Strange to see so little love here for the MZ-NHF800.

I have the NH900, and the controls are goofy: doing record slider plus pause takes two hands, and the combo STOP/PAUSE button is a menace if you ever want to pause (and save settings) in the dark. Also, the screen is dark and the digital amp isn't the most lovely sound. Gumstick battery = uncertainty about whether it'll get through a long show, and outboard battery pod takes some of the "mini" out of minidisc. The problem with the latch for the gumstick battery--can open in a pocket, has to be taped shut--wasn't solved after the MZ-R900.

Whereas putting an alkaline or 2300 MaH rechargeable AA battery into the NHF-800 runs it forever and rocks the house, and the controls are easy.

You might see the NH900 in the Classifieds soon.

The NHF800 is a rebaged NH700 with a radio remote, nothing more really. BUT both it and the NH700 do have that lovely AA battery!!! :) My first unit was a R70 and I loved the AA internal battery.

My choice was the NH1 as well. I am a sucker for a solid, all-metal body. Been hooked on that since the R70. It just feels so much more solid versus a plastic or half plastic unit.

I don't look the Onkyo MD-105FX I've just bought three days ago from Audiocubes?

Poll amended with the Onkyo MD-105FX Hi-MD deck - cast your vote accordingly. If you have the time, please feel free to post your pictorial/review of the Hi-MD deck at our "Product Reviews/Pictorials" or "Gallery" section. :)

Treat your rechargeables right and they will be reliable.

http://www.batteryuniversity.com/

intersting to find this under the li-ion heading at that website:

http://www.batteryuniversity.com/partone-23.htm

"Charger should apply full charge. Avoid economy chargers that advertise one-hours charge. Fastest full-charge time: 2-3 hours."

I've never known my nh1 to take longer than 1.5 hours to charge fully, normally it's under an hour. thanks sony, lump us with the least preferred charging method. I guess that way we buy more batteries right?

I read somewhere in the manual that the battery is only 80% charged for the first hour and this is when the LED light is on. For a full charge would take 3 hours. For me, I just leave the unit in the cradle and go to sleep. When I wake up, its already fully charged. Anyway I have an extra battery for backup which is half full at all times.

If you don't take price/performance ratio (which would give the ultra-cheap NH600 sold here in Sweden a chance) into account it's for me clearly between the three top models NH1, EH1 and RH10. For my use the RH10 is partly wasted, I usually have my MD in a case/bag/pouch and control it from the remote. Then, the EH1 isn't enough smaller to win over the NH1 with its recording capabilities - so the NH1 is the winner for me.

I have to go with the NH900, even both I prefer the look of the NH1 and the RH10. Part of this is driven by my specific use -- I use a minidisc as a recorder and for listening to audiobooks. The NH900 has my vote (and my purchase money) for the following reasons:

v. NH1: the NH900 has a more common gumstick, a AA battery option and DC input (useful in a car);

v. RH10: although the RH10 adds mp3 use, making it easier to transfer audiobooks to disc, I have an MP3 player, and the pitch control of the NH900 is great for spoken word playback. If the RH10 had pitch control, it would have my vote.

I myself have two NH700 units and they are my go-to everywhere-you-go units for playback and whatever, I have a ton of gear that I use for it (both Sony OEM and Sony and third-party aftermarket), as opposed to the stock gear that came with it, but just to update this poll, you should also add the RH1 and the M200 (same unit) in there as well.

In terms of usage, the MZ-NHF800 wins by a long way - I need that radio, it has the convenience of running off an AA battery, and it sounds very good too. I'd go for the NH900 as a player/recorder only unit for the line out. The RH910 comes a close runner-up though.

In terms of desirability, the best Hi-MD unit would have to be the Onkyo MD-133, which gets my vote. Not sure if I'll ever get round to owning one though...

I agree fully on the MD-133 being the ultimate Hi-MD unit, but FYI, the radio remote that comes with the NHF800 also works with its sister unit, the MZ-NH700, in fact the 700 and 800 are the same, except the 800 has the VPF Acoustic Engine, other than that, that's the only difference between the two.

I wonder if the Buffalo MD-HUSB will work with the Mac software , It uses BeatJam instead of Sonic for windows , says it will connect to a Mac, but How ? I might order one if I can get that info , the AA battery and internal english menu is very appealing

Isn't that the one that was a rebadged NH-600? would be interesting to see if Beatjam recognizes other units

Have fun

Bob

physically a clone but the Buffalo was the first hi-md unit to be able to download and play files in MP3 format.

oops yeah forgot to mention that , just wish I knew exactly how it would interface with the Mac , especially because of the MP3's , I have 500 songs that are used for Guitar lessons all in MP3 format , all great Rock tunes , with Musically important Ideas in them , and I use them when teaching Guitar , I traded for a DH-10P just for that reason , but it would be nice to have a Backup in case the 10p gives up , plus the AA battery thing , turns me on to it , I can get a AA anywhere , and it has a DC input so no matter where I am good to go .

Basic Teaching setup :

Guitar (obvious) , A Portable Effect rig(Line6 Pocket Pod) that Takes a Stereo line input for the MP3,s and mixes with the Guitar , and a small Amp that has Two inputs one for me and one for the Student ( just in case they don't have an Amp ( Headphone Processor's are basically a requirement in a Japanese Apt. )

That way they can plug their rig into my amp and hear the whole deal .

I just dont want an iPod . or any other MP3 player for that matter , I have too many MD's to trade off .

But I guess the easy solution would be , Transfer the MP3's with the 10P or the RH1 , onto Disc , then use the disc in the Husb .

Well ,........ there went 200 dollars , or whatever it is going to cost me . I dont lose by it not working with the Mac if it doesn't , I get a HiMD player that uses AA's and works with the 40ELK remote ( website for Buffalo mentions it)

Thanks for sparking the thought process , I was being brain dead , now my wife can hate both of us cause I will blame it on you . ! :girl_devil:

Great work Rich, now I'm being fussy, but is there any way to split the fist poll into players and recorders? And add the EH50/70 in the player section... ;) oh, and differentiate the NH600D from the NH600.

I can't be bothered to re-do the whole thing right now to split between players / recorders - sorry! (probably the fact I have had a fever for the last 4 days has caused me to lose some perspective) But I'll stick the EH50/70 600D in. :)
