Have a Hi-MD question that doesn't need a thread?
The_Stamp replied to Christopher's topic in Minidisc
i think the question in question is this: can you listen to what you are recording? the answer is yes. when you have the minidisc set for line-in record you will be able to listen to what is being recorded from the earphone jack. (ya, so you can hear what is being recorded, and if you hear distorion, it would be time to turn down the recording level) as for which md can do this: all of them except downloaders. i hope that this will resolve any issues. edit: 50th post! im an amateur now! (even tho i give out some intriguing stuff and helpful help about minidisc. oh well. its just a name  ) -
using a 510, with sony MDR-35 (quiet you, its good enough quality for me) bus: 17-22 night: 12-17 small pressurized cabin airplane: 22-25 right now - 20 i try to keep it at 20. lots of bass without the high pitches (distort guitar, etc) intruding into the bass decreaser circuit. btw, using my MDR-35's, would it be worth it to get the 900 with the HD amp? or should i stick with the 800/700? (im noble to these earphones, cheap yet good quality. if i lose them (which i did twice now) i wont go bankrupt buy a new pair. )

That would (mostly) be because the HI-MD player is constantly writing to the disk when you are listening to music on it (it enlarges a layer on the disk so it could be seen by the laser). That might explain part of the battery life loss. -

to resolve that issue i encode my mp3's in 192 kbps. that way, when i do LP2 in the MD, the quality loss wouldn't be nearly as bad, because you would be stepping down the bitrate. (if you encoded at 128kbps, you would be stepping up, which is a no-no, in my books of quality) my 2 cents. -
Some Sony Hi-MD units delayed in US till late July.

here here! me too. that would eliminate having multiple databases of your songs (mp3 and atrac3) as well. if the clie can do it, why not the minidisc? -
but... aren't you a dinosaur? dont you have, like, hooves or something? what ARE they called? but ya. i believe that all MD's will be able to sort songs into tracks (probably 200) and the higher ones (900, h1) will be able to program the order of playback of groups. but i don't rally see a benefit in this, as you can set the order already (on an md). not a big deal to me.

the 800 here, because i (sometimes) get bored with my music, and require some fresh stuff (i listen to techno/ambient/new age, so stuff comes out rarley, and the selection (of my specific preference (even tho i like all kinds of music (except for hard metal (except for Rob Zombie's "Time to die" (in fact i made (in my head) a full animated sequence of an army fighting off a water-type alien species (thay all died in the end (yes, this is the 7th embedded bracket))))))) doesn't come out as often as i'd like to (while keeping its originality, not getting to the boring, repetitive dance crap (in my opinion)). so ya. impressive sentence-work eh? (yes, im canadian)

ya, it being held back 3-4 months is amazing. maybe their 605/805/905 model may be out a couple months before the these models come out. man, i was holding out for the next years' models, but with the depressing news, i might just get this years' if they plan to release next years' in next june/july. wow. way to make the deadline sony! On the other hand, sony may be taking another direction. perhaps they held back the models and disks until they got most of the bugs out. if this is true, then i say "good for you!" (or they could have secretly implemented mp3 capability. or a sneaky engineer put it in, and they had to recall them, taking it out) another that really ticks me off the the "strategy" of the release of the hi-mds! "LIMITED SUPPLY?" thats BS for "we don't have enough". "online strategy?" whats that? are they going to be using to be restricting people to using their website? Only stocking few disks in store? i bet they don't know if this new HI-MD will fly, so they will do the old "we'll make it if we need it" crap technique. One things for sure tho. if i DO end up purchasing this years' model (900 or 800) i would wait a while to see if the bugginess is worth it. my 2 cents (and hard earned too) -
doclloyd: theres an option while installing to merge your old database into the new one. just to make sure, yoiu might want to make a backup, using sony's backup tool. anywho, with this new "onnect" service, how would i go about using that with iceedtea's build of SS2? EDIT: i just installed the new connect version of SS2 ON TOP of iceedteas' build. it didn't prompt me for the location (except for the database to convert). when i rebooted, it converted the database, and i still have the option to record to cd! hooray! (i never tested it tho)
-
What are the benefits of installing the OFFICAL SS2 instead of using iceedtea's build? i realize the CD writing functionality tha the official one lacks, but is there anything the the official one has that iceedteas' doesn't? thx (PS: nice, cute message of the all caps, came up when i was on the OFFICIAL word, nice touch, kurisu!! )

