Tom, trust your ears if it works for you then it works, don't worry about what you should or should not be hearing by transcoding. Recently I have started to use HiLP for portable listening and I get on fine with it but a lot of people on the forum would argue that this bitrate is too low for music - it's not whether they're right or wrong it's about what I'm comfortable with. Happy listening. Jon

I don't have one and I don't think I'll get one, partly because of the cost and partly because I already own an RH10 which serves me well. I would be interested if they released a lower spec version which would enable me to do the legacy uploading.
-
Yes, I have noticed the same thing. I bought my RH10 18 months ago for £150 ish and a used RH910 went for £155 last week! It could be people like me who already own Hi MD units but feel insecure about their possible disappearance buying them. I've also been looking at getting a hd3 or hd5 and the price of these are holding up very well also.

Many thanks for the advice everybody!

A work colleague has lost the side carriage for her rh 910 (it was stolen along with other stuff). Anybody got a spare, or advice where to get another, (I appreciate it's a long shot but maybe someone has a broken rh 910/10 and they've kept the spares). We're UK based. Any advice appreciated.

My understanding is that if you transfer from HiMD to PC in SS and you go to settings and tick the 'transfer as is' option then it will not recompress the recording. It will not export as a WAV if you uncheck the dialogue box that appears when you start uploading. You can always export the file as a WAV at a later stage by right clicking on the file which will give you the option. Your Hi LP recording can then be downloaded to a separate disc without recompression (again you need to tick the 'transfer as is' option). My knowledge of SS and HiMD is fairly basic, it may be corrected by more skilled members of the forum

The problem is that you cannot upload net MD recordings to the PC even with the recent edition of sonic stage. When you get the 910 which is a hiMD you will be able to upload recordings made with the 910 to the PC and then you can right click on the tracks and export them as WAV files to the PC and use them as you'd like. The new Rh1 that is coming out soon is capable of uploading net MD recordings but I doubt you'll want to get this as you've just bought the 910. There are ways of uploading the recordings in real time using software such as audacity, I've done this with net MD recordings. You could also try recording from the 707 to the 910 and then you could upload the old recordings but again this would involve realtime recordings.

In a recent episode of the Archers (BBC radio soap opera) Fallon Rogers daughter of Jolene who runs the pub with Sid was heard to say something along the lines of, 'hang on I'll just get my mini disc' for an interview she's doing on a local history project. Okay it's not on TV and it's not actually real but it's MD in the media!

Hi ljadkins, thanks for the info, I'll try out these features soon, I have previously only used audacity for voice recordings. Jon
-
Hi ljadkins, any chance of a brief guide to cleaning up and normalising in audacity or point me to a link. Thanks, Jon.

Graham, can you advise on the best way to browse the Argos site. The only way I can find stock is to add the item to the basket and then check stock at stores one at a time, is there a way it can display where the items are stocked. Couldn't find the NH1 but noticed they had HD5's for £99 (couldn't find anywhere stocking them though)

Is Sony Missing a Beat By Not Offering Hi-MD Options?
surripere replied to Christopher's topic in News
I'd definitely buy a deck, I'd don't need (I doubt if I could afford) top end pro equipment. I just want a decent quality machine that I can plug my discs into without faffing around with leads all the time, I can operate from a remote without getting up and down to hit tiny buttons, something I can record music and radio in real time. As somebody else has made the point, what's the point of removable media if you can only use it in one piece of equipment. I have been starting to think about one of the Onkoyo units but I don't want to get one if there is any chance that Sony will bring one out in the UK. I would like a car deck but I'd really struggle to justify the cost, it's not an area I've spent money on really but I think they should make one. Ok, I'm off to vote! -
Are you just talking portables or can we rule out a deck
-
Is the line out/headphone port a genuine line out or is it just like the RH10 headphone port but rebadged as a line out.
-
I was disappointed there was no line out on the RH10 but at the risk of sounding ignorent, what's the difference between a line out (optical or digital) and the headphone jack. If line out gives a better sound through a hi fi then I might consider getting the new machine, especially if a deck doesn't appear.

