  1. I get very good results under a really thin, light linen shirt. Mics can be clipped to an undershirt. One way to test the affect of using a shirt is to listen to your stereo and pull the shirt over your ears. I think you'll notice that there isn't much sound lost in a pourous shirt.
  2. Tight!!! Can this preamp be powered with AC power? Do you notice a big difference in sound quality with this set-up as oppposed to when the mics were receiving only 9V? Thanks...thinking of getting one, too...
  3. Thanks everyone... I was thinking more about it, and yeah, it must have been the anti-shock buffer...thanks Dex. I play American Classical Music (more commonly known by it's derogatory label: Jazz)
  4. OK, so I'm heading out on my lunch break at work today. I grab my NH1 and take out the disc I was listening to which was a recording of my gig last night. I pop in a different disc of a live recording of a concert by my favorite musician. Needless to say, it is a highly valued disc. I'm riding down in the elevator and press play. All of a sudden I hear the beginning of the disc that I just took out!?! Even scarier is the fact that it's my voice (I stated the recording settings into the mic before the performance started). I pressed stop and ejected the disc, reinserted and pressed play. It played correctly this time...phew. Has this ever happened to anyone? The only explanation I can gather is that the 1st disc was stored in some buffer of some sort...but I don't know the science behind it. Some backround info to help solve the mystery: 1. The 1st disc was a classic MD recorded in Hi-SP 2. The 2nd disc was a Hi-MD recorded in PCM. 3. I was sober
  5. The added voltage should only increase the performance of the mics. I haven't used 'in ear' binaurals, but have used regular binaural mics on clips. They were Core-sound's Low cost binaurals (which I believe use the same Panasonic capsules as SP's binaurals): http://www.core-sound.com/mics/1.php Then I upgraded to an older version of these (see the description of these mics for a good answer to your 10V question): http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/item/SP-CMC-9 Oh, and I don't think u need an attenuator - that's only for old Sony MD recorders that didn't have mic sensitivity 'Hi' and 'Low' options. Also, don't need it if going 'Line In' with battery module.
  6. These models are much smaller. I use the SPSB-6 (the other one wasn't out at the time) http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/.../item/SP-SPSB-6 http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/.../item/SP-SPSB-9 I have bass roll-off on mine but always use the lowest setting possible. I plan on ordering it without a bass roll off soon. Also, I would advise some trial runs at home recording from your stereo. Practice setting the levels and going through the menu's as A440 stated above. This can be difficult once the adrenaline starts pumping and the spliffs start burning pre-show. Good luck.
  7. Where can I get one of these? The audiocubes website only shows silver...
  8. What's wrong with using the Hi-MD's A/D converter? Is it inferior to the external A/D converters mentioned earlier in the thread?
  9. The CES link has January dates. Do we have to wait 'til January 2006 to find MD's fate?
  10. Syrius, Does SS 3.2 freeze the data on the disk after uploading? Can you still edit the disk after uploading?
  11. even when you click on the transfer menu? Under the pull down, you should see Hi-MD as one of the options. From there you can upload or just hit play and digitally record it with Total Recorder or Audacity (see pinned topics)
  12. WAIT!!! Not a bug, but major inconvenience: When pressing record (or pause record), the unit should assume the last settings from when stop was pressed. It really sucks to have to go into menu, rec set, manual rec, and reset the levels every freakin time! Am I too late?
  13. Sorry I'm not familiar with the terminology used in the last few posts, but is it possible to upload and still edit the disk?
  14. Thanks LupinIV! One more question: I understand that we can now upload multiple times, but does it still freeze the disc from being edited after uploading?
  15. Does SS 3.2 pause between tracks when playing from the HiMD like previous versions?
  16. Anyone have good advice for adding gain to a live recording? Most of my recordings are done line in with a battery module and need to be louder. I usually play the recording in SS 3.1 and record with Total Recorder as a safety measure before uploading. I think TR can add gain...
  17. Although we love to slam Sony's restrictive tendencies, I think this time the ability only to upload to a MAC may have been an Apple idea. Download capability would infringe (although probably a miniscule amount) on iPod sales. As it's set up now, Sony keeps their Atrac, Apple maintains download/player dominance.
  18. Maybe once the software is released, it can be hacked to work for 1st gen's and Hi-SP.
  19. For non-stealth, I use a Rode NT4. Very good results have been had.
  20. Does this mean that the only big change since 1st generation is the ability for SonicStage to convert to MP3?
  21. + for line in: 1. handles transients better (i.e. sudden increase in volume) 2. doesn't add as much noise to the signal + for mic in: 1. can record at levels that allow for louder playback, but risk clipping or distortion. There are other factors to consider, these are just some of the things I've noticed lately. See SoundPro's FAQ. Oh, and you know you need a battery module for line in, right?
  22. Would this scenario work: Record concert with NH1. Use Buffalo product to upload concert to Mac? Also, what is the storage capacity of the storage drive? Or am I missing the point...that it's more like an external drive for the PC than a storage drive?
  23. please post their respsonse... cheers, mate!
  24. I believe this is misinformation on Ebay. In the early stages of HiMD, it was rumored (or maybe even stated by Sony, can't remember exactly), that the stand would act as the link to the PC as well as the charger. But this was later cleared up by Sony. The stand is only a charger AND the only way to charge the NH1. A separate cable is supplied to link to PC. Also, it is my understanding that this cable powers the NH1 from the USB port, but does not charge it. I am hoping someone makes a charging plug that bypass the stand soon...
