Market share for mac OS X was mentioned so I won't go into that. Next, too many people have them, plus they don't look all that good, more or less all the same. The white colour isn't all that attractive. Scratches, ahh yes, the friend of the Ipod. Unlike ipods, most sony products are made with better quality and although still scratch indef in the long run, they are much more resistant to wear and tear than ipods. I saw a guy this morning on the bus with a nano, sure its small and all, but the screen was rather badly scratched, and I could see it half a meter sitting away from him Sound quality that play a major role sadly. I've heard the ipods and I can say I couldn't live with one. The sony on the other hand has a crisp pure sound which is better than even my MD. Drag and drop exists in the connet player, how do you think I got the songs onto my player? you don't need to use atrac, and mp3 works just fine. All the functions off the A series work witht mp3s as far as I know, ie like the shuffle, EQ and etc. battery life is important to me. Next, you can remove the battery in the A series yourself, and get it replaced. Don't you void your warrenty when you open your own ipod? As for the other players on the market? most have't been in the music business that long or ever. Perhaps if Panasonic made something better than the ipod, or perhaps, even sharp, I am sure it would sound better than the ipod. The Connect software has its problems, but for me, it works fine and I am able to transfer music no problem. where the CP lags, the player makes up more than the rest of the distance. I really could't care less about the name of it, it's a Walkman to me. I see it this way, why buy something everyone else has? be original.

NW-A1000 and NW-A3000: Initial Impressions
Ascariss replied to Ascariss's topic in Product Reviews/Pictorials
Well, after one day of use, I can say I am glad I bought it. Only one complaint, the shuffle seems to play some songs more than others, kind of annoying but not a huge problem. There is one thing I wish I had done before transferring the files over, adding genre info and album info for all my files. lol I am doing that as I write this. Reasons being, looking at the player with 2 unknowns on the screen becomes kind of annoying. Let's see, the battery lasted me all day and only went to half way point, listening time was roughly 4-5 hours at 192 and various other VBRs and also some 256 and 320 as well. I checked out the directory of the files on the player and all the files are encoded in oma, which I did not know. Anyone know the possibilites of somehow converting the MP3s into oma via windows and then just copy and paste into the diretory in the player? There is some lag actually for accessing the drive when music plays, and perhaps 1.5 - going between the menus when the song plays as well. -
I myself don't even have the greatest PC, 600mhz P3, 512 ram, 256 video card, and 80 gig drive. So it ain't the PC for sure. perhaps this option, although risky. remove SS, and CP, then try to clean out the registry as much as you can, reboot, and install CP. I first installed SS3.3 and then installed CP, but I don't think it matters. CP should update automatically once it finishes installing.

Sorry to hear your troubles Dinko. For some reason I am the opposite than you. The install from the file on the forum wasn't that great for me, while the install from the CD was flawless and no errors. I am on XP with SP2 so maybe that is possible why I had no problems. Or maybe I just got lucky. Why are you having so many troubles? Of all the problems you mentioned: - Various installation failures. - CONNECT won't update to the newer versions - CONNECT launches, then shuts itself off - CONNECT imports library then loses it - I wanted to delete some artists from the library. CONNECT will delete some items, but not others. Deleted items come back when CONNECT is restarted. - When NW-A1000 is connected to CONNECT, CONNECT sees the same tracks twice or more in the album directory on the A1000. The player and SonicStage only see each track once. - CONNECT refuses to delete tracks off the A1000 - When CONNECT is successfully installed, rebooting the PC launches Windows Media Player upon Windows start up. Windows Media Player freezes or displays an error message. I have none of these. hmm interesting.

Indeed, i have the same problem, not sure why. Granted 95% of my tracks have no album info or genre, I may get onto that tonight though.

GYM | Network Walkman BROWSER-PLAYER-EXTRACTOR
Ascariss replied to xispe's topic in Grab Your Music (GYM)
Will try the program with the A1000 tonight. -
Up to 2mb per second, rarely get that at most sites. only pay 40 bucks canadian with taxes, rather good deal.

Here is the thing, NA radios will work, ie car radios, but not as well as european stock ones in cars. My uncles chrysler voyager radio from canada doesn't work very well in europe. but it does pick up stations. Never tried any thing from europe to NA though. My old sony casette walkman with radio worked just fine in europe though when I brought it over back in 95.

