  1. ok... before anyone attempts to help you no really, before we try anything else... why not upgrade to SS3.3? ...it really is much better than any version before and definitely 2.0... you can even rip your CD's withour DRM (copy protection) so you can backup your library without using the dreaded SS backup-tool please think about it (and as it works with a different library system, it's quite useless to give tips stemming from different SS versions IMHO)
  2. The Mars Volta: Scabdates I really love this stuff! but I do understand that a lot of ppl get edgy when listening to the band freewheeling/improvising/live-sampling...but then again it's jazz-inspired-mid-american-prog-rock, if this can't be pretentiously bloated/difficult, what can Magoo: the soatermic sounds of... a brilliant scottish band with songs averaging 2 minutes of pure strangeness!!
  3. and they are also there so that the coiled cable won't fit the pouch anymore
  4. with my NH900 I just put the no-repeat function on and then I know it will be random well at least till the disc is done hmm... honestly I think I've only used random once for 20 minutes... I normally listen to albums A-Z so can't really be very sure of my own remark...sorry
  5. if you install SonicStage version 3.3 (available from the downloads section here) you can upload your own recordings (digitally through USB) without any limits...if you have a PC at least! (otherwise look for the M-models MZ-M10 and MZ-M100 as they allow PCM recording to be transferred to mac) then you have the option in SS to convert your recording to wav, which is a plain old wave-file, so no DRM or other copyprotection stuff. This wav can be edited (with for example audacity which is free), downloaded to HiMD, burned to CD or even played so yeah, since the coming of age of SS and the advent of HiMD there really is no limit to DIY-recording and distributing just make sure you get a HiMD and read the 'HiMD' and 'live recording' faq's/pinned threads before you have a go at it, as that can save you a LOT of grief If you decide to choose HiMD: welcome to our outcast world and even if you decide not to... welcome to MDCF, hope we helped you along the way
  6. I was just wondering about this... I sarted using computers in 1986 (*see addendum)... a mac that had cost almost €12.500 ($15,200) with a scanner and laser printer. I used (my fater's) subsequent macs till 2000 (a G3 powerbook at the time, which he still uses) when I switched to PC. First I used a toshiba satellite with windows Me pre-installed, dumped the OS for win2kpro, then upgraded to a HP pavilion zd8000 (3.1GHz, 512Mbs Ram) with XPHome SP2... *addendum: I'm actually kinda mistaken...we had a Tandy and a commodore 64 at home and that first mac was bought by my dad and 2 other ppl together and it stood at a central location so everyone could work on it...still, that was my first 'real' computer experience, the T and C64 were "games-only" machines. In 1990 we sold our share in that first mac and got our own mac at home Now I'm getting a 12" G5 powerbook + 17" screen + wireless mouse/keyboard thanks to my current bosses... I'm quite exited because of the move back to mac as I was quite forced to move to PC because of budget limitations at the time... on the other hand, I'm quite settled in the PC-ways now: almost got rid of micro$oft stuff (except for windows ) and an avid user of mozilla firefox/thunderbird/calender and OOo... and while I know these are also available for mac (or perhaps even the camino-browser) I have assembled some periferals that only work on PC (a 250gb external HD and of course my NH900) I've just noticed I'm quite reluctant to let go of PC, just now that I'm slowly feeling in charge of the system and to start over in mac OSX (I left the system @ mac OS9, so it's quite a change) and besides I have just heard I'm required by my employer to install "entourage" which is like outlook for mac so I'll still be riding the micro$ift wave...so now I'm not so happy anymore still interested to see/read all your prefs/current setups
  7. I'm very happy to read that all's working well right now... but still, I guess it's something to consider: if you have the music in non-lossy format, to reconvert from lossy (MP3 or the like) to atrac is really a shame, as the SQ definitely suffers... I know it's a bit more work to rerip the CD's, but with SB (don't really know whether it works with NetMD) it's pretty quick and delivers much better results *edit: sorry, I read your profile which mentiones a NetMD...and kinda read over 'HiMD' mentioned in your post... so if you have 2nd gen HiMD you could always just play the MP3 without conversion which would save the SQ (a bit ) and save a lot of work as well PS: sorry if I'm still reading your posts wrong...I'm drinking Duvel today
  8. I had the buzz when recording with the ac-adapter attached, but this is a grounding problem and can't be helped by the silly clamps
  9. have a look in the NH1 manual and see if you can perform other functions described in there through the remote (like setting the equalizer etc...) if not, perhaps your remote is broken or it simply is very limited in use with the NH600D *edit...just saw that someone could do all this with the RM-MC40ELK and a NH600 so perhaps it is some strange 'D'-behaviour
  10. yes as the program will record what comes out of your soundcard...so it is processed with digital transfer or with the program Total Recorder (this catches the digital signal before it enters the soundcard) you won't have this step inbetween so it's purer... but whether you hear the difference, that's something else besides, I always thought you couldn't play pre-HiMD recordings through USB so that would rule out this method completely
  11. It's titled: "Are we being served? A critical analysis and evaluation of The Bg Read and Restoration as cultural participation enhancing television projects in a context of digitisation." and it's about the possibilities of hybrid (mixing entertainment and serious content) formats on digital TV for enhancing cultural participation with the general public... it was written in Dutch and can be found online... I'm still planning to write a short summary in English sometime, but life's a bit too hectic right now
  12. not pressing, just scrolling one click... but indeed, the volume buttons might be safer
  13. if you ripped the tracks from CD and they are definitely not illegal downloads ... why not simply transfer them to (Hi)MD with simple burner or at least directly rip 'em to atrac/3/+ in SS3.3 I mean, if you have got the CDs and you like listening to music and not artifacts etc, why sacrificing SQ with another lossy conversion?
