heyy there, prices of electronics in HK isn't that much cheaper nowdays i'm afraid...malaysia...maybe...though while your in malaysia might as well check out singapore just in case...the NW-MS70 is a nice unit...256MB inbuilt with upgradeable MS Duo slot...not a bad unit at all... cheapest place? not too sure...you have to shop around and bargain with the shops...yes it will be compatible on a western windows OS...i've bought an older MS player from HK and it works in Aus on the windows distributed here...soo i don't think there will be any problems...

If anyone helps, I'll pay them £10!!!!!!!!

as sudden said most of us here just wanna help out other users...we just do it because we want to and not because of the money...i'm sure someone on this forum will know what to do so hopefully you'll get your problem fixed up very soon...best of luck... -
u could use RealOne Player from Real.

that's most probably the SCMS kicking in...damn Sony...

hmm...this really has me stumped...it's most probable that your recording head is stuffed up...over the years MD units in general will lose the ability to record...y this is so i'm not sure...i've never had a general failure of the recording head on the units that i own but i've heard many people who have...soo it's not an uncommon thing actually...usually when it records funny (or doesn't record) sometimes the recording head is out of alignment...and as i said earlier you can check by taking the top off and putting in and MD in the device and closing it...the laser assembly below and the head assembly above the MD should be aligned perfectly...but after some shocks it may get out of alignment...just becareful if you attempt this because if you stuff up sumware in the manual alignment it can render the recording head useless...(i've seen this happen before)

oh right if u were looking for a way to reset the settings/values to the default go here for the instructions...that basically gives you a step by step tutorial on how to reset your unit back to its previous state...

i think that from the MDSJE780 and upwards all have one SPDIF IN...but i've only seen a SPDIF OUT on the MDSJA333ES deck... -

the N707 is an alright unit...optic recordings can be done from that unit and also it has NetMD capabilities...hacking this unit is done through its software i think...just changing a few settings so that it enables the full functionality of the top of the range units...very handy when u r on a budget... and yes it's a good idea to stick to your sharp recorder for recording...sony units have been annoying me because of the fact that they can't adjust the recording levels on the fly... -

lol...yes i agree...though i feel that the US isn't as deprived of MD technology as Australia is...i mean they hardly have anything here (as in hardly any selection of brands)...it just recently started to get popular... :? oh well i guess we gotta live with that...but yeh i wish u the best in finding a nice deck for yourself... -

ahh ic ic...hmm...well just look around i'm sure there's bound to be a good deal on a deck with optic out on the net these days...even though it's not the latest model i'm sure it's still good enough... -
yep v true...older units can sustain many knocks...i mean my friend's E2 managed to survive a fall out of a window on the 2nd storey of his house...i doubt i can say that my N1/N10 can manage to live through that...though i must admit that the build quality isn't what you'd consider as "cheap"...even though it may have declined these few year at least they haven't gotten to the stage where the unit falls apart if you squeeze it too hard or something like that...

yeh most MD decks have optic out...just mke sure u take a look at the specs first though... -
hehe...yeh i do wonder as well...though i'd be interested in the build quality of an E10 since this may be where my next investment lies...tho i'm having no problems with my N1 or N10 units atm...N1 i've had for about a year now and it's still good...tho in terms of build quality i can't say that the N1/N10's builds r better than my old MZ-R2...that thing was a classic unit and it still continues to function after the countless times i've dropped it...

yeh as sudden said it must've been some typo or something...but to answer your question - no it doesn't work because the 3.5mm and toslink optic cables are made of totally different materials and are meant to transfer data in totally different ways...3.5mm uses a OFC wire and transfers thru analogue means wareas toslink uses fibre optics and transfers thru digital means with light pulses...they can't be interchanged or used together... -
i think it's a general fault with the shock mechanism on those units...my cousin bought a e500 and just a few weeks after he bought it, it started to skip...even on a stable flat surface such a table...the e900 & e909 i haven't encountered any problems related to skipping and the sudden burst of sound...but see what sony says about the unit...i'm interested to hear their reply because we're thinking of fixing my cuz's unit as well...

well depending on what u plan 2 use it for...if you want to leech a lot of files off other ppl then i think you're better off buying some hdd based player such as the ipod...but if u want to share your music around with your friends and also record from any source (whether live or from a static set e.g. PC, HiFi etc) )then it's better to stick with MD... if you want reviews on mp3 units then you can head over to eCoustics.com...for MD related stuff go to the minidisc.org site...there are links to reviews on specific units from Sony, Sharp, Panasonic, Aiwa and so on... hope this helps...

