Confirmed Third Generation Hi-MD Release Date For USA

I heard the clip on the remote is reversible...

Err, that is not something new. The 3xEL/ELK remotes have always had reversible/removable clip. The 40ELK's clip is reversible, but not removable. However, the display itself is not reversible, so for some people, it is still "upside down."

Any news yet on whether the US release is going to be the crappy Silver model we always seem to get or the option to purchase one in black? I want the black model soo bad. I have too may silver models as it is.

Why doesn't Sony give the US market the same options as the rest of the world? I hate Sony for this!

BLACK RH1! BLACK RH1! BLACK RH1!...

Plenty of them here in The Netherlands.

I already own one since May 10th.

It's a neat little gadget lacking the superb OLED display of the beautiful MZ-RH10.

You can't have everything.

Greetz,

Oti

So far So good...RH1 is a black devil little thing!

As most of the settings are better done by the remote (its a bit uncomfortable directly from the device) , I'm thinking of buying the 3-line remote came with the MZ-NH1(in my opinion is the best remote ever made).I still cannot get familiar with the remote the RH1 has...either I'll use the older one from the MZ-N1 I have.

PS:the Bass settings are quite nice.Though there's a volume limitation for all european models.Hope soon there'will be some way to 'unlock' this and make it play louder. :P

cheers

Americans spell 'car' as 'car'. You are correct in saying that Americans spell 'disc' as 'disk'.

Americans spell "floppy disk" with a "K" because it is a shortened version of "diskette." There are, however, many other instances of "disk" in common American usage (spinal disk, solar disk, etc.).

"Disc" with a "C" actually is the exception. Traditionally, it applies mostly to flat, circular A-V media like like LPs, Videodiscs and Compact Discs.

"MiniDisc" follows this thinking. However, since it is a trademarked name, there's no excuse for a company's communications rep to misspell it.

Sony's U.S. marketing and communications "professionals" have been clueless about MD since its launch. I'm not surprised they can't even spell it korrectly.

It's as if a Chevrolet flack were to write about a Korvette, or someone from Kimberly-Clark were to promote "Cleanex." Sony should fire the whole lot for incompetence, if not attrocious grammar.

P.S. - Dear Sony: I have a degree in journalism and have written hundreds of articles for local, regional and national publications. I can spell "MiniDisc" and, unlike your PR drones, understand the difference between a USB data connection and a USB audio feed. My resumé is available on request.

hi

I'm hoping to get clarification on this issue. Ive checked and it doesnt seem like i've seen a final answer, so perhaps someone has it.

as a pc and a mac user, and someone who owns 2 md players/recorders and is only considering purchasing the rh1 for its suppossed mac capabilities (the other 2 md's i own are not mac compatible), will i be able to both upload and download tracks to/from my md player using a mac? (either with existing software or forthcoming software that someone may be aware of at this point).

Plenty of them here in The Netherlands.

If flights weren't so expensive right now, I'd book a flight to Amsterdam and pick one up.

But that ain't an option. It's now May 17th and no RH1's in sight...and the Soundpro's website says early June.

mph.

I was ARRESTED for going 115 in a 65 (allegedly). I drive a friggin Toyota Echo 2000. I was going 80-85, I swear. I have no clue how people manage to get away with tickets when my rear end ended up in a jail for 27 hours.

$6,000 later, I'm cleared.

Sigh.

Anyways, I'm thinking of getting me one of these new bad-boys. My NH900 fell on concrete and broke. I couldn't put it back together. And I was in a fit of rage at the time over SonicStage and its infinite ineptitude. So I threw it out. Got myself a 30GB Video iPod (yea yea, heresy). But it ain't got nothin' on recording.

MD for life. Well maybe.

BLACK RH1! BLACK RH1! BLACK RH1!...

Wait a minute, what about another color(colour)RH1 like Red? Or gold or something else let's think out side of the box. Maybe there is only Black and Silver, but on the other hand it would be nice if they distinguised between the MZRH1 and MZ-M200(or the rumoured Pro unit) with another color like 'Red' or something.

Sony did mention red colour of RH1 but it is not available for Public .that means no production of Red RH1

That's reasonable, but on the other hand if Sony is really going to come out with a PRO-RH1 like the rumoured MZ-M200 and if they are going to charge a little more for it, then I say they need a new color! If Red is out of the question, how about a Gold one?

