  1. flash based quality wav recording with decent batery life...and still affordable? which ones? not to bug you...but I'm just not very knowledgable about flash, I just thought it would already have popped up around here if there really was any competition for HiMD at the moment (and the closest I've seen was this but then almost everyone agreed that it looked promising for the future, but wasn't yet up to standards...mainly because of expensive media and short battery life on a proprietary battery)
  2. currently listening to my "from kyuss to qotsa"-1gb disc kyuss: - blues for the red sun - welcome to sky valley - and the circus leaves town kyuss/qotsa(/beaver but I didn't download those songs): -singles qotsa: - qotsa - rated R - songs for the deaf
  3. PCM (16/44.1) recording, pretty decent mic preamp (yes I know, ppl are always complaining about it, but in a test, an external cheapish preamp like the boostbox wasn't significantly better), small size (good for stealth), ease of use (if you take the time to learn a bit before you start goofin' around and ruin a recording ), relatively cheap, good battery life, decent capacity (1gb and when switching discs almost unlimited space seems quite good for me), since SS3.2 unlimited uploads, very good support forum ,...
  4. to 'phone home' but mine shows way more wear 'n' tear...and it's a rubbish phone anyway to listen... home and away my good old NH900 to travel away from home [attachmentid=499] (my dad's lancia delta...but again, ours shows much more scratches... eh, another car, well minivan drove right into the trunk at 70km/h while I was standing still at some red lights...so a bit more han scratches actually...but it still drives and it's fun to see those customizing/tuning dudes look up when this rundown/rusty/dented piece of junk still pulls up like a rocket) or Belgian trains rule nice and silent...unless there's a lot of ppl on them (which is almost always but that just means more ppl to bug with my music) and always delays, but that means more music-time...so no worries and I could also add a pic of my feet, but let's keep these forums tasteful
  5. ah, on the edge of being overly off-topic, I will try to answer this one... I actually misread that first bit... if everything is erased except for the homeless oma's...you're really out off luck, as I do not know any way to recover them at all very good choice if you care about your old material 'some' yeah, but the whining has been going on and on...and your point about CDR: still everyone had to make the switch and you couldn't upload any cassettes using a cheap CD-writer... so if ppl would switch to HiMD (a RH910 isn't that expensive ) and wouldn't expect to be able to upload their old recordings there would be no problem (you are actually just blaming Sony that they made their new technology look like and be partly compatible with the old stuff...a plus I would say, if only CD-players could have taken cassettes without quality loss) ...and as I said, logics about piracy or not, the recordings were made in a time where digital uploads were not expected, so do not expect them now or just be prepared to invest (in a deck with optical out) just as you would have had to before...and make sure you are informed before you spend money, cause Sony never promised HiMD would be able to upload MD recordings but I think this has gone off topic far enough...if you would like to continue this discussion, just PM me and MOD's, feel free to remove the previous posts
  6. just to answer the title: "no" it's just being repositioned... first it was aimed at the "I don't really care what it sounds like, as long as I look good with it i-puddle" (just kidding, I have friends with pods and I still speak to them ) and now I personally believe they will present it as a follow-up to DAT, aimed at the pro and semi-pro recording market (smaller but richer) so death as a simple consumer product? perhaps, but anyone still into (Hi)MD actually gets part of his/hers kicks from being different, not part of the i-puddle death as a format? nope, not untill they design a flash/solid-state recorder which matches/tops the HiMD qualities
  7. I'm very sorry but nope... pre-3.2 oma's are DRM'ed and will not be playable on other PC's than the original... only possibility I see is to play 'em through SS and capture them digitally with TotalRecorder (MDCF should get a commision from these guys! it is recommended so often ) and if playback through SS isn't possible there's only the analogue way left I'm sorry but how would you see this happening as the RH910 hasn't got an optical out and you know usb won't work? eiher you do invest in a MD-deck with optical out, or you mod one (search around on these forums... there are tips for doing this) or you just accept the limitations because at the time you (or someone else) recorded these discs, there was no possibility to upload digitally whatsoever (except for the optical-out method which still works) so you haven't lost any features...you just haven't gained any either! just use the analogue realtime way (which isn't that bad!) sorry if this sounds harsh...I definitely do not intend to insult or redicule you, but I'm slightly getting tired of all these "I'm bummed 'cause I can't upload my old recordings posts... sony should make this possible but they won't, so they are inconsiderate turds or something less civilized..." technologies evolve...live with it, when you recorded the shows, you expected them to be ulpoaded analoguely in realtime and you were happy with it... now, just because HiMD popped up, you expect Sony to allow digital uploading of legacy discs. That would be something like saying, hey they invented CDR, now they should make my old audio-cassettes sounds as good! (just face the facts, MD and HiMD are different) I would like to hear a bit more positive sounds on SS3.2 personally. We said: "if only they would ease up on the DRM and one-time only uploading then the software would be acceptable and HiMD could realize it's full potential"... SS3.2 brought us un-DRM'ed oma files (for the first time ever) and allows unlimited uploads and what do we hear? "we still can't do this and that and so and so..." I was born and raised an ideological semi-communist, but there's one thing I got to say that speaks for the liberal market mechanism... if you do not like something, just don't buy it but do not blame the manufacturers for not delivering stuff they did not (ever) promise... I'm very sorry for this rant, but I've seen so much of my wishes granted with this release of SS3.2... I'm just venturing into recording thanks to greenmachine (who has sent me some brilliant homemade mics just check out this brillliant thread) and I think it's a real boon for HiMD that uploading went 'unlimited' even though with the right knowledge, uploading was safe even before 3.2 (heck, I've uploaded all my masters thesis interviews without any worries and those really were crucial) just follow these instructions (even with SS3.) and nothing disastrous will happen and you'll be enjoying your recordings for many years to come... PS: I promise to ease up a bit in my next post, but this has been my first (decent/long) post in a long time, while I have still been reading all these whining posts and it just got the better of me
  8. thanks, it was...cost me almost a year of my life as it was written in Dutch, I guess you'll have to wait till I translate the summary/conclusions (which will happen as I need to send it to the BBC as well, but I do not yet feel up to reading my own writings again) thanks... it will definitely be more than sufficient to pass
  9. a bit off topic and therefore elegible for removal by mods if deemed necessary...but this was the existing thread that cam closest and I didn't feel like creating a new one... sorry but now the actual message: "Goodbye student life! I've just completed and handed in my Masters Thesis and now I can enjoy another two months of vacation and then it's work time for me...doh"
  10. if this is a 'mini'-review... I'm wondering what a full-grown one would look like thanks for the thorough commentary...nice read!
