  1. well, not necessarily true blue... I rip my cd's with EAC onto a 250gb external HD, so it doesn't really matter to me to rip 'em to wav... with 3.3 I can transfer these ripped CD's as 352kbps (which is evn closer to CD than 256 obviously and practically indistinguishable from the source) so there is a bonus even for creating MD's... a gained bitrate, now if only we could directly record into 352 from analogue in
  2. I use a 1450mAh GP-powerbank gumstick in my NH900 and charge in the recorder... I have never encountered any difficulties/problems or strange behaviour I guess the most important thing here is to remember that NiMH batteries can't handle overcharging! I only charge when I'm around to check whether it's done or not and can honestly say that my NH900 has never sat in it charging cradle for longer than 5 minutes after the charging icon disappeared
  3. ^^^ including non-lossy compressions like flac
  4. the biggest problems with older SS versions are related to uploading your own recordings... if you need to do that, please try to upgrade to 3.2! - 3.2 allows multiple uploads (for the first time! no other SS version does this) - any version <2.3 is known to randomly corrupt uploads and render discs unusable (later versions do this as well, but only after editing the disc prior to uploading, so never edit before uploading and you should be safe with >2.3) - and one that's useful for non-recordists as well: 3.2 allows to import music without DRM so that you can share your library and back up easily (without the SS back up tool) so it really is best to use 3.2... and if it really won't work, I'd say it is about time to clean your PC nah, just kidding, but really it should work on a PC that's ok
  5. I've ABX'ed some wav's made of PCM (I know this is not really necessary as they should be the same, but I wanted both samples to pass through the same process) and HiSP and I must say: - either my hearing sucks (which could well be the case ) - or HiSP comes pretty darn close to the real thing I used winabx and my panasonic RP-JE50's in a quiet environment and I sometimes really thought I heard a difference but never got a significant result just try for yourself... I'm happy to use HiSP for most of the time, with 1gb discs, it's the perfect combo of SQ and space-saving IMHO...
  6. I chose playback/listening mostly...but I wished I could honestly have selected recording, as that really is my most loved application of HiMD! I just don't get the chance often enough (either I'm too busy or there's not really anything I'd like to record... or even worse, there is and I have got the time, but for once I didn't bring my entire setup, so I'm stuck staring at a brilliant spontaneous performance without any mics on me )
  7. I'm sorry...doesn't ring any bells D. but for what it's worth...you've got that tune stuck in my head now
  8. how very strange... this (partly) contradicts what was said in some other posts (including the big remote-guide) but as the radio won't work, I guess it won't push ppl to getting an am/fm remote anyway ...but still very interesting to see, thanks for your effort PCManiac
  9. as it is for transcripting meetings (i.e. talking) you should simply check whether the transcripting application can handle MP3 (like the very useful and free Express Scribe) so you could convert those wav's to lower bitrate MP3 (@ 128kbps) with the free editing program audacity (see downloads section) if you also need to do some editing as well or with a simple drag'n'drop converter which can be found on the net for free wherever you want this will mean that all three files could easily fit one CDR and (when cut into "tracks") could even be mailable (well with 'yousendit.com' and alike at least)
  10. ppl actually answered it already I think: - either transcode to atrac and beware that SQ will drop by converting... and higher bitrate will sound better than lower is a good rule when choosing the atrac type - or use the MP3's as they are, but use the EQ to raise the higher frequencies, as the 2nd gen HiMD are bugged in their MP3 playback - or just buy a (non-ipod) decent MP3-player when all you want to do is play MP3's and not record anything
  11. too be plainly honest, I don't think there has been one HiMD model without any problems (except maybe for the lowest end models NH600/RH710 and the RH910) from all other models bugs are known so in no other order than most recent+high end -> older+low end (so not judging) - RH10: MP3 playback bugged, scratches easily, titling error, faulty buttonfunctions - NH1: recently quite some issues with dropping out while recording, expensive to replace proprietary parts - NH900: editing bug (maybe also present on other models, dunno), faulty buttonfunctions - NH700/800: vulnerable selecting-wheel-thingy, (possibly the same editing bug) besides this all HiMD suffer from the "editing before uploading causes crashes" bug so, just choose the one you like most, but beware of the existing issues... no technology is perfect...ever!