They need to do something to make it look at least little different than the RH1! Otherwise who in their right mind would buy the MZ-M200 if it is the same as the RH1 in everyway, but comes with a mic? So, I hope they give it at least a cosmetic change like Gold?

My two choices would be Gold or Red and I hope they pick one of those for the high end version.

  • 2 weeks later...

Forget color. I'm going to pick one up physically at the my neighborhood electronics store once it releases here in the US. I wouldn't take a chance ordering one. Sony made a bad decision with the name (MZ-RH1). It is too close to the MZ-RH10 and would leave considerable amount of error/mixup or scamming by potential "mail order crooks" here in the US. I guarantee you the "Bait & Switch" artists will be out in full force here in the US once the MZ-RH1 comes out. If you can, purchase from a local electronics store (in person).

Good luck in finding an electronic store that carry MD stuff, especially for a high end like the RH1. I've never seen the RH10, NH1, NH900, etc in regular brick & mortar stores. Before most of them abandon MD, they only carried the low end NE410 clones and NH600D for HiMD.

The wait is killing me! I hate it when there's a new gadget that I have to have and it's not released yet (stateside, anyhow).

If I knew sound professionals would be getting black RH1's for sure I'd go ahead and pre-order.

Here's an email exchange between Minidisco and myself. Still sounds kinda iffy:

Do you have an ETA for the RH1?

Which color?

Thanks...

----------------------------------------------------------------

We're hoping to have it in 1-3 weeks. As far as we know, it only comes in black.

Any indication of a price on the RH1 from Minidisco?

I didn't ask cuz Minidisco's prices seem to generally stay near list price. We probly won't see good prices 'til east coast electronics dealers get 'em. But they aren't even showing RH1's on their websites yet like they did before the release of first gen Hi-MD. Maybe we should be making some phone calls reqesting them...

I heard an estimated price of $350 from minidisco.com... we'll see how close the price is when it is actually released.

Yeah, see, that's the suggested retail price, right? That's too much. It'd be almost $400 to your doorstep. I'm hoping we can get one for about $275, delivered for $300.

$299 at SoundProfessionals. Comes with choice of either binaural omnidirectional or cardiod mics. $307.30 total including shipping.

i just ordered the mz-m100 bundle from soundprofessionals. wanted to mention, first, that i've experienced good service from them. (although you'll save some trouble if your billing and shipping address are the same . . and make sure the phone number you use with your credit card is what you give soundprofessionals.) also, i didn't realize until after i ordered, but they have a point system, which basically comes up to something like $10 off your next order for a $300 order.

This is starting to become painful. It's like a big tease.

I agree Reef! All this is not helping Sony out one bit trying to sell these here in the states. Between color, prices, the future availability of MD discs and other things, I'm starting to get worried. When a company releases a product overseas, then waits MONTHS before releasing it here in the US, that means there are usually modifications (AND NOT FOR THE BETTER OF THE PRODUCT). I would like to see a comparison between the overseas version and the US version (if there are any) when it releases here in the US. I'm pretty sure there will be. But I'm keeping my fingers crossed in hopes they didn't modify the unit (if they did, for the better). Based on reviews I've read so far, I don't think I will be pre-ordering it until I read reviews from the US version. Alot of the reviews are somewhat discouraging. I am a Mac user (and Videographer) and I thought this would be perfect for me instead of purchasing a true portable recorder (which costs $500-$1200). But lately, from what I've been reading (especially the availablity of tapes in the future), I'm now starting to think twice about this. I don't want to end up purchasing this unit, realize it cannot do what I want it to do, or then stuck buying discs in bulks of 50 from overseas markets (which still have a strong MD fanbase) and waiting weeks for them to come in.

If you can hold out, I'd hold out. I don't think you'll be disappointed. But I am a bit concerned, too.

On top of there being none in the US, it sounds like they're are somewhat scarce in Europe as well.

Please excuse this Ipod refernece, but when Apple announced the Nano, the thing hit the stores like the next day! Maybe that's not a fair comparison being that Apple is based in the US and Sony in Japan, but, man...

I don't know how many times I can reread the MDcenter.nl reveiw (albeit great) and look at pictures to maintain enthusiasm.
