I use senn MX350's, senn MX450's and the panasonics RP-JE50's and I must say I definitely prefer the Pana's and though they are not bass heavy (not at all actually) they do have a lot more bass than the very bass-light Senn's

guys, we're ignoring some very important info here: - he wants to get rid of MD and rather not start with HiMD - he's got a bookshelf unit with digital out (which I assume means optical out)! so if someone with ome PC-audio knowledge could advise him a decent USB soundcard with optical in, he'd be all set to go

if you can find it, get the NH700/800 or even 900, if not, no worries... get the RH910 unless you really think the OLED is worth the extra money (which I doubt as you say you'd prefer the cheapest solution) and if you do not need to stealth record, you can just as well use a key-chain light to view the rec-levels on te MD in a dark venue... (or just get a RM-MC40ELK remote from e-bay if you do need to see backlit levels with the 910)

hi and welcome to MDCF, there's some good news and some bad news... good: you do not need to buy a HiMD-player, as even that will not let you upload those discs bad news: well, just read the line above again and focus on the second part the only way to get that music onto PC digitally involves buying a MD-deck with digital ou and a soundcard with digital in otherwise you could always use the MD-line out->PC line in and record with WinMD (IIRC) or something like a sound editor (like the free audacity) for further explanations of these methods, check this pinned thread in the recording section

What Are You Eating or What Have You Just Eaten?
The Low Volta replied to atrain's topic in The Loft
I accidentally ate some suff today... does that count? well, whether it does or not, here it is: - baby spit... my godson really drools like crazy and he loves to drool all over his hand and than smear your face with it to bad I was just trying to say something and he fed me a fistful of spittle - a cat food/cat hair-combo... well, my godson has more hobbies... like crawling all over the place... including the cat's feeding corner. I thought I was just in time to catch him, but once he smeared my face with a hand full of cat food and hair... I knew I wasn't sorry for this disgusting post, but I really had a great day and thought I'd share it with you all -
not to meddle in any (pointless?? 'cause sound appreciation, just as taste is quite relative and one should use what one thinks is good for him/her) discussions... but I thought we had settled it that the whole "atrac lossless + bitrates" idea somewhat defeated the point of lossless, as it seamingly only is lossless when played back from PC... but then it is actually lossless and not connected to any bitrate and should be compared to wavpack, flac etc. or even PCM/wav and definitely not to any lossy codec, and when transferred to HiMD (or any other DAP's) only the lossy part (as indicated by the chosen bitrate) is used, so there is no point in using the lossless version whatsoever (hold the enhanced transferring speed perhaps... hasn't been measured extensively) so either compare HiLP on the DAP to other lossy codecs or compare the lossless played back through PC to other lossless/raw methods... then you have a comparison... but saying that atrac lossless 64kbps (played through PC) sounds better than (*edit) as good as a 128-160kbps MP3 so atrac 64kbps sounds better than (*edit) as good as MP3's at a higher bitrate is just as correct as saying that a CD which you intend to rip to MP3 at a rediculous low bitrate sounds better than (*edit) as good as HiSP ergo MP3 is better than (*edit) as good as atrac3+ whatever the bitrates used... (remember kids... this is sarcasm! but without the intent to harm!!)... (*edit)I have made these changes to quote MDGB2 correctly, though "better" would fit in there just as well, as I am only stating the obvious! This whole paragraph simply means that there is no 64kbps lossless on PC or HiMD... just HiLP (=64kbps = lossy) on HiMD and lossless (= lossless = no bitrate, just data compression) on PC and one has to remember that when comparing different encodings of the same music personally, I think HiLP could be used for speech etc. but as HiSP gives me 8 hours, recordings can easily be uploaded and discs re-used on and on... I really cannot justify using it at any time... sorry - recordings (even speech) to me are precious enough to use the best bitrate I can... and I do not need to record more than 8 hours without a chance to change discs ... ever in my entire life I think - for listening with my panasonics, I can even hear the difference between 132 and 256 on a Belgian train, so I definitely cannot justify HiLP... and for storage space... discs are switchable and I always travel with a bag and carry at least three 1gb discs (= 24 hours of music in HiSP = enough!) so put away the handbags and simply use what you can tolerate... hell, if HiLP works for you, enjoy it... do not ruin the experience by discussing it till you can't listen to t anymore without a bitter aftertaste *edit: fixed my comment after MDGB2's remark just to be correctly quoting others, but this is actually a bit besides the point I was trying to make, which BTW still remains... I do not take a stand in the atrac><MP3 discussion (please read my post again carefully if you think I did)...I just wanted to point out that one should make sure that one is comparing things that can be compared (lossless><lossless and lossy ><lossy)

dex... you're absolutely right about the remote noise, I have experienced this as well... but I have also discovered that at a rock venue where earplugs are no excessive luxury this remote-noise can not be heard over the rest of the recording... so I still use the NH900/RM-MC40ELK combo for rock concerts in dark venues without any strange effects but for more quiet situations, just depend on the OLED and ditch the remote