  14. I honestly have too much respect for music to use anything below HiSP (256kbps)
  15. bought myself a sony-ericsson k700i phone as my previous one (a black-n-white pre-wap brick) died on me last week
  16. way to go bobt! (on the coffee shop and the NH1 as well hope this one lasts a little longer...)
  17. I would use Simple Burner to quickly transfer my CD's to MD without the useless and very bad MP3-step in between... or just 'backup' your CD's in a lossless format! Lossy compressions as backup is not a good idea IMHO *edit: and with SB HiSP (256kbps) really is sufficient
  18. well, I've got 1...and only one! it looks like a very small CD-case (or audio-casette, it is kinda the same design) that fits one MD precisely (unlike the bigger, useless 1st gen HiMD-disc cases) I literally found it while cleaning out the remains of the former user of my desk at work and it came with a 74min JVC MD (a completely uncolored translucent disc with JVC Dynamic Digital Sound MD74 on the uncolored metal shutter) wish there were more cases like that!! (PS, will try to add a pic tomorrow if I think of it... camera isn't available right now)
  19. if it is for in-car use only...don't bother with realtime recording, fake-SP (LP2) sure is good enough for listening amidst the engine sounds and you can use all the nifty PC shortcuts
  20. when playing a track, just scroll with the scrollwheel without pressing it and you'll see the tracks of the current album and after that the other albums on the disc, press the wheel on the album you want, scroll again till you get at the track you want, then press again and the selected track starts playing for more info on the RM-MC40ELK functions, be sure to check the NH1 user manual as well (downloadable from the minidisc.org equipment browser pages) as it describes the functions of the remote in detail (with the NH1, but most functions will work for other HiMD-models as well)
  21. blueraj... I really enjoy your labels and also agree that the old style was rather 'blah' (not 'blue' )... but the statement I quoted above is pure gibberish IMHO! I mean...it's not like they (or other MD-producing makes) had never made/sold opaque (= not 'see-through') discs before... so what this has to do with the 'data-ability' I'm really lost. External removable HD's (like the syquest stuff) and zip-drives (which both were data-only, no portable music playback) look more like see-through MD's than the old-stye 1gb's, and floppys (the big bendable stuff) and diskettes (the most 'cool' ones were see-through as well) have a disclike centre as well, so why 'hide' it on the 1gb's? but still, I like the crystal blue ones better as well
  22. [disclaimer]this post is quite rant'y (even though it does answer all the questions in post #32) and I would like to apologize for that [/disclaimer] cheerup... better 'lighten-up' a bit don't take these remarks too personally...but: - your continuous questions did seem to indicate that you hadn't really read all the posts by ppl trying to help you as they actually did answer a lot of your questions - even if you claim to have read the posts thoroughly, you definitely haven't read the NH600 manual (as I kindly asked you to do and to which I even linked (in post #13) and pointed you to the exact page (49) which should answer even this question)...it lists the minutes you can record (= download in case of the NH600) in all different bitrates available for the NH600 (except for 352kbps as it wasn't available yet at the time the manual was printed)... as an album's lenght is a very variable thing, this is about the best answer you will get to your question so if you wonder why ppl might seem to lose their patience: perhaps because your questions are all in the manual but still some quick answers to your remaining questions (to show you that we really do try to help): - quality is much better in 132 than 64 but if you really want good quality, 265 (HiSP) is more like it - do not just convert 64kbps tracks in your library to 132kbs as this is absolutely useless (will even degrade sound quality further as the low bitrate is reconverted again and more info is lost and the result will sound quieter and worse than the 64kbps track you started from) just rerip the track in 132 (or whatever you prefer) there you go, now just read he manual while listening to some relaxing music and if you still have questions afterwards, search whether they have already been asked/answered before on these forums and if not, feel free to ask them as we will try to answer them to the best of our knowledge and no, I do not think I'm being rude/condescendant/...(fill in what you'd like) even though some ppl on these forums think I (and anyone else emarking such as above) am(/are)... I honestly think it is plain common sense you first read, then search, then ask and ppl are entitled to point this out from time to time
  23. ok...it is more 'work' to jump folders with the 40...but you do get lots in return and still...maybe ppl should learn to listen to an entire album again in stead of jumping between tracks and stuff
  24. well tommy...it really isn't that complicated... just start scrolling and once you get past the tracks in the current album you'll be flipping through the other albums/groups in no time
