np...glad to help... mods? well not much actually...i've managed to rip apart things and get them fixed up but that's about it...MD's i've been using for a LONG time (since 94 with my MZ-R2) and i've had my fair share of problems with a few of my units and decided to rip them apart and see if i can manually service it myself (most of the info i've gathered over the years about MD came from minidisc.org and various other forums)...i think the closest thing to a mod that i'v done is to co-develop a simple hardware (& software) MD titling device a few years back with a friend and yeh that was pretty fun...
-
in that case then it would most probably be the recording head assembly...going into service mode of the MD itself i don't think would fix the problem if it is indeed a mechanical fault...playback seems fine so i think it's just the recording heads that are screwed up...if you know what you're doing (and want to experiment) then you could take the MD apart and see if you can fix it...my friend's old R30 had the same problem but it was because the head was misaligned so he just opened up the unit and tried to realign it himself and it worked to a certain degree until it stopped being able to record a few months later...shipping the unit back to the US would be a good idea but if the cost of repairing it far outweighs that of buying a new one i think it's better that you buy a new one...

did u try a different disc? because it could be just a faulty disc...otherwise if it happens to all of the discs you put it (which i don't think because u said it works fine with old mds) then i would've said that it would have been the head assembly that was faulty...the md cleaning is not very effective as all it does is shift dust around inside the unit near the pickup lens...and as for recording if it works fine then my guess would most probably be the disc...

u could use the Nero/SimpleBurner trick that has been posted up here...using nero to compile your tracks and save as an image on ur hdd, which with image drive (included with nero) can mount as a virtual drive, simpleburner can use that drive as if there were a compiled audio CD inserted in2 it...

u should go into your menu system (on the unit) and that should have an option/sub-menu called DISPLAY from there choose the option "1 Remain"...that should b able to allow you to c the track title continuously scroll...(i'm using my N1 as a reference)
-
if it the song title scrolls once when the song starts and then it displays the time try pressing the display button once...usualli it will allow the song title to keep scrolling on the remote...

the point that sudden has brought up is an important one since openmg and sonicstage are annoying...but 2 answer your q, yes the n1 can be used with sonicstage (i'm doing this on my laptop) and whether you want to use sonicstage over openmg is entirely up to u...sonicstage 1.5 seems to need more clicks to get things done as compared with openmg 2.2...but both do exactly the same thing (and both hav similar flaws)...

hmm...thought so...thanks for clearing this up tho...

so does that mean that the N10's and N910's (and other various models) combined Headfone/LINE OUT are also "soft" line outs???
-
if the case was made outta plastic (like those water proof camera cases) then the signal interferance would b relatively low...they usualli use high frequency radio waves for wireless remotes (since IR would b clumsy as it needs line of sight to operate) then the signal will b able to get thru to the remote easily (as radio waves aren't subjected to line of sight and pass straight thru plastic without that much loss of signal)...soo the signal would'n b a problem...as Rumz said earlier the only problem would be to make sure that the wireless remote and headfones are both water proof as well...

dont Aiwa already make those??? but newayz i think that they effectively should go under the NetMD category/section...
-
yep good choice... and i know what you mean about your old WM-D6C...i own a MZ-R2 and that was a nice unit back in those days as well...still in working condition and i hardly use it now since i own newer units...the mic input there is a convenience...for me it's good for recording lectures at uni tho i hardly do coz the slides are usually posted up on the web but for times when there is something important that they discuss and it's not on the slides, i'm happy its there so that i can connect my mic to...
-
some people rather the network walkman because of its size and weight...sure it doesn't hold as much as the ipod or isn't as "cost effective" but for them it's adequate to hold enough music to get to and from work/school/uni via public transport every day...and not that i knock the ipod or anything (i own one and i think it's great for wot it does)...
-
yep u can hook it up to a stereo and play through the speakers and use it in the car with an adapter...not having a LINE OUT and using the HEADFONE OUT means that you are more suceptable to noise at higher volumes on the headfone output...it should be relatively fine to pass thru a signal from the MD to external speakers through headfone out instead of line out...tho if u can stretch the cash it's better off that you buy one with a LINE out...if u can't buy the N710 and hack it (check the NetMD part of this forum for more details)...
-
it should be compatible with the 33EL...
-
also the N710 uses a NiMH gumstick battery instead of a single AA battery that the N510 uses...but as sudden said above what you mentioned before should be reason enough to go and get an N710 over a N510 as all of those extras stated are major benefits over the N510...

I've been using MD's since the MZ-R2 and owned various units from different brands ranging from portable players to recorders to MD decks as well as Mini HiFi systems...being a fan of the MD format since it's so versitile i've also been promoting their use for ages now...I've also own many other units such as MS Network Walkmans, SD Players and just recently the iPod...i must say convenient as these portables are due to their size (SD Player) and storage space (the iPod) it still won't replace the MD because they aren't as flexible in that they can't record from any source like MD can...

i'm not entirely sure on this one but i would say no...i havn't gotten my 11EL to work on my N10 properly...soo imo you're better off getting a 35ELK or a 33EL because both of these are made for the N10 models and would work well with your N510...
-
yes it is...u can check out some internet sites to see whether or not they stock up on either the RM-MC35ELK or the RM-MC33EL remotes...both of these remotes are backlit and are used in the Japanese (35ELK) and Australian (33EL) models of the N10...
-
ooh rite rite...well i'm taking it that you're going to rip them approx @ 320kbps...soo each song can take up about 10mb each...soo with 30gb you could fit 3000 odd songs on the 30gb harddrive of the ipod...
-
no the N710 is fine in aus...we'r not affected by euro's model...the output is still 5mW per channel here in aus...i think this would be the best outta all of them imo...it also uses a NiMH gumstick battery instead of a single AA in the case of the N707 soo u get longer battery life...
-
in the highest quality it would probably fit say 1000 odd wav files give or take??? depending on how big the wav file is (and how long your song is...i'm taking an estimate of approx 50mb per wav recorded @ 48000kHz 16bit Stereo) soo it's a lot mroe than md can store yes...tho i'm not sure about wot u mean by how much harddrive space it takes to transfer to mp3...would you care to elaborate a bit more? thanx...
-
yep the remote on that model should be backlit...ask him to take a picture of the remote or something coz it could've been swapped with another similar designed one but without the backlight...
-
yup there r 3.5mm -> 3.5mm stereo cables that you can buy from many electronic shops and they keep the recording in stereo...if your player should have a LINE OUT function i would suggest that u use it...it would get the best results (LINE OUT -> LINE IN) rather than going from HEADFONE -> MIC IN/LINE IN...

MD players and recorders don't have an OPTIC output (the only recorder that i know of that has an OPTIC out is the very first model : MZ-R1)...recorders only have and OPTIC input and so you can't really do a digital copy since neither the player or recorder has and OPTIC output...soo i spose that you're stuck with the normal 3.5mm stereo cable and analogue recordings...i'm gathering that you have sony units and as such the usual cable that they supply you with in the box is a square to mini toslink cable...they'r primarily used for copying from a desk/entertainment unit/audigy drive (fits the square part of the cable) to the md recorder (mini jack)....a deck is another alternative for digital recordings tho...