maybe there's a driver issue, and you would now have to carry a mini-cd with the hi-md driver on it (defeats the purpose) thats my guess. it doesn't matter to me anyway anymore, cause i got a sj33 clie to carry me over until the 2nd generation hi-md (so they can fix the bugs)

my sony store said early june a while ago

ooooh, be careful! Having 20 GB of sole atrac3? bad idea! i just performed a test when i reformatted my computer-- I took an atrac3 from my computer, and put it onto my other hard drive, so i can reformat my OS one (one media 120GB, one OS 80GB  )then i tried playing that atrac3. "Houston, we have a problem" That's right, the atrac3 wouldn't play! that file had copyright info that didn't match the computer, even tho im using a legit key, and the key is the same too! So, Be careful Leland, because if Windows goes down, its taking ALL your atrac3's down with it! What I do is have them all in mp3 on my media drive, then convert them to atrac3 when needed (to put it on my clie / minidisc).

since mp3 uses a different kind of compression, i use the LP2. I too use 192kbps for mp3's, and i find the LP2 does it justice very well. When i get the Hi-MD, i will be using the LP2 because: a) i've always been using LP2 for my 192's 16 hours!!! on a hi-md c) its proven that Atrac3(plus) has a higher quality (by far) compared to mp3 at the same bitrate. my two cents. edit: the remote has the radio completely built in. Kurisu: nice touch with the amount of words! tells users how useful the user in question actually is (well, unless he/she has been typing words like a,s,d,g,r,s,,q,s,c c c d d w df , like i just did )

The sony store in winnipeg said to me (since i have special information priviledges  ) JUNE or MAY. dumb, i know. and i was going to preorder it.
-
the folks at the sony store told me that the hi-md would come out in EARLY april!! this could mean within the first 2 weeks of april!, which means no more that 3 weeks!
-
Guess what! I talked to my Sony Stores friends (yes friends. I told them all then new features/science of the new hi-md, got them hyped up, and they now tell me all their secrets. mwahaha. ahem.) and they told me that they we be receiveing their "regular shipment" of minidiscs/players. im guessing that those are the 520's. perhaps even the hi mds!

with the new sonicstage, you may now be able to merge and cut each track the way you like it (unlike the old sonicstage, 1.5 where you could only do that with wav files ). yes i know that your unable to delete, cut, ,and merge tracks with the *10s and down, but without the check-out limit (thanks to the music society being more lenient on copyrights  ) perhaps you may be able to cut, merge, and delete downloaded tracks (via usb!) with the new himd's! only time will tell my friend. -

yup, and the nh10 has a full magnesium body, unlike the 900, which has a partial (or none) magnesium. but ya, i agree with you, if i lose the remote, im screwed. -
Well Looky Looky! the new site (of 3/14/04) says that the 900 will have a HD digital amp! i checked (and compared) to see if there ws a difference (of ampage) between the two, and they have the same amp (says the uro version of sony) that puts an end to this thread!

After looking at the pic of the 800 (for the billionth time), im starting to think the the entire AM/FM radio chipset is in the remote! Like, after looking at the other models, them having small and sleek remotes, along comes the 800, having a massive remote!! perhaps i could plug that remote into any sony walkman, and give that player radio capability. Like, geez man! looks like a freaking "Action" pen, with a gizmo in it.
-
omg, the entire time, i was comparing the 800 and the 900. i had the 900 pictured in my mind, but for SOME REASON i was thinking n1. im reeeally sorry if this confused anyone :wacky: :wacky: :wacky:
-
ok, to clear things up, i was comparing the 800 against the 900. I changed the title and first post to reflect this, but i can't fix the poll Will do, thx a lot! i never factored that in!

OOPS MY MAJOR BAD!!!! I meant the 900!!!! 900!!! is the 900 Worth it!! aargh