um 105kbps i think is reserved for the Sony MS Network Walkmans...you should encode those files @ 132kbps since that is the encoding rate of LP2...and converting them to wav from mp3's/cda's doesn't do much difference since they'll be converted back to atrac files anyway...but you might be able to get a higher quality output if you ripped a cd in wav format and then encode in atrac...

well there are a lot of people out there who've units have also "failed"...i.e. stopped recording like your units...i don't know why but they just do...i've heard and seen many of my friends' sony recorders fail after maybe 2 years...sometimes more and sometimes less...interesting thing is that it doesn't seem to plague sharp units as much as they do sony...i don't know whether it's from rough treatment or whatever but yes i from what i gather there's nothing you can do about it...interestingly enough i can't relate to this...i've been using various brands on MD recorders and players dating back to the MZ-R2 and none of them have failed me once...they all are perfectly fine and still record perfectly...why this is i do not know...i'm sorry to hear about your misfortunes but i think the best thing now is to get it to a Sony repair shop to have it looked at...(unless you want to buy a new unit i.e.) i'm sorry if this is not the answer that you were hoping for but if someone else has a way of fixing this problem then i'll also be checking up on how they've fixed/prevented the problem...

well it really depends on what type of sound you like...different manufacturers have different "sound signatures"...sharp have the boomy bass sony has a more rounded sound imo (treble and bass are more or less balanced)... and yes the N10's battery doesn't last as long as the N1's...even though it's running off an internal Li-Ion battery it's only rated @ 340mAh (or was it 370mAh?? - not too sure of the value) as compared with the N1's 1400mAh (min.) NiMH gumstick...the N10 should work with OpenMG because both my units (N1 and N10) work with both programs...so don't worry there... the Sharp DR470 is not a NetMD unit so it records in real-time...i'm sure that sharp will release a new NetMD unit very soon based on the 1-bit amp technology so if you're not in a hurry then i would suggest you wait and see what they have to offer...otherwise as Guest said Sharp don't make many NetMD units...i think they only made one? but yes there are pro's and cons about different brands...it depends on your tastes as well...also as Guest said if you do a LOT of live recordings then get a Sharp...otherwise if you're happy with Sony then stick with it...

depending on what quality that you actually transfered at (i.e. SP, LP2 or LP4) will determine the speed of the transfer...SP has the slowest speed...(around about 1x-2x) and LP4 the fastest (theoretical value of 64x on the N10)...to speed it up i suggest that you do the conversion of your songs to atrac before hand...this may be a pain but it is faster since when you want to transfer the songs are already in the right format and you can just transfer it straight away without it having to convert and then transfer (speed of conversion does rely on the power of your PC - the faster the better) that's odd...it shouldn't do that....i'm not 2 sure about his one...(i'm gathering that you're using sonicstage 1.5...from my experience with it this has never happened to me...seems odd that it deletes your tracks on the MD... :? ) if you're talking about recording in SP mode then that translate to exactly the amount that is stated on the MD (give or take) what i mean is that if you record in SP mode on an 80min MD then you will get 80min worth on of music on the MD...if you record in LP2 mode then you get about double that amount (at a slightly lesser encoding quality - though many people can't tell the difference between LP2 and SP unless you're an audiophile) and LP4 (even lesser quality encoding rate than LP2) translate to 4x the amount of music that you can fit on the disc (so on an 80min MD with songs recorded in LP4 you will approximately have about 5hrs worth of music) sorry my answer seems a bit long winded :? ...don't hesitate to ask more questions if you have any...i'll be more than happy to help out...

there are wireless remotes but the headfones are not wireless...and because i'm suspecting that they're using the 2.4GHz spectrum the signal shouldn't degrade to much...
-
sweet i'm interested how things will turn out for you... and in a way i've owned many other format players such as Panasonic SD Players, Creative Nomad mp3 player, Sony MS Network Walkman and just recently an Apple iPod...although most of these i use on a day to day basis when i'm commuting to and from uni they still don't have the flexibility that MD has such as recording and editing and as such i still stick to the MD format...

yeh i know it's a little "bug" that seems to plague simpleburner...oh well i guess we'll have to live with it until Sony decide to release a new version or an update or something to fix this... :?
-
when in simpleburner unplug it from the USB cable/dock and plug it back in again...that should work...(well it works for me...)

well the xitel is the only alternative for some people who want hassle free digital connection to your MD from your PC...my soundcard also has an optic input and output as well but for those who didn't think of buying a soundcard with such features would probably prefer this device rather than getting a new soundcard? it allows you to just simply plug the device into a free USB port and not having to open up the PC and upgrade the soundcard...also it's good for taking it around to other people's houses...