NW-A1000 and NW-A3000: Initial Impressions
Ascariss replied to Ascariss's topic in Product Reviews/Pictorials
I believe you can, there are many ways navigate, more so than the HD5 I would think. You can browse by letter, ie in groups of 2, ie AB, CD, EF. etc and of course it goes by the song title, not tried anything with artists. One side not, the stock buds have a nice sound suprsingly, but they are not comfortable when I use them, so I would recommend getting something better, Also the player comes with an extension cord, much shorter than my EX71s came with, and I have to admit it comes in very handy. -
NW-A1000 and NW-A3000: Initial Impressions
Ascariss replied to Ascariss's topic in Product Reviews/Pictorials
I deleted the songs once i listened to them so I forgot what they are. But I do believe some of the press shots have the 2 samples on their screens. well after about 2 or so hours, I finally got my music on there, not all of it, 3 gigs left still of free space. I set the EQ to my usual setup like i did on my MD, and the sound is amazing, no distortion what so ever. Clear as crystal. My remote, the MC33EL is useless per say, doesn't even show track name only track # and time elapsed. but I actually don't care now. When music plays, a screensaver of sorts seems to turn on, at least it does on mine. They are small little specks of light that look like stars, exploding in random areas, looks quite nice. Uhm, I will have to look into more of the animations but there are some I haven't seen yet, nor that I can describe. lol Yes I am still picking up the 20 gig model, but I wanted the 6 gig, because I can't live without my music. Also interesting situation, while transferring songs, my PC rebooted, so I replugged the A1000 back in and it continued transferring songs no problem. lol If there are more questions please ask away. -
Europeans: Boost the Volume of the NW-A3000/1000
Ascariss replied to Christopher's question in Audio
Kamil apparently there is no need for a hack, Tetsugaku-San has mentioned that the EQ works with MP3s. -
I couldn't resist it, sitting in class I snapped. I went and picked up a new A1000, the silver model. The MD has been officially retired. So long good friend. First off, the box is small which it came in, so I wasn't expecting that. I got home opened the bad boy up and connected the trusty EX71s to test out the 2 samples on it. Dear lord was I in shock. Here is a nice animation when it starts up, and when it turns off, it says see you again or later. lol The sound settings were set to none, so I was shocked to hear how good the sound quality was with no EQ. I popped in the Connect Player CD and it started up right away, it installed with no hitch, interestingly enough there are only 3 regions available when you install: Japan Europe Canada Oddly no Ausralia yet, and launch is what this friday? Anyways, after it installed, it began updating right away by itself, took a good 5 min or so, after a reboot, and what not, I went to open CP. This was the moment of truth. What has sony created here? It took a good 5 to 7 min before the player actually opened, but now I know why, the damn thing was scanning my PC for music files, since once it opened, at the bottom it said, 2026 tracks. I was rather thrilled when I saw that. The Connect Store doesn't work sadly in canada, and it says: "The music download service is not available in your region" Anyways, overall the CP runs a bit slow but no errors with it yet. The A1000 is charging at the moment, so once that is done, music transfer time.

It's wierd how rich people who have all the money in the world, suffer depression more often than regular folk. Seriously though, this is a blow to the firm and family. One thing though remains, did she commint suicide because of the depression or some other factor?

Europeans: Boost the Volume of the NW-A3000/1000
Ascariss replied to Christopher's question in Audio
Very good news that this hack exists, could help sales since some people might stay away from the new units due to the volume regulation. -
Well the purple/violet version of the A3000 is sold out on the sonystyle.ca website, and now only next in line orders are available. They were most likely sold out even before today, but it does make you think how many units were available in the first place. If the same thing happens for the silver unit, it would send a strong message to sony that indeed there is a market for such products up here and it was a mistake not to have the HD3 and HD5 up here as well. Oddly the smaller 6 gig versions are still available so they might not be selling as expected or sony just imported a larger stock of them. Kurisu I was wondering if you know of any info relating to stock or sales numbers from your contacts?

