With SS 3.4, it has a "high" recording setting. Simple Burner does not, so it leads me to believe that SS 3.4 actually gives better sound quality. Correct me if I'm wrong.

As far as I know, there are three ways to transfer CD music to Hi-MD: 1.) MD Simple Burner 2.) Import CD using ATRAC3plus and then transfering to Hi-MD with SS 3.4 3.) Import CD as WAV file, converting to ATRAC3plus and then transfering to Hi-MD with SS 3.4 Assuming I'm using 256kbps for all 3 methods, which one will yield better sound quality? I'm guessing the 2nd method would be better, because it has the "high" setting to choose from. The other methods don't. Any suggestions or comments would be helpfull.

April Fool's!! Sorry, I just had to

I agree, any quality loss is masked by the "highs" being enhanced.
-
No distortion and it sounds much better than direct MP3 playback. But each to his own.

I use to convert my MP3s to ATRAC3plus 256, but I decided to give 352kbps a try and I was very impressed with the sound quality when played back on my RH10. I didn't notice any loss in quality and it almost sounded as good as a CD ripped to ATRAC3plus 256. I know I've suggested to others to convert MP3s to ATRAC3plus 256 because direct MP3 playback on Hi-MD just plain sucks, but try ATRAC3plus 352 and see if it works for you. I think I'll stick with that from now on.

Question about Quality: Real time recording vs. SonicStage
Sony_Fan replied to danielbb90's topic in Minidisc
I don't know if Simple Burner is as good as SonicStage. SS 3.4 has the "high" recording setting that Simple Burner does not. So, it's possiblet that better sound quality may be achieved in SS 3.4. Unfortunately, you have to import the file and then transfer. It takes twice as long than Simple Burner. -
In the My Library view in SonicStage, right click anywhere on the gray colum bars and select "Composer." This will display the composer of the tracks. I've attached a picture to clarify more. Then you can sort by Composer by clicking on the Composer bar until it's in an order to your liking. But in order for this to work, you must have "all tracks" view enabled. [attachmentid=1559] I don't understand why the picture came out so small. It may be difficult to tell, but I hope you get the idea.

Actually, the only thing I have running in the background is my anti-virus software that does a real-time scan whenever the hardrive is active. Should I disable that while using SS? Yes, I did notice popping sounds on the tracks that would skip. I've converted MP3s to ATRAC3+ and then transferred to Hi-MD and have had no skipping. So I'm starting to think that it's the compression software that's the problem. I normally use SB to transfer to Hi-MD, but it doesn't have a "high" recording setting like SS 3.4. That's why i wanted to use SS.

I normaly use Simple Burner, but I wanted to try transferring music with SS 3.4 I import music from CD with ATRAC3+ 256 into my library and then I transfer them to my RH10. I listened to the tracks and I noticed on a couple of tracks the songs skipped. I'm using a new Mindisc so that should not be the problem. So either the skipping occurs during the compression or the transfer phase. This never happened with Simple Burner. Anyone else experience this?

I've been trying to create an audio CD from MP3s with SS 3.4. It does not work, it just stalls and tells me it can't burn the songs. I have other CD burning software and it works with no problems. I would like to use SS 3.4 because it's easier to arrange tracks in certain order. Are there any special settings that have to be set in SS 3.4? Thanks.

MP3 playback on Hi-MD units lacks "highs" or treble response. Converting them to ATRAC3plus @ 256 restores the treble response. To me, it sounds very good.

Transcoding an MP3 to ATRAC3plus @ 256kbps sound pretty good to me. I transcode all my MP3s to ATRAC3plus 256 because it preserves more of the sound quality and the higs are restored. I only do this when transferring to my RH10. Try it!

Let me know if this sounds good. I downloaded a program called Goldwave. It can increase the volume of .wav files. So I created some .wav files from a CD from the 80s and increased the volume of the files and then burned it to a CD-R. No doubt, the CD-R sounds much louder than the original and there is no distortion. I'm guessing this is the right way to do it since there is no compression involved. What do you think?

I'm not interested in LP2! I want ATRAC3plus 128 transferable and LP2 is not good enough. I believe that ATRAC3 is not as good as ATRAC3plus because it does not have the "high" recording option.
-
I understand that MP3-->ATRAC3 conversion will result in loss of quality. That's not what I'm talking about. What I would like is to be able to transfer ATRAC3plus 128 to my RH10 without any conversion. This is not possible, not yet. The only reason why I mentioned MP3, is because all MP3 players allow for playback of 128kbps. It only make sense that Sony would allow the same bitrate playback for ATRAC3plus.
-
Since most MP3s out there are at 128kbps, it seems almost necessary for Sony to allow this bitrate to be transferable. Hi-LP sound quality is not convincing, but 192kbps and Hi-SP take up too much space. So a good medium would be ATRAC3plus @ 128kbps. Hopefully SS 3.5 or 4.0 will allow it to be transfered. Have any info on this?

These are MP3s converted to Hi-SP with a volume of 98db. Even Hi-SP recordings straight from CDs don't sound loud when hooked up to a stereo.
-
I can't tell you exact numbers, but when i hook up my RH10 to a stereo system I have to raise the volume all the way up. The lack of volume power and bass response are 2 things I dislike about my unit.
-
Recording is done through magnetic head and playback is done with the laser. But your right, the head will not wear out since the actual recording surface on the disc is protected by a clear coat substance.
-
When I bought my Sharp MD player, i was really impressed with the sound quality of SP. When I bought my RH10, I was more impressed with Hi-SP due to it's sound quality and more space available on old minidiscs. Personally, I record all my CDs in Hi-SP, any higher bit rate takes up too much space. It's the closest thing to CD sound I need.
-
The RH10 is very quite, although when the head moves back and forth over the disc it is a bit louder but nothing that will affect recordings. It also has the automatic line/mic in recording volume.

Discovered a way to remaster my CDs
Sony_Fan replied to Sony_Fan's topic in Technical, Tips, and Tricks
I've used MP3Gain to normalize my MP3s and then I convert them to ATRAC3+ and then transfer them to my RH10. I have not heard any snaps or cracks. What's digital clipping by the way?
