  1. about the "useless" A3+ modes... there are some other Sony DAP's that can handle those bitrates, but ineed, HiMD is limited to (as far as A3+ is concerned) HiLP (48kbps), HiSP (256kbps) and since SS3.3 also 352 kbps atrac3+... which is very strange as it is a completely new bitrate option which works for 1st and 2nd gen HiMD without any firmware updates or anything, but in which you (unfortunately) cannot record yourself... if you do not see 352 when importing CD's, do not worry... that's Sony's logic again. You cant' import CD's into SS in 352, but you can convert wav->352 (so just rip your CD's with EAC, import the wav's into SS, convert to 352 and delete the wavs again...very simple or better 'the Sony way of things' )
  2. without wanting you to open one up... but do you know whether the discs themselves show any special marks or are they rather quite plain except for the special wrappers?
  3. sparks... don't get me wrong, I don't really get tired of newby posts (quite a number I have and will still answer to the best of my knowledge...I really enjoy helping ppl out), as long as I am allowed to answer "search/read the faq's" when needed (for some questions that simply is the best answer)... I think it would overly complicate things if we limited ppl to a newby forum, that would be restrictive/unwelcoming IMHO this thread (and my posts) weren't anti-newby at all... it all started with the remark that the general tone was hostile towards newbies... and that is just something I do not agree with... but mods... as I said before, the guidelines actually cover all that is being said here so IMHO, no need for this thread to trail on PS: maybe we should simply answer all redundant/overly general questions with a link to the forum guidelines
  4. I do agree with blu on the different ways one can use a forum... for info retrieval: please ppl... just read the stickies/faq's first, then search, then post a question if you still didn't find an answer (as stated in the MDCF guidelines...or are these rude as well? ) Ppl please realize, noone and I repeat noone is trying to stop ppl posting questions!! That really is not the point...I personally welcome them, as other ppl's questions have often made me think different about my own situation, that's why I read every new post...but the instant-"search first/read the stickies"-reaction mostly pops up when the poster clearly hasn't tried any of the aforementioned methods and the question can easily be answered by any of the above options prior to posting yet another question... for friendship/discussion/time wasting: do not get me wrong... I think these are all very useful applications of a forum (I know I spend way more time overhere than needed for info retrieval) but there is a place/time/method for this: i.e. this is more likely to be tolerated in the "off-topic"-section and it really doesn't have to revolve around MD (that's why they call it off-topic I guess ). Posting an overly general, answered kazillion times before question in one of the subforums... just to get ppl to talk to you isn't the best way to go IMHO Again, this does not mean that there should be no discussion in other subfora according to me...not at all. But let's try to keep it focussed a bit... what use is it if the same discussion is held over and over again if you can just use search and find the old one and continue it... On another note... I am getting quite tired of the "but I'm a poor newby and I don't really know how to behave on a forum, so just allow me to do whatever I feel like or I'll call you rude if you try to correct my behaviour"-stuff. Yes a forum should be open and welcoming...but no this does not mean: " let everyone post wherever they want 'cause within a short time noone will want to use these forums anymore, cause even the power-posters won't be able to find any info anymore! (just start yourselves an anarchistic "no-rules" forum somewhere if you can't handle elementary rules...I'll probably drop by sometimes, if it lives long enough ) So here my plea towards all ppl calling themselves forum-newbies and that feel offended by the tone on these forums: So you would like to use these forums for info or friendship: you are utmost welcome! but please have the elementary politeness to: - read/follow the forum guidelines - read/follow the "rules" (when posting in the software section) - to observe the 'ways of the forum' for a couple of secs before throwing yourself in - to realize that ppl here are trying to help you (eventhough sometimes by correcting your behaviour, which may seem condescending) - to realize that this is exactly the same as anywhere else (on or off the net) you would enter as a newcomer... imagine yourself going to a library desk and shouting: "I want that one book about cooking" and going "hey man, don't diss me, that's rude" when the shocked librarian asks you to gather a bit more details about your request and then search for it... and if you're thinking now: "yeah a library, but do they really want to be compared to that" well, it's the same at any slightly pro-oriented store or ...well anywhere actually, even in a club/bar with habitués so no hard feelings... (well not from me at least) but we should all try our best to be polite and not rude: the mods, the power posters, the regular and infrequent posters and the newbies (but unfortunately that last group didn't read this post, so just as unfortunately the other groups will have to keep replying: "please search/read the stickies and post again with more detail if this doesn't solve your problem"
  5. well, pointing out that the question is overly general and/or that it has been answered before (when done in a polite way) IMHO is a very useful and honest way of answering... I really do not see a point in trying your best to answer such a question ... again... and by guessing what the person actually meant... I certainly would not classify that as "whipping them to death" let's keep things in perspective please... sorry, but whether you believe it or not, these are the most polite forums I personally have participated on... just try any audiophile board and ask a simple "what headphones are good for me" and see what happens! If they do not diss you immediately, they will start flaming each other fun game: just ask a slightly negative sounding question on any "considered to be very good" 'phone on one of those boards and watch the handbags swoosh through cyberspace if that didn't work, just post that you do not believe in the myth of "burning in 'phones" (BTW I do believe in it...so hold yer bags, gents)
  6. just referring to this: [attachmentid=1186] dunno if it is her body or not... but the body is A-OK in my book
  7. greg, if that is you... you've been hiding a big secret from us all no, I know, it's only a skin... but what a skin!? (and it's Belgian too...well at least the site you got it from is )
  8. I just had a bunch of mini-pancakes... great! And don't worry greg... I wiped my hand before typing... but now I have to go and wash my trousers (napkin, what napkin?)
