Strange Days (1995) I just discovered this movie and buddies I can say that minidisc [video clips] is everywhere in the movie. Matrix can go to the locker room...

Apart some live recording like you, my best experience is very recent. It was my first listening of the MDS-B5 deck connected to my Cyrus amplifier. I was used to the sound of portable MDs like the MZ-RH1 / MZ-NH900 / MZ-N510 but they do not have this huge sound when they are connected to a HiFi system. So, when I discovered the Pierre's MD decks(see my posts), I was very excited to introduce those decks to SonyInsiders MD fans. That was because he promised me to get the Sony JA555ES for free if I help him to sell his decks on the web. So I am very patient till I can listen to this astounding deck y next trip in France. My other good experience is not a real MD experience but I discovered that the quality of my recordings on MDs from my PC with Winamp or WMP would be much better if I used the DFX Audio Enhancer.

PM to you. Where do you live ?
-
Aaarrgghh...PhilippeC not PhilipB Thank anyway bobt !
-
Bobt please send me on my PM plenty of photos of your JB980 broken parts so that I can think of it and perhaps get an advise locally.
-
Bobt I think you receive the Sony JB980 serie QS, not JE980. http://www.minidisc.org/part_Sony_MDS-JB980.html I read on your picture a reference on power supply card : JE780, something is hidding other letters on the picture but for sure there is not a JE780ES in the ES serie. http://www.minidisc.org/part_Sony_MDS-JE780.html

Just search "pitch control" on http://www.minidisc.org/deck_table.html

As the ultimate MD player/recorder, RH1 read MP3. If you cannot find hi-MD, just use MD blanks Hi-MD formatted. They are cheaper...
-
Sure that I would have tested its recording quality. As I will do when I will get another deck. Portable or deck, neither mind, the final sound quality is the most important thing.
-
No, it is just because 1) my MDS-B5 cannot record digitaly (I pay it very cheap compare to the original price)... 2) anyway it do not have type R
-
I don't have a digital amplifier (except for my home theater) but an analog one (Cyrus IIIi). It was a quiet good one during his time (end 80's) in his price range. I stop to record my LPs as I can find 320kbps MP3 or lossless files on the web. No way to record FM for me, here in Vietnam we dont' have this opportunity and your choice : even ADSL is not fast enough to listen to radio with a good quality. So my energy is focus on CD and lossless / MP3 recording (with DFX Audio Enhancer in real time, SP mode). Till I have my MDS-B5 deck, I don't listen my MDs with RH900 and RH1 considering they are breakable as I said in another post. I use both Sony RH900, RH1 and N510 alternativly for recording as there all are Atrac 4.5 with type R.

This is almost exactly what answer Pierre - I remind you that he own more than 100 decks (mdmad, have a look in classifieds section). using optical out : middle and high-end decks are similar using analog out : high-end only for the best sound Réponse de Pierre En français << Voilà une excellente question et je vais essayer d'y répondre le plus objectivement possible. >>

Don't forget to save money for MD blanks also because they are discontinued right now. Specially Hi-Mds.

Here in Vietnam where "MD is not popular" I have notice a fantastic drop out of MD blanks the last 6 months. I know the only one wholesale shop in center Saigon for mulmedia supports, they don't have even one pack in stock anymore. Close shop can have perhaps totally the last blanks (last year each one sold one or two packs) and that will be not a surprise if price increase. I will tell you. Price was 1,2$ per blank in the wholesale shop last year. What does that mean for MD walkman and MD deck price ? Ouf ! Still I found 18 packs in the same wholesale shop. No more 5 colors pack Sony Color Collection, only all yellow color discs. Not bought them but will think of it.

The MZ-RH1 is so expensive that during the time you spare some money, just rethink of this investment. You will find for some more years a lot of cheap MD walkman (NetMD type S). The difference could be invest in something else like a second hand high-end MD deck. Myself I have a MZ-RH1 (bought second hand with jog level problem) and a MZ-NH900 (get screen and buttons problems) , I use them less and less considering that they are too easy breakable. They stay now on my desk for recording - in real time ! - and I use my MDS-B5 deck for listening. As I come back to SP mode for is universal aspect and his very good sound quality, I use a Net-MD walkman when I am outside. For me, I don't care of having more than 20 tracks of a MD. Quality of listening is more important. My second criteria is that as I live in Vietnam, I must also think of that the Hi-MD format is not anymore available now here (discs and walkman). It is still easy to find a old SP deck or above all MD boomboxes. And, if I need, some dozen of MD blanks. I will buy in the future if I need a Net-MD walkman, not a Hi-MD walkman (except the MZ-EH1) and an another deck.

For the Onkyo Hi-Md, such service manual with diagrams will be in japanese. Aaaarrrggghh. And I don't think that the same guy who do it one time for a Hi-MD deck user manual will translate the service manual in english ! Poor you. But poor me, perhaps diagrams are in an universal langage ?