Human... except for the D-models (NH600D, RH710D) and the camera model (DH10P), all HiMD's feature a "real" line in, a mic in (except for the NH600 and the RH710) and a headphone out. Only the NH1 and the NH900 have the menu option to switch this headphone out to a "line out"... it still is the same "port" and the menu feature line out simply is a one-stop option to turn off all equalizing and raise the volume to the maximum...so... all other HiMD models (like the RH10, RH910, NH800/700...) can imitate this 'line-out' feature by manually turning the EQ off and raising the volume (Dex has measured that this has virtually no difference from the NH1's or NH900's line out mode) so human, I do understand that you want to be sure before you buy anything ...but this part of your question really should be answered by now. to be honest: there really are three models that should interest you: -NH900 (for its line out ease) -RH10 and RH910 the NH1 needs the remote for a number of functions and you can't use its line out mode with the remote attached so just forget about that one the remotes don't matter as you will be connecting to a stereo mostly so you could just get a North-Am version of the RH10 just take a pick: -get the NH900 if you can find it cheaply (which isn't easy unless you live in australia so your choice could become very easy) -get the RH10 if you like a nice screen and think it is worth the extra money -get the RH910 if you don't I do not want to rush you or be rude Human, but I really do not think that posting even more questions is going to make your choice easier ... just read the minidisc.org equipment browser for details on specs and the product reviews section for reviews, look which models you can get easily and get one... using HiMD is much more fun than discussing it hope you will enjoy the HiMD-experience

if you are from Europe (like me) ordering from SoundPro's could become expensive with import duties and VTA etc... you could try to build some mics yourself (just look for greenmachine's pinned DIY-mics thread in the recording section) or PM him as he sometimes sells stuff as well (if you aren't really handy) his mics are not expensive! and very very good!! (I use them a lot and I really love the little things...)

Problem: Can't initialize media with SonicStage 3.3
The Low Volta replied to carmel dukas's topic in Software
just check if the write-protection-tab isn't on before you go uninstalling/reinstalling again... it's a common mistake (I know I've made it) and if that is the case...you'll be glad you didn't mess with your SS-installation -
at this moment 265 only... in the future (that means when I find the time and if I can still be bothered) I guess I will download a couple of really demanding CD's in 352... but what really annoys me is that we do not get 352 as a recording option as it would be good for a lot of longer taping I seem to do right now in which I'd still like the best quality possible without changing discs (and Sony...now we now that 352 should be possible)

see, that's exactly why big'uns such as BMI, Sony and others have agreed to act as partners on this project and allow thier artist's shows to be archived... perhaps they will start to understand that Creative Commons and other configurations can work as well BTW...the site seems to be down right now (I get gateway timeout errors all the time I knew I shouldn't have advertised this till I had watched all the shows I wanted ) fixed

for my work I'm interested in Creative Commons, social software, cultural uses of ICT etc... and I stumbled on this very well kept secret... well in fact, over here it is quite known and it even won a big award recently, but I guess most people still don't really know that much about it (at least my friends didn't) fabchannel beware, it is a fully flash (so horribly un-usability-friendly) and pop-up requiring, but good looking dragon of a site, but the contents... oh my god the contents this site offers (totally free) access to an archive of 400+ live shows (taped with multiple cameras mostly) from two major Dutch concert clubs (The Paradiso and de Melkweg) some of which include: - the arcade fire - Death from above 1979 - Roisin Murphy - the simple minds - echo and the bunnymen - ... and many many many many more... what's even better... they also do livestreams of the shows on that night, so for example December 3rd 2005, one can watch Bloc Party live from Paradiso what's nice is that both clubs have not seen any losses since they started this... rather more profit! so now Belgium's nicest club (the AB) is interested as well (at least for Belgian bands at first) so, be sure to check it out!... I'm currently listening to "the Arcade Fire live @ de Melkweg 11/03/2005" at work (I hid the video, but a nice liveshow is brilliant to work with) hope you will enjoy this... I thought it was simply too nice to keep to myself

