  1. thanks to greenmachine's insights my new fav eq'ing is now [0 -1 -1 -1 -1 -1] as this gives a bit more bass and a warm/full sound... great!!
  2. obligatory literature on this topic...thanks to greenmachine's uncessant curiosity
  3. I was on 0,0,-1,-2,-2,-1 (as I felt the mids/lower highs were a bit overaccentuated with the pana's) but in fact with 0,-1,-1,-1,-1,-1 it does sound less bloated and still very warm/full...thanks again ye green master ! I do have to use volume 19-20/30 now in stead of the 15-16/30 I used to...so like I said, this method could fail for less efficient phones *edit: slight adjustment to relfect my current settings
  4. I have been sick all through new years eve and went to bed at about 23.15 hours ... so I had something to make up for today!! I had a big bottle of DEUS: brut of Flanders = beer brewn in Belgium but "post-processed" ('remuage' and 'dégorgement' like champagne) in France. It's 11.5% strong and must be drank in a flute or a coupe...and it tastes pretty good (but do not really expect a real beery taste, it's really more a champagny/beery mix but honestly as it costs like champagne, I had better real champagnes, but it was a nice surprise anyway) I had actually been sick for about 4 days now I had quite a bit of catching up to do so afterwards we opened a "small" (=1.5l ) bottle of Duvel which I got for my b-day 5years ago and which we had left to ripen (fermenting further in the bottle... since the euro-laws one cannot buy Duvel of 5+ years anymore since the brewery is obliged to put an expiry date on the bottles and shops nor bars are allowed to sell them past their expiry date which is actually b-crap as it is bottled with yeast and can 'ripen' for years without going bad) and that one tasted better than any champagne I had all year so indeed, beer can make life better... it has today!!
  5. this is great stuff greenmachine... makes me rethink my eq-setting! I always presumed all flat and lowest 2 bands raised a bit would provide a bit more bass, but it seems lowering all but the last or perhaps even all bands a bit actually does more good for the bass perception will try this immediately... (the pana's RP-JE50's are efficient enough to accept a bit of lowering...other, less efficient phones could suffer from lack of loudness with this technique...) just a couple of quick thoughts... - at first glance eh... hearing it seems to work very much with my NH900, just lowered all bands two notches (lowest 2 band were raised two...now flat, all the rest = now negative) and it seems to add more bass than I ever had before... still, seems a bit unclear/bloated, not sure what I prefer... might return to a near-flat eq'ing - even though I seem to percieve this 'phenomenon' ... how realistic is it that this actually will be the same for the NH900, as it has a different amp (than the NH700 with which these test were performed)... am I in fact "placebo'ing"(=imagining) things?
  6. no probs...just sharing the 'knowledge' enjoy the ride...and welcome to MDCF!
  7. I guess you're referring to compilation albums... as far as I know, the only thing you can do is to ckeck the 'properties' (right-click on the trackname and select the bottom option in the pop-up menu) of each track and manually insert the correct album name and mark it as a rack in a compilation album (checkbox) this will move the track to the correct folder (but it is way too much effort and Sony really should have done this better)
  8. 1kyle... please post links/proof when stating such 'daring statements'... before you know it handbags are flashing through the air again
  9. are you using any windows skins/other graphical "looks-enhancing" stuff for your desktop/windows? SS is known to freak out on some of that stuff...
  10. those are valuable recommendations, but as your deck isn't HiMD (at least I guess it isn't) any MDLP-player (which can get a lot more battery life and better builds than HiMD-models + are cheaper) will do
  11. ok... sorry I post this here, but anyone trading with Phoenix? (she hasn't received an address yet...) BTW: flatearth, I'm looking forward to getting your disc... but I just remembered that (while I did mention the state and city) I forgot to put USA on my parcel hope the guys at the Belgian post office know IL isn't in Belgium
  12. - use the AA add-on to get more battery life as 1350/1400mAh gumsticks are the highest you will find I guess - no "turn AGC-off" hacks I'm afraid... just get used to the routine of turning manual on and setting rec levels... you'll be needing it still welcome to MDCF and the MD-club...hope you enjoy the ride
  13. actually just started snowing... +/-10cm already... kinda fun, absolutely noone driving around so it was very relaxed and easy to do the shopping for tomorrow, while other years it's really hectic and overly crowded
  14. any player that can handle the format you record in (if it's SP, any player will do) will be suitable... one with a dedicated line-out would be very good (you could check the minidisc.org equipment browser to see what models offered on the net etc actually are) and just so you do not end up on stage without music one night... make sure you have a backup disc and an extra player just in case (NetMD/MDLP players can be found very cheap, so this shouldn't be that much of a extra cost, but it can save your behind!)
