Have a Hi-MD question that doesn't need a thread? [part II]
The_Stamp replied to Christopher's topic in Minidisc
I tried taking hi-md music data from hi-mds... it wont play unless the mdata is put back on the same disk. if your talking about the atrac3 files (omg) that SS2 creates, there is a backup utility that will let you back your files to a hard drive. if you wawnt to include your hi-md files, you will want to upload them your computer before running the utility. -

welcome! 1. Rip wav files into my choice of HiMD format using sonicstage. yes, but only in atrac3(plus). PCM will be available in SS2.1. 2. Store and copy the HiMD music files as I wish, with no limitations, the same as I could with an MP3 file--one full set on an external HD (as data, not playable music), another archived set on DVD or CD's (as data, not playable music), my faves on my laptop, etc. in a sense, yes. there are now unlimited checkouts (no more 3 checkouts pre mp3). when its inported into sonicstage, its stuck in sonicstage, (DRM) minidisc, or any atrac3 portable device. BUT, you can burn strac3 songs into a cd (PCM format) using iceedtea's instraller of SS2. you can back music files via SS backup utility. 1. Using the software, create mixes of my favorite music without restrictions on how many times I use any particular HiMD music file. 2. Download these mixes to MD's at super-high speeds. 1, 2: YES 1. Use the software to quickly and easily add or delete HiMD music files to any HiMD formatted disc. YES hope this is helpful. the first #2 could be a little more specific tho -
i noticed that the MD needs to be plugged in while recording via mic. was this required for the net-md?

DO NOT USE TO COVER THE LCD DISPLAY! it may solve the problem then, but the glue will stick later! i tied to take it off, and there was glue evrywher on it! took me a good 30 minutes to get it sparkly clean again. now i use a PDA cover. (cut into the shape of course). -
yopu should plug it in to the outlet when its plugged into the computer.

theres a reason theres a second edition. first edition hardly supports any usb devices. you'll need at least second edition.

never thought about the glue discoloring the plastic. i should go buy a cover. -
thats not right... ove carried an md with a magnet before through school (to prove a point to my physics teacher ) then it played just as well as ever. this was a powerful magnet too. maybe the materials of your magnet has a super strong effect in a very short radius, strong rough to corrupt your data.

ok, i just got my 600, i put it in my pocket for the trip home, and now theres some scratches on the display. why? because as dumb as the sony engineers are, the display cover plastic is sticking right out!! now, does anyone here know anything transparent that could cover up the display to prevent further scratching? -
only 110 canadian. being a composer, i thought it was worth every penny. even has a firewire, and the best sound i've ever heard. the soundfont capability is a great addition.

Before i start, i would like to say im sorry to those (about 12 people) who came into the sony store before me and asked for the hi-md, but couldn't get it because I RESERVED IT, YEA BABY, I PUT SOME CASH DOWN TO MAKE IT SO I HAVE IT BEFORE YOU! HOOOAAA! only 2 ppl actually reserved it. me and some other smart person         anyways..., in explorer, a 10 mb mp3 (american pie) was clocked at about 13.5 seconds. i was a little disheartened, until i fired up sonicstage. im currently using a 2.8 ghz P4 HT with 768 ram, 200 gb HD space, with sonicstage given highest priority, AND THE PREVIOUS SONG IS TRANSFERED BEFORE THE NEXT SONG IS HALF DONE!!!! with my old md (510) the conversions finish WAY before the transfer is finished. Its as if my computer is too slow for it! before: (std) conversion: 7 seconds transfer: 12 secocds new (hi-md) conversion: 7 seconds transfer: 3 SECONDS so, as you can see, there is a significant jump is transfer speed. Deletes SUPER fast as well. The sound quality is about the same as an 510, if not better, because of the 5 band eq. a lil slow on the startup. but one major negative i found with this is the rotating dial. it feels dry, and is a bit awkward and hard to use. Also, as soon as i got home and pulled it out of my coat pocket (i opened it up in the store, all the employees gathered around and we used for a while until the computer came back online), there we some scratches on the LCD display ALREADY. i hope it doesn't get worse. but i should give the lcd display a good coating of plastic film for good measure . when purchasing electroncs, i always keep a watch out for openings for dust, and tall buttons. the 600 is really bad for both. i can see inside between the middle dial button, and the dial area is shaped like a bowl from god. (holy bowl, get it? ). so im thinking that cleaning that area will be a must. i think it took longer for canada because they had to test it out and relabel the thing. when playing back , the sound quality is exacly the same. its as if its recorded different to enable digital playback. when your transfering files via sonicstage, it really doesn't like it if you press the stop button in SS2. it doesn't crash or anything, butit takes the hi-md about 15-20 seconds to get orientated again. btw, im never going to use that download button. SS2 all they way . you can go through the menus while the minidisc slowly (takes 10 seconds) loads the dissc, which is nice. finally, multitasking minidisc CPUs! works fine with my rm mc11el, all functions are intact, except for the sound button. instead of switching sound1->sound2->off, it just goes sound1(or 2, whichever you had it set to)->off. when you pause on the hi-md, it fades out, (about a 33ms fade), I've kinda wanted this. i bet sony got it off of winamp 5 . p.s. hey, this poll is for canadians, but sure! we'll take in any americans!

my 600 came in today! i would like to announce that i am the first person to claim this in canada! (i'll be picking it up after work). i reserved my copy, and only 2 came into the store. wow, popular. most likely i'll return it wen the 800 comes out . just to carry me over and keep me busy

Have a Hi-MD question that doesn't need a thread?
The_Stamp replied to Christopher's topic in Minidisc
1: no, it has a High definition amp. its increases clarity in the sound. only the 800 has the radio at this point. 2. the 900 has a gumstick battery slot. you can screw on an external battery case, which can hold any kind of battery (AA), whether it be Li-Ion, ni-mh or alkaline. 3. it is the same for all units. the bottleneck occurs at the writing head. 4. no one else in on board with the hi-mds. im not sure about std-mds tho. -
i use a midi composer program. i let them play out (using the midi samples selected by me) and i set my soundcard to record what i hear. i dont use midi converters because, like you said, it turns out crappy.
-
no, unfortunately, myself, being a midi composer, have to transfer my midis to mp3. why would you want to play your midi on MD anywho? i would suppose that the quality would be sub-standard IMO. i use my sound blaster audigy 2 to play the midi out (with custome GM banks, of course), and i record it to mp3. from there i import it to SS2. if there are midis you want me to convert to good mp3's, just private message me .

i HAVE successfully burnt atrac format music into uncompressed CD format. (i was curious too), but i never tried ripping it again. i am about 70% sure you could do it.