  9. Explosions in the sky: live in the Botanique @ 14/11/2005 my own recording (of which I will try to upload a bit as it is a taper friendly band) in PCM (the original, unedited disc...it doesn't get any better than this! thanks again greenmachine for those brilliant mics!!)
  10. the best recording remote is the RM-MC40ELK as it has a three lines, backlit LCD which also (the only remote to do this) shows rec-levels... here's a bit more info and then there is always the remote guide I got mine from buyfromjapan on ebay ... very reliable, no import taxes and new in the box
  11. just a couple of thoughts on this chris: - "just to stand out from the crowd" is a bit weak to stick with (Hi)MD IMHO...there are brands of MP3 players that sell even less than (Hi)MD - "I would only buy one if Sony promises to promote the Hi-MD units" combined with the remark I quoted above doesn't really make sense... if they really promote it, it might be picked up by the crowds and get popular and you do not want that, not? - "and if they are willing to build Hi-MD players for the car" there are other options, get a radio with aux-in or use an FM-transmitter...both will sound better than a cassette-adapter so is HiMD worth it? - yes definitely if you want to record as well, as there are no real alternatives (for the same price) and it won't even matter whether Sony keeps producing them, as by the time your unit dies there probably will be an alternative - no if you just want an MP3 player... just get a player and paint it bright pink, then you will stand out from the crowd as well and won't have to deal with the peculiarities of HiMD/SS PS: using typographic stuff like caps and bold text is often interpreted like shouting on forums...I know, it makes you stand out from the puddle but just remember this, as ppl might react 'angry'
  12. oops , my bad, fishy... sorry to bother you with my dumb remark I only reread the first posts and forgot about your actions to open up Sony's vault
  13. why this post fishtyc? the program discussed in this thread isn't connected to uploading at all... it reads the structure (TOC) of a disc and turns it into a readable format so you get a list of what's on your disc...or as MrSoul said it I don't see why this would need uploading ability... it is simply a simpler way to catalogue what's on your discs but as for the original question from lingenfr... I'm afraid I dunno
  14. first let me say that I think I'm pretty polite mostly so I do not feel addressed and I agree with the general tone in this thread... well partly indeed, if someone posts a polite and specific question, we should all try to answer it as correct and polite as possible... I often try to do this to the best of my knowledge but... - sometimes ppl come here, clearly refuse to look around, post 'the most general question ever' and expect you to clear things up for them... the pinned threads/faq's/search feature have got a reason, and so have the different sections (live rec questions?... see the live rec section perhaps... don't just enter these forums in a thread in HiMD and instead of looking a bit further, just post that question in the wrong section, preferably in an existing post on a completely different topic, even though it possibly is answered a number of times already) If I can tell that someone clearly hasn't looked at all but expects us to just hand him the knowledge on a platter (again), even if they say "please do not point out to me that I'm lazy by telling me to search first, I know I am, that's why I ask this question in stead of searching" (sorry if this sounds harsh blu (and others) ... of course everyone has a right to ask instead of searching, but automaticlly calling ppl anti-social if they refuse to help is also a bit harsh IMHO), I sometimes find it hard to stay polite myself... but I have learned just not to react (not negative, but also not by answering) to such a question anymore... ...and... - please do not think/believe/impose that rudeness is limited to power-mods or power-posters only!! kurisu still asks politely every time to post system specs when another one pops up with the great post: "SS is crap and won't work. Tell me how to fix it!" sometimes followed by a "please", but just as often not ... and A440 and greenmachine (both very valuable power-posters IMHO) have more patience with newby-recordists (including me somewhere in the near past) than most of us would... while it are often the ppl that have just outgrown the "beginner" stage here on MDCF that proliferate themselves as habitués by reacting overly strong to redundant/old/wrongly posted questions (I feel I can say this, as I know I have been there myself... it is part of the process of learning to operate in a forum...but it is a stage one really needs to outgrow as it is annoying for all others) so as a plea for politeness, I can agree with this thread... but as a claim that these are unpolite forums or as a way of telling ppl off... I cannot! I think MDCF is very helpful and polite most of the time and rude behaviour (whether from simple- or power-posters and even from mods) is always reacted on by others (not in the least by kurisu) but this is mostly handled by a discrete PM informing into the nature of the bad temper of the poster in question and not by public reprimands... which I think is part of the great atmosphere overhere so yes, unfortunately rude reactions will happen... but either ask the poster through PM what's botherig him (politely as well ) or report the post if it really is over the top... but this way of accusing noone in particular and everyone at the same time is quite useless IMHO these are fun and helpful forums and let's not ruin that mood ...not with topics like this either PS: sorry for this strong reaction, but I would hate ppl to stop posting or to watch their language too much just because of this single thread PPS: mods feel free to remove this post (or this whole thread perhaps, as this is covered in the MDCF guidelines, but perhaps noone bothers to read those either ) if deemed necessary and everyone... I welcome PM's informing about my foul mood