  11. welcome to MDCF rbperc, 1. you can get your stuff from MD->PC with your MD-recorder (without help from pros ), but only in realtime (and unless you have an MD-deck with optical out, only analoguely...but quality still is pretty good) 2. if you want to upload faster, you need to buy a HiMD... but beware, you will not be able to upload older recordings read all about it in this thread and feel free to ask more questions! always glad to help
  12. in this thread the procedure for hacking the NH900 is explained... as long as you exactly follow the procedure you should be safe... if you do something wrong, just DO NOT PRESS PAUSE, just remove all power sources and start again nope, language will remain the same I believe ...I actually believe it does make a difference, but it is also true that the volume limit on european models isn't just firmware based, so it will never be as loud as other regions (kust check this thread) best advice I can give? perform the hack if you feel confident enough and buy some good headphones that are more efficient (like the Panasonic RP-HJE50 or something else as long as it is more in ear/closed type...) hope this helps
  13. just check 'transfer as is' somewhere in SS... (at the transfer setup or options or something...see the help files for a better explanation)
  14. yes it will, it's actually a bit more sofisticated than the RH910, but as it is 1st gen HiMD, it won't play MP3's without conversion and the RH910 will
  15. welcome to MDCF azovsky, but I'm sorry...you'll have to do it realtime, as there are no possibilities to upload old-MD format recordings faster than realtime at all...so the digital realtime way is the best route.
  16. - titling on the recorder is OK, but easier using SS prior to uploading - I would really advise against other types of editing, as there have been quite a number of reports of trashed uploads with edited recordings just use audacity or another program to edit (not SS) and follow these instructions as this really is the safest way known at this moment
  17. the release of the two adapted 2nd gen models that allow for pcm->mac transfer is aimed at the pro market, so there might still be hope, depending on the uptake by the pro-niche of the two models...
  18. the method I described, using EAC was actually only meant if you had a CD without any trackmarks (which I assumed) and the idea was not ripping to different tracks, but to one wav and making a CD or CDimage using a cuesheet which holds trackinfo...then import that CD(image) into SS or transfer it using SB... if you have the original CD and it has trackmarks, just pop it through SB and you're all set, gapless playback all the way without any hassle...
  19. if you have the CD, do not transcode into MP3 unless you want to keep it as an MP3 on the MD (only 2nd gen HiMD can play MP3's and they do not sound as good and use up more space and battery then atrac types, so I would advise against MP3) the way without ANY gaps: -just rip the CD with something like EAC (exact audio copy) to one big wav -burn a CD or mount a CD-image (possible with EAC as well) with trackmarks added (read the manual from EAC or Nero for instructions how to do this) -transfer the CD (or image) to MD using SimpleBurner (available in the downloads section if you do not have it already) the way with most likely small gaps: -rip as wav -open with audacity (see downloads section) and save sections as separate wavs -import in SS and transfer to MD there could be other (simpler) ways, but the first one definitely lets you have gapless tracks on MD hope this helps
  20. hi grey real steam, welcome to MDCF... please post your full system specifications (including audio/video drivers and codec-packs) according to the rules, so we can beter understand what could be the problem... in the meantime, you could read this thread on the omjgbox.exe error for possible solutions
  21. if you follow the procedure as described in this thread using SS3.1 (or at least >=2.3) you should be safe... it is the best method I've come across until now...
  22. congrats on the birth k.! I've already membered up... if only I had some time to browse around or even post something, that would be great stressed greetings to all!
  23. please read the rules for posting in this section and post your specs accordingly also, what model of MD are you using? only HiMD-recorders will allow uploading and only of HiMD-formats (HiSP, HiLP, PCM)
  24. better to rip the songs in question as wav, devide them in the free audio-editor audacity (available in the downloads section) and then import them into SS and put them in the right album -> transfer to MD hope this helps
  25. if you are using HiMD (I gues you are, this is the HiMD section ) please read and follow the instructions in this thread as merging (and all sorts of editing) prior to uploading can cause errors and even lost recordings! hope this helps