  15. I have enjoyed my panasonic RP-JE50 ($25) very much so far... and if your ears are big enough to wear them comfortably the sennheiser MX series are a step up from the stock buds for only $10 just look at my signature for links
  16. at the moment it's freeeezing (well at least it's too cold to go outside in my opinion) here (Belgium) ... and I believe there's a big cloud-front full of snow/ice etc coming this way from France should be warmer tomorrow (according to the predictions) so it'll turn into rain as usual
  17. I have just sent mine out couple of minutes ago... I used the method my friends use: 2 tracks / artist so you get a bit more feeling for the style/music a band/artist makes... still assembled quite a few bands including some (English sung) Belgian stuff and about 30 min (in HiSP) of my own recorded stuff (international bands pukkelpop and smaller venues) all is quite mixed in styles/genres and loudness... hope to receive feedback once it arrives BTW: is it ok to mention who is receiving your disc or would that ruin the surprise? BTW2: are we trading with one person (I get one from the same person that gets my disc) or is it just a random pick from kurisu's hat?
  18. they sound differently bad: - bad headphones make everything sound bad, but this can be for various reasons... some make a particular frequency range sound bloated/dull compared to the rest (I prefer flat sounding phones and eq'ing to my own taste) or in the worst cases make everything sound tinny or 'plasticy' (like the Sony buds that came with my Nh900) - low bitrates also make the music sound tinny (less punch and less sharpness to the highs, less 'rounding' - dunno how to call it - to the bass) and also introduces artifacts (bits that aren't supposed to be there) like ringing, pre-echo,... I can't really compare what I find more annoying... I have compared different phones and also different bitrates, but never against each other/mixed with me it's more an organic evolution: I got the NH900, used LP2 and HiSP and could spot the difference, but it wasn't that annoying... got Senn MX350/MX450 and the difference became clearer... bought panas RP-JE50 phones and I couldn't really use LP2 anymore... now I'm afraid to buy better phones as I might start using PCM for playback well, lots of types really but the more demanding stuff (which for me is like the Mars Volta; Explosions in the Sky; Mogwai; G!YBE; Tool; Arvo Pärt, ; Sati...) which uses the entire 'frequency/loudness spectrum', has sudden transients etc. shows the artifacting more than simple structured and/or loudness compressed things... guess 'Kid Rock' is a bit more forgiving, but just as with lower bitrates I'm not willing to lower my standards anymore (just kidding...you kid-r lovers out there...please enjoy your taste in music!)
  19. indeed greenmachine just like the step-up from a sony mono mic to your DIY stereo mics with the glasses-mounted positioning... I can't believe the other type was ever sufficient for me
  20. I have absolutely no clue on whether it is 'good' for you HiMD/batteries etc... but I have been using my NH900 with a 1400mAh gumstick and 2300/2500mAh (depending on which one is full) AA batteries in the AA add-on for almost a year now... still to see my first 'problem' caused by that and I must say that the battery life with this combo sure rocks! so in short...dunno but I too would love to hear a real decent scientific explanation on this one... good question!
  21. The M-models are HiMD: they are almost exact copies of the RH10 and RH910 but with added PCM->mac ability (and therefore a bit more expensive) Transferring PCM recordings digitally still takes quite some time (not completely realtime so you'll still win some time, but still quite long)... but a further advantage with the digital transfer method (which the M-models provide for mac) is that there is no SQ-degradation as the entire process is digital (no analogue stages which can introduce faults/noise) The other recording modes (HiSP and HiLP) are faster to transfer, but this is only possible to a PC (even with the M-models only PCM is transferable to mac)
  22. there really isn't a definite guide for quality/space ratio... you should really decide what your ears still percieve as music etc. for me personally (and for quite a few ppl here on MDCF) with my panasonic RP-JE50 phones, anything under HiSP (256kbps) sounds artifact-ridden and not full enough to enjoy as music but still a lot of ppl enjoy LP2 (132kbps) for mobile listening (in traffic/trains/...) and still quite a few have mentioned that for them the low bitrates are good enough... honestly I wished I couldn't hear the difference between HiLP and HiSP that would save me a lot of disc space, but unfortunately I do just transfer a track you know very well to HiMD in different bitrates and shuffle...see if you hear a difference (or to do this more scientifically: convert to different rates of atrac/3/+, reconvert to wav with HiMDRenderer and ABX the different files ... I personally could ABX LP2 from HiSP, but I couldn't really significantly separate HiSP from Wav, but then again I'm a bit impatient for ABX-testing )
  23. the most effective way possible with SS is to store stuff in WMA lossless, as this format is lossless compressed and also understood by SS so you can save space without losing data and without the need for pre-decoding to wav (which other lossless compressions like flac/wavepack/... would require)
  24. hmm...dex has responded to both your threads... like here but one time when dex posed a question for further info you never responded yourself... go easy on the 'nasty/angry remarks' please (especially when they aren't really true)... we wouldn't want this forum to become less friendly
  25. cheerup... have you read the NH600 manual at all? As you haven't got the machine yet and you will have some time waiting for the CD's to be ripped in SS, please do... it is very handy for when the unit arrives so you can work with it immediately. Further more it might answer some questions you still have; for example the page I mentioned (p.49) actually explains almost all there is (needed) to know about the bitrates (including the names) and disc space etc.