  15. that's what I meant yeah maybe you could try some in-ear (canal) phones like the pana's RP-JE50 or etymyotic or shure e-series as they come with different "plugs" including some bigger ones so they provide good seal for most ppl and further they often sound better and are quite a bit more efficient than earbuds PS: I use the Senn MX 350's, 450's and the pana's and I must say: no competition, the pana's win on all levels, including comfort
  16. just buy some panasonic RP-JE50 in-ear headphones (or some other brand/model like that), as they come with a short cord and an extension lead of about 70-80cm, which is perfect for mic use as well for a grand total of (USD) $25 (shipping included from HK through ebay) this way you get some nice phones (if you get the pana's you will at least ) and a cheap extension
  17. sorry to hear that... limts your search quite a bit. For me most buds are unusable (pop out or hurt like hell) but the in-ear/canal-type works wonders (admittedly after some 'getting used to')! maybe the senn PX100? they are open type so won't heat up as much. they do let outside noise in and your music (with the body warmth) out...
  18. not buds but in ear like the top of the line shure and etymyotic models or even the (pretty cheap, $25) panasonic RP-JE50's (just see the link in my signature)... sony has some models as well, but after reading quite a bit I thought the pana's were more value for money
  19. it isn't the best way to go with a NiMH battery... (just read up at the www.batteryuniversity.com for more info) as it induces the memory effect (which can be restored, but it isn't the best way to go) just read the link I provided and you will understand batteries a lot better PS: sorry for the hasty/short post
  20. hm, not sure I understand completely what you mean with this question, but I'll give some quick info anyway... - there is no remote with a 'rec button', you still have to press 'rec' on the player. But this is no problem as you can press 'rec+pause', put the player on hold and later at the correct moment release hold on the remote and start recording by pressing 'play/pause' - onle remotes with an 'E' are backlit and of extra use in dark venues - AFAIK only the RM-MC40ELK (which I use in combo with my NH900) shows rec levels. Other remotes do allow you to change them, but as you cannot monitor them it is no better than doing this on touch on the player itself. - the RM-MC40ELK will only stay backlit continuously with the NH1 and NH900 (and perhaps with other 1st gen machines) but definitely not with the RH10/910. this is no big problem as one click with the scroll-wheel will light it up without changing the rec levels (be careful though, two clicks do cause a change in rec levels) - recording with a remote attached is only useful for loud(er) environments. the remote connection and mic/line in ports are too close so each renewal of screen info on the remote causes funny but irritating staticy sounds in the recording. These sounds are not distinguishable when recording rock concerts etc. so in short... if you want to record in dark venues: - you can use any model + small ledlight, but that isn't really stealthy - you can use the RH10 which OLED works wonders in a dark venue, but this also could be slightly un-stealthy - you can use any model + RM-MC40ELK (which is the ultimate rec-gadget and honestly the only useful remote for stealth rec'ing as it shows the rec levels and looks like a mobile phone screen with it's black on blue backlit LCD)
  21. ouch, a DIY-tongue piercing-thread... sorry to hear that k. but make sure you stay healthy ...eat things like soup ...and ice cream as it numbs your tongue
  22. no need to tell me it was disgusting/nasty MZ-NH1 and Greg I tasted it! but right now I'm enjoying a nice cup of coffee and a croissant (it's 10am overhere) at my desk at work... should be writing an absract for some international conference, but as breakfast is the most important meal of the day...it will have to wait
  23. ok time to finally out me as the Sony/BMG-fanboy and anti-piracy-nut I really am: [attachmentid=1179] there...now I've said it, I feel much better now PS: for the few out there who feel like me, this desktop and others can be found at http://www.firewheeldesign.com/rootkit/ PPS: for the few ppl out there taking this seriously... it's not
  24. hi and welcome to MDCF, I'm very sorry to hear about this problem... but alas it seems there still is no way to recover disc errors for future use: - editing on the machine is still pretty buggy... if you want to upload to PC afterwards, just forget about editing on the recorder at all and do all editing on PC afterwards (with the free audacity for example) - if you don't need to upload, and want to edit on the machine, make sure you save a lot inbetween (by pressing stop and letting the recorder write things to the toc) search for a pinned post by dex Otaku (called "the one safe way of uploading" or something, sorry, I don't recall correctly) in the live recording section which explains the safest way of uploading recordings
  25. thanks all... I really think it is funny to see where everyone lives and now I've made a MDCF folder in GE in which I stored all the locations mentioned here so I can take the tour
