job...soo the choice is up 2 u essentially... take a look at the units first and you can make your decision up then....
  14. yup i think your right coz windows' sound recorder does indeed have a limit thought what it is exactly i'm not 2 sure of...i hardly use this because i use my soundcard's recording software instead...if any of you are using creative s/b cards then use the Creative Recorder software that comes with it instead of Windows' sound recorder...it's a better program and it allows you more control than the one windows has to offer...
  15. my friend happen 2 make his own DIY interface + code the program to transfer the titles across...if i meet him again 2day @ uni i'll ask him about it and c if i can get him to post up the circuit board design and also the program...

    OpenMG Problems

try updating it by d/l the latest patch if it doesn't fix the problem...if that doesn't work then i dunno sorry... yup it will work fine...
  17. i'm finking that the airport scanners use x-rays (or sum sort of high frequency emr to check your luggage...) and i don't think that this can hav an adverse effect on the data on your MD since it's using MO technology, meaning it needs both heat and a strong magnet to alter or erase any data on those discs...those scanners don't induce heat or magnetism on those discs (any one correct me if i'm wrong) soo i would think that ur music would be safe...
  18. hmm...u mite b able 2 get an old R50 from ebay or sumfin if ur lucky...tho otherwise no it's very hard to get...especially since they'r older models...tho you can take a look at the Sharp units...they output quite a reasonable amount...Sony is your next best bet...

    wav files to atrac

you could try the Nero/SImpleBurner method of LP2 transfer...see this thread for more details...=) it bypasses the mp3/wav -> atrac conversion during netmd transfers soo i think this is your best bet since nero isn't really very strict on what it encodes...
  20. hehe..it's entirely up to u...put it this way both headfones r fine for listening to and are a LOT better than the one's that come with your MD... so yeh it really depends on what your tastes in music lie...the 888's are fine for a whole range of music...nice and clear...bass is alright as well...the 71's r for ppl who like more bass...i also just picked up a pair 4 myself 2 use on my md player...not 2 bad either...tho i still prefer y 888's for sum reason...but that's just my opinion....
  21. try here...not too sure if they still work tho but it's still a shot...
  22. yup i totally agree with that...the amp on my MZ-R2 and even the R50 far surpasses that on my N1 and N10 units...
  23. yup v true...this is cos as u said NetMD can't transfer SP or encode them as "true" SP tracks...rather just a higher bitrate LP2 track and then sends the info 2 the recorder to label the track as an SP track when it really is not...
  24. soo u checked all the connections and everything...hmmm so the toslink was glowing red @ one end of the cable and from the transmitter? coz otherwise it would probably be a faulty optic (tosklink IN) pickup on the recorder...but this would be very rare...but otherwise i'm not 2 sure of the problem sorry...
  25. hmmm...not too sure y this would happen but it sounds like a bug in SonicStage to me...I've had this problem occur to me on my N10 and i just did a complete re-install of SonicStage and it was back to normal...but you've already tried that soo i'm not entirely sure sorry... well u could use alternate programs such as Simple Burner or Real One for example to transfer your songs from your PC -> MD...so effectively it doesn't render your MD useless...