I had a problem and raised a thread on the forum about noise when recording from vinyl with AC power connected, I was advised to try a ground loop isolator. I didn't go down this route, I just record with the battery but it might be worth looking at as it is quite annoying. I just didn't fancy spending the money on something I wasn't sure would work and I get by okay with battery only for vinyl recording. Here is the thread with a link to the ground loop isolator http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showt...l=buzzing+vinyl when

The short answer is, I don't know but I've always felt it does sound better. I remember I used to use my mzn707 to record and playback through my hi fi and the deck just blew it away for sound quality, discs recorded on the deck and played in the portable sounded better than those recorded on the portable. There is the possibility I am may be deluding myself because: (a) the volume difference, having to turn up the amplifier volume so much to get the sound I'm used to may trick me into thinking it's poorer quality, ( it's fiddly connecting it up and using it and the hassle of doing this makes me resent the absence of a himd deck which again tricks me into thinking it doesn't sound as good. However, I don't really believe this, I'll have another go at comparing later this week. Sorry no technical input but through my speakers and amplifier the MD deck is superior
-
I doubt if I'll go for it, I don't do enough recording to justify it. I use my RH10 mostly for playback of CDs but I do some recording from vinyl and then uploading to the PC. When I bought it I figured that a deck would follow but I'm not sure now and without a deck I feel less certain about my future with the format. A deck would give the option of making lengthy compilation discs and compiling albums that give quality hi fi playback in the living room, personal stereos are great and I do a lot of listening on my RH10 but I still find myself awestruck at how good music sounds through a very ordinary hi fi. Plugging the portable unit into the hi fi is okay but fiddly and not the same quality as listening to SP on my MDLP deck. To reiterate early comments on this thread (without the font), please Sony give us a deck and I'll be with the format for many years!

Sonicstage 3.4 Debuts With Stunning New Functionality
surripere replied to Christopher's topic in News
192 KBPS - Excellent, should be a decent compromise between space and audio quality. This seems incredible as it was only a few months ago that the prevailing mood on the forum was that SS 3.2 wouldn't be upgraded. As Kurisu points out Sony must be looking, and more crucially taking notice, of the forum. All the more reason for us to keep up the pressure for a HiMD deck as the thread on the HIMD section advocates. Such an animal would make my audio life complete (okay that's a bit over the top but I really would like one) -
I've had the same model for about a year now, paid nearly double that though. Yeah nice kit, I waited for it to come out just because of the MD link/line in, can play the HiMD all round the house now. Out of all the recent developments in PC and audio hardware over the last few years DAB has had the biggest impact on my musical environment and with the right outputs and inputs works well with the recording capability of MD/HiMD. Hey Doomlardis I also heard Jim Noir today, thought they were great

16 1GB discs, around 100 80 minute discs, handful of 74 minute discs. Haven't used all the 1GB discs yet but am already thinking of buying more as I'm worried about them disappearing.
-
Yes me too, it seems to do it more when I press the volume button and release it quickly. It is annoying but because it still activates the volume with the search menu up I haven't bothered doing anything about it and I don't fancy sending it off and not having it available for a few weeks. A DIY solution would be nice!

Hi A colleague at work is planning on doing some phone interviews with a RH910, she's getting the adaptor that links to the phone. My question is, should the lead from the adaptor go to the mic or the line in. I think line in. Any experience or thoughts. Any help appreciated
-
Thanks for responses Let me know how you get on Kurisu, I will also try when I get round to getting a large enough external hard drive and post the results.

Hi I've nearly filled my desktop PC with Atrac files in Sonic Stage 3.2, it's got a 40gb hard drive and I've got about 5gb left. I've just got a laptop with a 100gb hard drive and I'm thinking of putting my music on this. What is the best way to go about this, is it possible to do without reripping CDs and uploading recordings from vinyl? Can I move them all across with an external hard drive? Is it possible to move them through the home network? Any help much appreciated