  12. ^^^^ thanks for looking that one up k. these days I have to post quickly inbetween bursts of work as I have recently started a research job at SMIT-(studies on media information and telecommunications)-research group and I'm quite busy most of the time so as opposed to my former quite elaborate style I'm finding myself resorting to quick posts with fast reply more and more often
  13. there should be some good ideas about this floating here on the forums... but I remember a test a while ago comparing reasonably priced external pre-amps and the internal HiMD pre-amp and the conclusion was IIRC that the internal one isn't that bad at all and upgrading to a very low S/N-ratio mic is probably wiser than investing in an external pre-amp (though if you invest enough of course it could be an improvement) just search the live rec section for the test
  14. ah, sorry Marc, thanks for correcting me ...and for writing the extra's (and of course the original program...) I'm slowly starting to earn some money (in stead of only spending it as a student ) so count on a donation, even if I haven't used it recently myself, but with the added NetMD support and as I still trust the Renderer better than the Sony-app I still see some/a lot of uses for it and this hard work should be rewarded!
  15. @ smilesalot... data or audio files (atrac/mp3/PCM) and what do you mean by "was able to play it"? as audio through the headphones without the PC connection?
  16. I had this trouble in January and had my NH900 (successfully) repaired under warranty... just check for one of my first threads titled "entered the NH900 twilight zone... trange buttonfunctions in the dark or something" (sorry, too lazy to look it up myself right now) for a complete description of my problem/solutions and other stories of MDCF members
  17. well... buds and in ear are two very different things in my book...
  18. ^^^ don't know whether I understand this correctly, but you cannot upload Standard MD (LP/SP) recordings, even when made with a HiMD, only HiMD-formats (HiSP, HiLP and PCM) can be uploaded by USB
  19. I do...even when not mentioning what I'm listening to
  20. seeing this, I'm sorry I can't spare the cash right now, as this is one fine MD and it really looks brand new out of the box... and the lack of the original phones is more of a blessing than a flaw thanks for the pics... boy MD can look good
  21. rather the senn PX200 (as the MX series are earbuds and he didn't like that at all) what about in ear phones? the panasonic RP-JE50's are quite good for their money and isolate from external noise brilliantly so you won't need as much volume as with non-isolating models
  22. first... it's not really nice to hijack a thread (i.e. post your question in a pretty much unrelated thread...yeah, you have got the same MD model, but this is a software issue and the original poster has a library problem and you have got a database problem: they could be related but could just as well be something else completely) second...(this goes for the original poster as well, even though he did provide some) but without info noone around here is able to help... post according to the rules at least and further more, be as precise as can be... you can never give too much info but digi, you haven't even said which SS version third... sometimes it actually happens that no MDCF member knows what to do... we're all just friendly ppl you know, no pro's I'm afraid... but for database probs running the database repair tool (forgot what it's called, but you can find it in the downloads section) could be a good start, just search the software faq's, there are quite a number of threads pertaining database trouble

    Help

hi and welcome to MDCF... please read and post according to the software faq rules as it is very hard to help based on this limited info
  24. hm... as some ppl have commented before (and even proven with pics IIRC) and as sonic-rage just repeated in his previous post, the FM-remotes won't fit the remote ports of non-FM MD's, as they lack the opening for the extra bulge the FM remotes have... so this is pretty confusing... could you please post some pics? (and look up the remote number)
  25. thanks peripatitis for clearing things up, I too quickly assumed that using optical in was to record CD's to MD...but as you describe your (intended) use, it actually makes sense and it is always nice to see interest from the pro side, as it gives the medium more 'weight' IMHO... but one last slight problem... when using line/optical in, the MD insist on automatically placing trackmarks when sound levels drop too low, and while I personally haven't encountered this (recording a rock concert with a battery box-> line in didn't give any marks as it was consitently loud ), there are some issues with this: - you can't turn this feature off... not in any way - editing before uploading (including erasing/adding trackmarks) can cause uploading failures - combining the tracks on PC afterwards would work, but there seems to be an ever so slightly doubling of data around the trackmark just scan these forums... there are some threads on this (I believe Dex Otaku posted in some of them, so by searching his posts you should find it) ...and BTW, a warm welcome to MDCF!