What's your equalizer set at?
The Low Volta replied to sonic_rage's topic in Technical, Tips, and Tricks
with NH900 and pana's RP-JE50's it's at: +2, +2, +1, 0, 0, +1 just a bit more bass (for that warm/full sound) and a thad of treble (as it would otherwise drown in the lower frequencies too much)... the mids are mostly strong enough by themselves *edit: forget about this... look 7 and 8 posts further and learn why!! -
just a couple of picks from my life... I'll try to type 'em GE-friendly so you just have to copy paste them into the "fly to"-box - my current home: 50°47'48.28"N, 4°24'41.73"E (second house from the corner) - my work: 50°49'17.68"N, 4°23'35.57"E (building C at the VUB/free university of Brussels) - my favorite concert hall: 50°50'49.95"N, 4°20'55.19"E (the Ancienne Belgique in Brussels) - my sister/brother-in-law and godson's place: 50°50'19.90"N, 4°20'50.67"E (in a great neighbourhood, "de Marollen") - my parent's place: 50°55'45.77"N, 5°20'45.46"E (in Hasselt, a smaller town and therefore, pretty vague on GE ) - the hotel from my most recent holiday: 43°42'08.87"N, 7°19'28.11"E (well, it's the hotel's pool in which I spent a lot of time, the hotel is the pinkish building to the NW, attached to the pool... this is also where this pic was taken) hope you enjoyed viewing my life from above

Let's come up with a name for the ATRAC3plus 352kbps bit rate.
The Low Volta replied to Syrius's topic in Minidisc
good idea...but it should be HiSP(352) as it is a HiMD-mode birate and not an older one I guess -
- the multiple uploading restriction is a SS "feature" that has disappeared with SS3.2... this works for 1st gen (including the NH1) and 2nd gen (including the RH10) - the no-mac-uploading "feature" is a hardware+software issue and can only be negated by using one of the 2nd bis gen (the M-models) which allow PCM-recordings to be transferred to Mac so actually no difference between the NH1 and RH10 regarding uploading
-
if you really want A.352, just rip your CD's using Exact Audio Copy and import the wav's into SS -> transfer to MD in A.352 ...yes it is a big workaround, but perhaps you have some CD's that are worth it?

I would ditch the 3 or 3+ part, as there are no overlapping bitrates -
Let's come up with a name for the ATRAC3plus 352kbps bit rate.
The Low Volta replied to Syrius's topic in Minidisc
Hi'RSP well, 256kbps is HiSP, so 352kbps is Hi'RSP (read as Higher-SP) not? well indeed not, the whole Sony let's name every bitrate differently than the others and work with three versions of the codec simultaniously could be one reason ppl think atrac sound worse than MP3 (just kidding... no need to start discussing this all over again )... what is true is that my granny knows that a 92kbps MP3 sounds worse than a 320kbps MP3 (even though she can't handle VBR ) but throw HiLP, LP, SP, HiSP etc. at here and mention that they still come in different bitrates and she's glad she still uses a grammophone all of a sudden... so my idea: throw out all 'names' and let's use A[bitrate] for example: A265 or A352 or A48 (for ppl who do not care about SQ ) I hope I made my point, but please do not take this to seriously, 'cause I really enjoy listening to that latest acquisition, even if it is called "you-know-that-one-bitrate-that-came-with-SS3.3-and-which-mysteriously-is-able-to-play-on-my-1st-gen-NH900-even-though-the-older-new-ones-don't-and-MP3-never-will" from now on -
What do you look for in earbuds/headphones?
The Low Volta replied to WaywardTraveller's topic in 'phones
nope even though most shops have a try-out wall for over the head type phones but for buds/in ear: never and honestly, if a shop near me would offer that possibility... I might try it (but not sure yet)... but I certainly wouldn't buy them from that shop imagine a nice pair of in ear buds that come with some free gunk -
hi and welcome to MDCF David, to answer your questions: - yes - and yes, SS is needed for downloading (PC->MD) AND uploading (MD->PC) - in theory, if they are bit-by-bit perfectly transferred nothing really and to further ease your mind: there were lots of probs with SS, but with SS3.2 and now 3.3 the whole process is more or less safe-n-easy just remember not to edit on the recorder prior to uploading and make sure you have either one of the two SS versions mentioned (3.2 or 3.3, just check the downloads section) as they allow multiple uploads
