  1. Guessing would be if there was no evidence to back it up. However you can see with your own eyes that few places on the web or your local stores are carrying HiMD devices anymore. You know if you go in and ask, and from reports here and across the web. That stores that do have low stock have been told they will not get any more stock, or that they expect to get no more. HiMD is disappearing out of retail. On the opposite side you have no evidence at all they they are still making them or that there will be a new model. I'm not saying 100% there won't. Just that theres no evidence to back that opinion up.
  2. I agree with Superboy. I like MD/HiMD have used it for years, but my use now is mainly recording. Many here are too in love with the format to realise its flaws and the good points of other formats because it not something they themselves want. But that doesn't mean those features are not desirable to others or of value in themselves. If I had something like the NW-800 series but that could record like HiMD that would along the lines of my ideal hybrid. Oh and FM Radio.
  3. How many active members are their that post more than 5 times a months. The forum activity does not reflect 59,000 users.
  4. I think the main failing when discussing formats, is people only see it from the point of view of their own requirements and dislikes. They can't stand back and look at other users point of view. They can't see the flaws in the format they use, or advantages of a different format fdor someone else. Unless someone makes that realisation, theres little point in discussing a formats with them.
  5. No new models this year, current stock not being renewed once its gone. Availability of RH1 is all but gone.
  6. The suggestion is that is not meant to work that way, but its a bug that not been fixed. A year or more back there were a few threads on this and someone did some tests. I can't find them now but I do remember someone testing it at the time. I remember asking about it when 4.2 and 4.3 were released was this fixed but noone knew. Someone posted that one Sony Flash player supported it. Since then we've seen Sony drop ATRAC on devices like B100, and some seen some new iPod related products. But nothing more about ATRAC Lossless. I can't imagine its got a future myself.
  7. My undersntading is as follows. I could be wrong, so correct me if so. AFAIK there used to be a bug with it, dunno if its still there. Perhaps the bug as been fixed. Say you record AAL 64kbps. It records two parts. All in the one file. {(Part 1- Lossless) + (Part 2 - 64kbps)} If you play it on the PC it plays part 1. Lossless. You can only play lossless on the PC nothing else can play it. If you transfer it to HiMD as 64 kps it transfers (part 2. 64kbps) without re-ripping it. Result 64kbps. If you transfer it to HiMD as 132 kps it transfers part 2. 64kbps. it transcodes it to 132kbps Result dire quality. If you transfer it to HiMD as 256 kps it transfers (part 2. 64kbps). it transcodes it to 256kbps Result dire quality. If you transfer it to HiMD as 356 kps it transfers (part 2. 64kbps) it transcodes it to 354kbps. Result dire quality. So basically its usless, because it transcodes the lossy part when you pick a rate other than lossless or 64k to transfer.
  8. Because its useless for HiMD users and other Sony Devices. Though I've seen some comments that you can use it on some of the Sony NW-S700 players. Dunno how true that is. I like to know about the NW-A800. You would have to use SS as your main application for managing your library, if you used AAL. Personally I wouldn't risk it. Besides FLAC is a more useful format for archival.
  9. I came to the same conclusion and standardised on higher rate MP3 for my library. The only thing to consider is if you improve the quality of your gear in the future perhaps then you would notice the difference in quality. But my thinking on that is, if I end up in that happy situation I'd be happy to re-rip my music to higher quality. Its a compromise that I'm happy with for the now. My focus has switched to getting better versions of my favorite music. I've been checking these places... http://www.head-fi.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=13 http://store.acousticsounds.com/
  10. Only the RH1, or M200 can upload legacy SP recordings. Sounds perfect for you.
  11. Is there any difference with the Mac software or anything?
  12. I don't get that. If theres no more HiMD being made theres nothing to protect.
  13. I what noise pollution you can hear is. I just can't think of an example we can't hear.
  14. Theres a few RH1 in our Sony shops but its too dear for me. €369. Thats about $510 US. Especially as I'm not so crazy about some of the RH1 features. If I find a cheap HiMD 2nd hand I'll get another one. Otherwise I'll probably have to find another way to record. 2nd prices for MD, NetMD and HiMD have always been too high here. Hard to pick up a deal.
  15. The lyrics in general mean nothing to me. I don't remember lyrics, or usually hear them. I've always been far more interested in the music than the song. Probably because I play music but can't sing a note. So theres that, and it was overplayed at the time. Ditto their later stuff. Across their later albums I like the odd song, but wouldn't be a fan of the later albums in general. Maybe the politics make more sense from a US perspective. I'm reminded of some graffiti you used to see a lot. "The problem with God is he thinks hes Bono". To think of it, I listen to a lot of stuff that I don't know the language. Never really bothered me I didn't know the lyrics. Its probably woeful stuff.
  16. I'm only expressing an opinion. I'm not saying or denying that they don't exist, just that its not the norm that I've experienced. However a lot of MiniDisc'ers seem to have drives failing constantly! Bit like how on other forums people seem to have no end of issue with MD and SS, which is something I haven't experience either. In my own experience, I'm more likely to find a situation of someone who hasn't backed up their data in a couple of years, (one guy 7 years) than someone with a disc thats failed. I do see disk failures, but tbh they tend to be brand new disks that fail within a month or two of getting them, rather than drives that have been up for a year or so. My oldest drive at home is in a Quadra 800, 230mb SCSI. Must be 14yrs old. Still used for the kids. Yeah and I know older drives especially SCSI were better built and thats a fair comment. I just don't see what I'd consider high failure rates. I've only got about 6 drives at home, only one of them is less than 2yrs old. 4 of them are externals and much abused carting them between locations. I agree with you point(s) about all things are not made equal. Which why I would avoid buying all the same model or brand drives and where I can, mix them up. My own experience is that you tend to get a bad batch rather than any specific use case that creates failures more frequently than another. I avoid certain brands though. I'd probably see slightly higher rates than this guy, but close enough... http://www.allthingsdistributed.com/2007/0...f_hard_dis.html
  17. The early stuff I like. From the Joshua Tedium onwards I was bored. The last album seemed like it might a return closer to their original vigor. Didn't buy it though.
  18. Yeah but your bothered by that as you can hear it. Being bothered by Lossy Audio would be being bothered by something you can't hear. Its like those teenager deterrents http://www.compoundsecurity.co.uk/deterrent_news_1.html
  19. Glad to hear your not alone where you live. Maybe buy better disks? Thats terrible rate.
  20. LOL BOFH. Any other random SOP you'd like to share?
  21. So thats no. Or Lossy audio is Noise pollution. I'm not entirely sure. What do you mean by Noise pollution?
  22. has the health effect of lossy audio been studied at all even lightly.
