  1. it depends... the 1st gen HiMD can be unhacked (the software limiter can be turned off) but not entirely (there are some resistors in there that lower the output (so hardware limited) as far as I know the 2nd gen HiMD doesn't have this hardware part and should be completely hackable (well, we've found the hack and it seems to work) and the RH1 will be hackable as well, once someone gets a look at the service manual ...but really, - get yourselves some decent phones that lock out external sound (in-ear type) and even an unhacked NH900 is more than loud enough even in noisy environments - respect your ears, you've only got one pair and if you need to raise volume above 'normal levels' to hear anything, you should just get out of there as it is too noisy anyway... killing noise with louder stuff is not the way to go
  2. thanks dex... this is really one of the main reasons I keep coming back to MDCF and keep pointing ppl this way! I'm still learning (and my recordings are still open for improvement) but thanks to you, greenmachine and A440 (mainly) at least my mistakes now have very little to do with 'abusing' my equipment (darn that sounded rancy... sorry ) as a request for a future contribution (perhaps for a coop between you three rec-gurus ) I would be interested in a simple lesson on auditive/visual 'reading' of a venues accoutsics (i.e. what's most important to look/listen for when choosing a spot) and perhaps some guidelines for a couple of 'frequent cases' (i.e. the small and always too loud club, the open air festival,...) yes, I know there isn't any way to tell something accurate about a location you don't know, but some generalities like when to aim for a bit of distance and a nice stereo effect, when to 'hug the speakers' and go for a clean but mono sound, etc... just some case descriptions from your experience so we slowly learn to look/isten for the right things at our local venues... still, only a suggestion and this contribution is already very highly appreciated!
  3. I'm currently actually doing nothing useful at all... delivered my presentation this morning (a deadline for work) and I got up at 6am (after about 4hours of sleep) to finish it in time. Now I'm clearing my desk a bit and I will go and sit in the nice sun (25°C) in a minute ah, the next deadline is still miles away... only Monday
  4. as it plugs directly into the mic jack (no cable) this mic will give a lot of machine noise if you are planning to use it on a (Hi)MD (or any other recorder with moving parts)
  5. worked till 23.30 (11.30pm) last night to get my stuff finished before the deadline... now I'm a bit dozy and slowly starting my day with a bit of catching up on MDCF-posts before I jump into a higher gear again for the next deadline (Thursday)
  6. first... upgrade to SS3.4, it really is better second, some programs/rippers do not follow the ID3 tag rules very strict and this can cause conflicts with other programs third, if you want to get good support, please provide us with full info (system specs , service packs, etc...) but also a very thorough description of the problem: - does it keep the names - what does the info/properties screen look like in SS for the problem files - do all MP3 files do this? if not, which ones do (created with which program or coming from the net,...) - what did the tags look like in another app privide screenshots if necessary (to difficult to explain otherwise) etc etc remember: you can't give too much info
  7. I like good omni stereo mics (separable preferably) like the SoundPro BMC2's (or higher quality) or the mics greenmachine (a member here) sells I personally have no experience with sennheiser mics, but perhaps someone else has and will answer your question even further
  8. try to comment a bit more... what do you want to record (voice/music, what type of music), where (indoor/outdoor), stereo/mono,... it's very difficult to help on such little info
  9. it has been very cold here until last tuesday, when temps suddenly went up 15°C... now it's a nice 25°C but actually I hate that cause: - it won't last, starting tomorrow they predict showers & thunder - I can't enjoy it as I'm working against a deadline (well, not right now as I'm posting here, but gimme a break... I've been working all day already )
  10. happy b-day bland... keep showing us those nice Japanese gadgets from time to time
  11. actually doing a couple of things at the same time: - writing a literature review (deadline this monday) for the research project I'm currently working on so this means: reading articles, annotating (on my powerbook) and keeping notes on interesting overall topics (on my secondary screen) - email conversation with my friends (they are leaving in a couple of hours for a weekend I was supposed to be at as well, but which won't be the case because of the deadline this monday ) - listening to my own live recording of '65 days of static', 'mogwai' & 'EITS' to ease the pain - having small outdoor (it's 25°C and very sunny euh ) coffee breaks with my collegues
  12. check out the binaural omni mics from SoundProfessionals... they do offer great quality and with separable small (= stealthy) stereo mics mounted (on glasses) near your ears you get the best/most realistic stereo picture for instument recording, just set them up with a pillow inbetween so you have the same nice stereo separation for your own peformance
  13. centaur (well comes pretty close to a cow-boy IMHO )
  14. only the RH1 will be able to transfer those not-HiMD recordings to PC... search these forums (the news section) for more info on that model
  15. which shop in Brussels Ysl? I'm in Brussels as well and I really could use a bit of shopping to help me get through these rotten days (deadlines just as we finally have some good weather!!)
  16. you sure they didn't refer to the RH10? as the no-LCD remote and silver as standard color reminds me much more of the RH10 than of the RH1 (as far as I know the RH1 would be launched everywhere with the stick LCD remote and with black as standard color)
  17. use Marcnet's HiMDRenderer (can be found in the downloads section) to convert directly to MP3... Atrac won't work on mac
  18. well, that's exactly why there will be options... so everyone can find something they like
  19. still the RH1 is more practical for stealth recording IMHO: - remembers manual setting - has that great OLED on the side so if you can spare the money and want to go for the top model... go RH1 still they are right, the NH700/800 are very good as well
  20. this is exactly why I didn't feel sorry for copying big-label cd's as a student... it is NOT stealing from the artist, as the company already did that part... it is stealing from a thief I did pay for my concert tickets, so I actually did pay te artist with local bands and indies etc I always bought the real stuff PS: nowadays I'm working and I simply buy the cd's I want
  21. again A440 saves the day no really, that is some good advice there, but perhaps $300 for the RH1 is a bit hopeful (still going for a 'bit' more, but price will drop with the international releases) also, if you have some soldering skills, be sure to check greenmachine's DIY mic and battery-box project (the link is in my signature) as this gives you mics of equal to more than BMC2 quality for ... well, almost no money really I have recorded some great stuff with them as well (also really loud sh*t like 'the bloodbrothers' and 'mogwai'...)
  22. I voted black... stealthier than silver and the uniform color just looks better IMHO @whatsleftofj: it has already been confirmed... just read the thorough review by Mark (MDFreak) and Rich(yu) over on MDcenter.nl (the direct link can be found in the news section)
  23. search these forums for 'omgjbox' as this error has been addressed often before
  24. I personally upload the recording to SS, convert to wav, edit in audacity (if needed) and note where the trackmarks should be, create cuesheet with trackmarks (a cuesheet keeps everything gapless, while really splitting often causes slight gaps)... but this is a bit of work I know SS offers the 'combine' function and I thought there was some sort of 'split tracks' function as well, but I haven't used it yet... record something unimportant and have a play with different strategies and see what works for you
  25. sparda... have you read the review? please do as your question is answered already (btw, no it doesn't if you mean track title etc.)