Did UK Beta Test 'Connect Player'? | Reflections
Ascariss replied to Christopher's topic in Software
Tridactyl I couldn't agree more. Both futureshop and best buy here push the ipods aswell. Best buy less so. I was in the same situation as you a few months ago, I was happy with my NetMD but having only 2.30 hrs of music on one disc, LP4 was not an option, I was begnning to get kind of frustrated. I looked at some Hi-MD units, either the second to highest up or the highest up model. But the one with the camera looked rather big, and as did the other Hi-MD units, except the NH1, but that is 1gen Hi-MD. Seeing as I got used to a thin MD unit, I was reluctant to buy a bigger one. So I was going to go for a HDD player, either the HD5 or HD3. I looked around and well the HD3 was on sale at minidisc canada so I was going to order it. checked out some forums, mostly this one, and then went to look for reviews of the player. turns out the HD5 was a bit better, but I would have a harder time getting one to canada, unless I did online. So I thought, won't the new players be available in canada as well? Made a decision to weight and go for the new one, and once sony confirmed they were coming, I pre ordered one. MD discs just began to get a bit boring and I didn't want to carry them around in my bag. Plus since I use my remote all the time, I don't take out the unit from my bag much, so it usually is in a closed off part of the bag with a lock. So changing disks becomes a chore. As you too, I only do playback with my MD, no recording. Hopefully once the player arrives on the 15h, I should have a prelim report that day and a full out report by the end of the weekend. -
NW-A3000 + Connect (now with pics) (part 2 at end)
Ascariss replied to Tetsugaku-San's topic in Product Reviews/Pictorials
So far I think the mp3 players and minidiscs by sony are limited by windows limits, so 255 is a good guess. I've yet to encouter any mp3 that has any longer name than 255, and trust me, I have long mp3 file names. As for the EQ, I've never set all 6 on my md to +3, but I have done a range of high lows, mid mids, and high highs, and the sound coming out is perfect. I am in short of time at this moment, but I am sure there are sites out there that explain the EQ and so forth. -
It's fine for me, perhaps you need to change your board settings to your region or turn on daylight savings time in the board settings area.
-
the new A series works just fine with sonicstage, some features such as intelligent shuffle and tme shuffle work work, but everything else should. the new connect player has some bugs but in 2 weeks to 3 times time it should be all fixed up according to info from sony provided by kurisu. Also, the new CP doesn't support any old players, up to HD5, so if u don't want to use CP but want the new player, it will work. Likewise HD5 will work fine with SS3.3 but NOT with the connect player. actually we all get screwed every year, since most firms release a new product every 12-16 months or so. I am sure once I get my A3000, by this time next year, there will be a new model lol. Not sure about the new program from xispe and the A series, it would be nice for someone to test it out. If you can go check out both in person, if not possible, go with what you think looks better on paper.

NW-A3000 + Connect Player Impressions
Ascariss replied to SimonGrafftey's topic in Product Reviews/Pictorials
You can use sonicstage 3.3 to transfer music to the device, there is no drag and drop like on the connect player, but SS is rather simple to use. The device once connected to the PC can also be used as a storage device, but you can't transfer music to listen to it, by just using windows explorer. -
NW-A3000 + Connect (now with pics) (part 2 at end)
Ascariss replied to Tetsugaku-San's topic in Product Reviews/Pictorials
Tetsugaku-San thanks for the info on the mp3s, this is great news indeed since I doubt I will be transferring songs as atrac files with this player. None Heavy Pop Jazz Unique Custom1 Custom2 I have the exact thing on my MZ-N10 and only use the custom ones, and never use the V-Sur, since it doesn't sound very real and you can't use it with the EQ either, on the N10 at least. -
Well they are OLED, and from Tetsugaku-San's review there are animations on the unit, so I would assume there is something there that is controlling them.
-
Then how are people in canada supposed to update CP if it don't do anything? Canada may not be a large market for Sony, but so far the actions by sony haven't impressed me.
-
Indeed, should be interesting to see what moves Sony US takes. I'm still betting the announcement will comes at CES 2006 next january for launch in the US. People have received Xmas catalogs from best buy and no info on the players there. The meetings for sony store reps was in august of this year in vegas and the players were there for sure and they could try them out and were briefed on them. Now I am not sure if US dealers were there, since the rep I spoke to was from canada, but I would assume they would be as well. Oddly enough, once I go pickup my A3000, or perhaps might stop off on monday at the local store, and ask the guy if there was any news for intro into the US.
