Fullcompass is an online retailer for Pro gear , and good prices , I would go with the 822 over the 66 , just because it is better balanced Impedance wise for DAT and MD . the 66 might be a little tight sounding and I think you will get more noise than you want . I have used a LOT of mics in my time , the 822 has become my mainstay I have an ECM M5S Sony that I am building a Box for right now , I would sell it if the offer tickled my interest

Well the SM57 , is a Balanced mic ( - + and ground ) pins 1,2,3 , ......... so in order for it to work correctly a Special cable has to be made TRS = Tip- Ring- Sleeve ..... the Tip gets the Positive signal , the Ring also goes to the Positive signal , and Pin 1 and 3 of the XLR cable go to ground or the Sleeve of the TRS plug. Then the SM57 will work , but will be Mono .and will not have the Gain your looking for . here at this site are some samples , the first is the 822 , and you will immediately hear how quiet it is compared to the Sennheiser mics that were tested ( Go figure , Nicer mics sounding worse !!!!) http://freesound.iua.upf.edu/packsViewSingle.php?id=3135

Audio Technica AT-822 I use this mic almost exclusively with my RH1 as well as any other MD , But it is VERY sensitive , and very WIDE spectrum , I also use a ECM 959a from SONY , that is older and less sensitive , but doesnt sound as good . What you might want to do is use a Mackie 402VLZ3 mixer and two Cardioid mics which will have a Smaller pickup pattern and thereby reduce Background noise. Omni directional Mics pickup a larger area Cardioid mics Pickup a Smaller area . The AT822 is a Pair of Semi Cardioids that depending on Gain change their character quite nicely . I record my Acoustic , or Live sessions , and also use in the Studio with the AT 822

Interference from digital circuits is part of the reason , Yes the old analouge tape decks can do that because the output is mulled , only the Rec Head of the Tape deck is working , so the Play head is shut off , I think that MD could have done it , but the bypass circuit might take up what little room was left in the Md ( Which isnt much as we all know )

The Output of the headphones IS the output of the MD , the MD 's amp is what drives the phones , not the remote.

I bought a New 4 GB SD card for the DR1 , Class 6 high speed , Low power consumption ,............... and I have noticed a couple things , immediately. #1 The Startup was way Faster #2 when recording With Phones and Monitoring , there was still noise , BUT when NOT Monitoring and NO PHONES connected the Noise levels dropped substantially. Leaves me to think it is Partially a Power Management issue ...... Anyway , it was a NICE upgrade , I am liking this .......... let us see what the next update brings .

Well I am a MAC owner , but DO NOT own the iPhone , ( the solar powered stuff APPLE just applied for patents over though might get my attention . MD lens cleaners can be unsafe unless you use a very good one , do not buy a Cheap off brand one or DRY type . Use a wet type MD Lens/Head Cleaner that comes with a little bottle of it own stuff , Audio Technica , or Teac would be ok . I have one myself

well also If you tried to record from its own headphone out back to the Line input , you would create a Feedback loop , that would destroy the sound . and possibly damage the unit . visualize :> >>>> Headphone ( which outputs the sound of the unit "All sounds" ) into Line in > Line Is recording but the recorded sound is being output , so now you have TWO sounds coming to the heaphones The Radio , and the Recording , which are slight out of sync with eah other and get what is called "Gain Stacked " The Gain of one PLUS the Gain of the Second ,........ in turn a Feedback loop results in which the gains of each keep getting added to each other . and then a VERY LOUD Squeel is what you will get . It is inherent in a closed system .

Standard A/B USB cable , and some of the Wall wart USB adapters for cell phones work ok as long as the Amperage out is at least 1 amp , Some will work some wont , Willco works pretty good ,I have 3 of them , but my Filco USB block for my 4.4 amp USB out battery pack works great ,I bought one of the Filco Battery block (Lithium Ion ) shirt pocket battery ,and it works very well , and at the price , it is less than the Sony adapter will be , plus you will have extra power to spare . http://www.diatec.co.jp/en/det.php?prod_c=457 see if you can get one of these ,......sold under the "Diatec" name

sad to say but if you have installed , then uninstalled SB and it still remains , you may have to reformat . Corrupted drivers can be hard to track down just exactly which one it is , as that there are some 30,000 plus drivers on a Windows system . It does indeed sound like a driver issue .
